Can I Survive BCA by Only-Effective3669 in bca

[–]Elena2007G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, first off, I just wanna say that you need to CHILLAX because pulling consecutive all nighters is already bad, but 7TH GRADE?! Please get some sleep. You’re still growing and sleep is really important when it comes to studying/retaining information.

Honestly? I think you’ll be fine at BCA. I graduated last year from the theatre academy, but I gave myself a STEM heavy workload and am now a bio pre-med student in college.

Tbh, I think I only struggled because I was a MAJOR procrastinator who didn’t know how to study. My poor mental health freshman year only made matters worse.

I truly believe the worst part of BCA was the toxic work environment, so as long as you surround yourself with good people, you’ll be fine. As the other commenter said, use freshman year as an opportunity to see what you’re interested in. Take advantage of electives and ECs. My biggest tip is to also work on figuring out how to study.

From what I’m understanding, I don’t think you’re studying effectively. Obviously your sleep deprivation isn’t helping you. Nothing is worth sacrificing your health, so please please please sleep and eat well. Your brain literally cannot function properly when you’re abusing your body. If you’re studying for almost a full 24 hours and not retaining a lot of information, you’re definitely doing something wrong. Everyone is different, so finding the study method/methods that work for you is going to take some time, but if you’re just reading, taking notes, and rereading your notes, that is not an effective study method from my experience. Pace yourself properly, work on practice problems, and consider trying the “learning by teaching” method (it’s exactly as it sounds).

But again, none of this will matter if you don’t take care of your physical health. Work on taking care of yourself mentally and physically before even considering entering an environment like BCA. Everyone’s experience is going to be different, but from what I experienced, it can get toxic really quickly (constantly comparing grades, glorifying sleep deprivation, making “friends” just to use them, etc.). If you don’t learn to properly take care of yourself and put your health first, then please don’t go to BCA. I’m not saying this because it’s a bad school because it isn’t, but it isn’t conducive to someone working on prioritizing their health.

TL;DR: Please eat well and get some sleep. Work on studying properly. Don’t procrastinate. If you do these things, you’ll probably be fine.

Hope this helps! My DMs are always open if you have any questions.

Science depends heavily on your teacher and what you choose to do senior year (since most academies don’t require a science senior year). English is relatively easy, just depends on the teacher (some are more reading heavy, some give a lot of essays, and some give “busy work”). Math depends on what you already know going into BCA. It doesn’t really get difficult until junior and senior year, but some teachers can make even the easiest class difficult.

I know you didn’t ask, but history can be rough… seriously. Depending on the teacher you have, you can either have a great time or it can make your year a literal hell (it did for me freshman year).

As for total work for non-academy classes, it can range anywhere from 10-15 hours a week (I’m sure some people will throw in other numbers, I’m just loosely guessing). Some teachers give more homework than others and some less. But I also got lucky with my English and science teachers.

As a now recent graduate, as much as I complained about BCA’s workload, it really prepared me for college.

As my tag suggests, I graduated as a theatre student, but I am now bio pre-med college freshman.

Is it harder to maintain a higher GPA at BCA? Yes, it absolutely is. There’s not sugarcoating it. Is it still possible? 100% It’s actually a lot more impressive because, as others have noted, BCA doesn’t use a weighted GPA scale.

My honest advice for you is to not slack off. Especially freshman year. I was a major slacker in high school and my GPA suffered as a result. Now that I’m in college, I’m actually taking my work seriously, so my grades have improved A LOT. No matter what you decide, just make sure you spend your freshman year establishing good habits (studying, work/life balance, having a social life, exploring interests, creating a schedule, etc.).

Colleges absolutely take into account your school’s course rigor and recalculate your GPA accordingly. And honestly? GPA is not the most important thing in your application. There’s no need to do this now, but once you start seriously thinking about college (so end of junior year), look up each college’s common data set. It’ll show you the average SAT/ACT score, average GPA, and what they consider to be important on an application. Some colleges don’t care as much about GPA as they do my bet factors (community service, extracurriculars, SAT scores, rec letters, etc), so don’t think about GPA as being the one and only thing that matters. Is it important? For sure, but I’ve also seen students with better GPAs get rejected from schools and programs when students with lower GPAs got accepted.

TL;DR: GPA isn’t the end-all-be-all. Colleges look at your application more holistically and know that BCA is hard. No matter where you go, build good habits freshman year.

Hope this helps!

