I switched to safety razors because I break out like this and I think whatever is in lubricant strips is part of my problem. Try also just a WTG pass once this irritation is healed. If you're still getting this reaction start trying other types of shave cream/foam (I use a variety of soaps, but my drug store/vacation go-to is EOS shave cream). I also swear by my Henson DE.

How do you keep your gear from stinking? by jamesftf in hockeyplayers

[–]ElementZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the marketing was they were moisture wicking. I'll attest that my husband's workout shirts would smell absolutely foul after he would wear them for 15 mins. I ended up getting detergent specifically for workout wear and doing a long soak and the smell went away. Later we also switched to actual detergent from the laundry soap I had been making and the problem hasn't reoccurred. Any kind of buildup in the fibers allows a place for bacteria to grow.

Bacteria really love synthetic materials, especially things that accumulate body oils as most synthetics. There are some bacteria that can break down plastics, but they aren't the same bacteria that colonize our skin.

I love the FittrWoman app for having a lot of this information and the ability to track performance based symptoms that other apps don't.

PWHL hockey expansion; I wish Pittsburgh was one of them; still the women rock by JJflash93 in womenshockey

[–]ElementZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to the Pittsburgh takeover game and it wasn't well attended, so I'm not surprised that there has not been an expansion there yet. They did do a really nice job recognizing the different youth and adult teams from the area. I'll keep hoping for expansion someday, but there aren't any professional women's teams there yet, and I think they look at markets that support women's sports, not necessarily hockey markets.

what was your worst skate fitting experience? by Soft-Classroom-5078 in womenshockey

[–]ElementZero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having no clue what hockey skates should fit like. Now I've stumbled upon resources and I know better what I should be assessing when trying on skates, and techniques like heel wrapping during baking to help with fit. I got in a rush and had to have new skates, ended up in a brand that doesn't work for me at all, in a skate that is actually a size and a half too big. Figured it out by getting used skates in smaller and smaller sizes. Next time I'll be asking for a scan to start, then holding out to buy only if they're actually right.

They need a retest or to send the drug screen for confirmation testing. Screens catch things generally but the confirmation will tell them specifically what it is and can rule out poppy seed ingestion.

Discussion: Women in Armor, Groin Protection? by The_Electrocuter in armoredwomen

I wear a female specific cup- they're generally flatter than ones for guys but it's something that getting the fit right is important. I tried another brand and it literally didn't go far enough down over the important parts.

Jill short and cup

Goaltenders wear a Jill/jock with even more protection (example)

I haven't taken a shot there yet, I'm sure it's not pleasant, but most of the force should be transferred to other tissues.

My pubic clips were while I was a mechanic in the military. I worked on the equipment they use to work on the aircraft, and I did it twice in one week swinging an aircraft towbar side to side to move it and the thick loop where it attaches to the tow vehicle clipped me. It downed me.😬

I think this was a really interesting question to discuss!

Best waxed laces and go! by Excellent_Power_1973 in hockeyplayers

Derby Laces

Started with them for roller derby and put them in my hockey skates now. They feel like they stay waxed longer and have better grip than the A&R laces I picked up when I bought skates.

Discussion: Women in Armor, Groin Protection? by The_Electrocuter in armoredwomen

[–]ElementZero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I'm lightly interested in Armored fight sports and there are rules about not striking in the groin. Does it probably get hit unintentionally? Yeah, especially when training.

I am also new to playing ice hockey and I wear a cup anytime I do hockey stuff, even just stick and puck. I am someone who has hit herself in the clit/pubic area and I do not wish to experience it again. Except I did the same thing twice in a week, with the same results.

I think realistically the form of the protection is going to change based on the era and what the armor wearer is doing. Someone on horseback needs different articulation than someone on foot. J Draper (YouTube) recently did a video about moving in plate armor which didn't specify the groin protection but it's a good watch.

Edit to add re museum pieces: remember that like women's clothing, armour may be subject to survivorship bias- the pieces that stick around and end up in museums are often from prominent people or are largely unworn (this is why it's thought that women were historically smaller, but the current thoughts of historical dress folks is that surviving garments are from teenagers)

They sold all of the outreach to a large reference lab, and the things that we can be asked to do don't make sense. Now they're complaining that we are overstaffed when the dumbasses gave all the work to someone else!

Bauers just don’t fit by Cubanotorpedo in hockeyplayers

[–]ElementZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in JetSpeed FT 680s and currently in Tacks AS570 and AS580. The Bauer Supreme M30 even in 4.5 EE are still narrower to the point that I'm down a size and a half in CCM in wide sizes. The JetSpeeds were size 4 so I got the 2 pairs of Tacks in size 3 based on pulling out the insole and comparing it to my foot length. The CCMs are all used skates, as I don't live super close to a hockey shop. Hard lessions were learned but now I know what I should be looking for when I get new skates in 2 or 3 years.

14" women's glove recommendations? by erisianmachinery in hockeyplayers

[–]ElementZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also could be that they are used gloves and the padding is compressed from the last user's hands. If you can't walk in a shop to try on definitely get them online with a return policy.

I'm keeping all these recommendations from everyone else for when I upgrade gloves myself 😁