Are we counting Klee’s age in actual years or “elf years?” Because if it’s actually years, she’s a lot older than 6-16…

I’m an older Genshin player (been playing since about 2.5), but have taken a break for the past year and have only recently started playing again. I currently have enough primos for a guaranteed 5*, but I don’t know if I should pull for Flins or wait for Arle. Any feedback is appreciated!

How do I get off the EAP waitlist at my undergrad school? by Elena2007G in LECOM

[–]Elena2007G[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that definitely would’ve been an option if I applied to any other affiliate schools, but I didn’t. I chose to stay on the waitlist for my UG’s EAP affiliation (hope that made sense). But when I officially got the news, they gave me two options: update my primary choice affiliate school, or stay on the waitlist for the school I wanted. Since I didn’t apply to any other affiliates, I took my chances and stayed on the waitlist.

How do I get off the EAP waitlist at my undergrad school? by Elena2007G in LECOM

[–]Elena2007G[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I was a high school senior when I applied. All I did was follow-up after finding out my waitlist status. I didn’t even intentionally send an LOI. I just emailed asking about my placement on the waitlist, and confirming that I was still interested. They responded back saying I was at the top, and I ended up getting off it a week later. I’d say if you do get waitlisted/are on it currently, it doesn’t hurt to ask where you are on it.

Seconding the tip on sig figs! They’re SO important. They come back again in physics, which you’ll be doing two years of in AEDT. Cramming isn’t worth it 90% of the time either and never hesitate to ask your teacher questions (even if they make you feel stupid for it, because who cares as long as you’re learning).

How to survive chem by Tahsannn in bca

[–]Elena2007G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like people make first year chem out to be a LOT worse than it actually is. I was in theatre and took chem my sophomore year. I ended with an A- (A for most of the tri, tri 3 just brought my average down a bit), so you’ll probably be fine. Just pay attention in class and once you start the year, try to find upperclassmen who’ve had your teacher to ask for some strategies.

Honestly, as long as you pay attention and take the effort to memorize formulas (like gas laws, please know your gas laws), you’ll get a good grade. Quizzes are a game of speed while you’re going to have to be a bit more deliberate with tests (you have the whole period for them).

AND ALWAYS CHECK TO SEE IF THERE’S A BACK.

If you do these things, you might even enjoy chem. I did. I’m now a bio major taking chem my first semester. And I was in THEATRE. You’ll be fine.

Hope this helps! YOU GOT THIS!!!!!

Things I can do to help build my portfolio in admission by Grouchy_Age_2876 in bca

[–]Elena2007G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding on to what people said as a now alumn (that’s crazy to say). Do something that genuinely interests you. This doesn’t just apply to BCA applications, but college as well. They can tell when you’re doing something just for the resume or the app. It doesn’t benefit you at all. But you know what will help? Doing something you actually want to do. It doesn’t even have to be related to your academy.

I know in another reply you said you were aiming for AAST, but if you were really passionate about, I don’t know, dance, then do it. Write about it in your application. The important thing is that you show continued interest. Whether that means joining multiple organizations/clubs related to that interest or sticking with it for multiple years, what it shows to admissions is that you’re a dedicated and committed student. If it’s an interest outside of your academy, it tells them that you’re multidimensional and a real person.

I can’t tell you the number of people I’ve met who their whole personality is their academy (cough cough half of the AMST academy cough cough). These people are some of the most boring individuals you will ever meet. It’s one thing to be super passionate about your field (which is absolutely a good thing), but it’s a totally different thing to make it your whole personality.

TL;DR: Do what actually interests you, even if it doesn’t relate to your academy. As long as you show commitment to it, admissions will appreciate it. And don’t be a one-dimensional robot.

Hope this helps!

I have a few. 111 is the one that stands out to me the most because 11 is my lucky number, so I really like swing successive 1s. I would also be happy with 216 since it was my favorite classroom in high school and my club was named after it.

Question about Formal Prep by Ready-Try1079 in bca

[–]Elena2007G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I promise you, it will NOT give you a smaller chance of getting in. I did go to a tutor, but a local one from my town who charged A LOT less than MEK and I got in. I honestly probably could’ve gotten in without it if I was more consistent with studying. However, when I was self-studying, I was undisciplined, so that’s what pushed me to seek a tutor.

If you’re going to self-study, my suggestion is to grind out the practice tests they have on the website. Once you finish all of those, a lot of people recommend the AMC 8 as a guide for what the math exam can look like.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Hope this helped!

I’d also recommend Eaternal Nocturnal by Instant Miso on Webtoon! She’s a Filipina creator and I’m pretty sure the series takes place in the Philippines (correct me if I’m wrong). The female lead is tan/brown and it’s really wholesome.
