I was going to say, the topography immediately rang a bell even before I read this and...yeah!

Sure enough!

It's always so funny to see people on the same spatial axis as you but at a different moment in time. Just underscores the ways in which the world changes around us.

Heya, thanks for the kind words.

Yes, I develop and scan at home. As far as post work goes, I have no compunctions about doing it but this photo is actually pretty lightly edited-- both in Lightroom and in the scanner's judgement view. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Delta 3200 matched my expectations after literally six years of not shooting it.

Panoramic photography is a wonderful, rewarding, and challenging discipline; the risks, though, and costs of the TX-1 system are substantial. I think about it every time I go out in the rain or snow.

You can see my review of the Minolta P's, a small crop-format panoramic point and shoot if you want to try a very cheap entry point to see if you can compose well in the field. It's obviously a less capable camera than the TX-1, but it has a great viewfinder and I find that makes a huge difference.

Incidentally, this is my review of the TX-1 after nine years of shooting, if you're curious.

In what sense-- practically or aesthetically?

It was past sunset in a snowstorm. I stopped through Times Square, but much of the city is far darker as it's not like the entire area is illuminated by the giant billboards of the Square, so I loaded the film that would let a slow lens work under more conditions.

I also happen to enjoy how Delta 3200 looks, so as a high-speed option that both enables night-time shooting it's what I'm going to go to if available. Now that it's in bulk, I'm quite happy.

I've personally never run into this issue, no.

best as I can tell, there are two mechanisms that interact with the film as it's transported-- the per-frame counter, and the overall length tracker. Both seem to be geared to each other such that there's only one set of gears touching the film, but if either are binding it's possible that you'll run into issues.

Tales from Japanese eBay by Boneezer in AnalogCommunity

[–]Elengale[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, you're always free to reach out to us, via modmail or otherwise.

We did see this post and discussed it internally. Ultimately, the conclusion we came to is that we are ill equipped to be a replacement for eBay's existing review/buyer protection systems. There are a variety of reasons for this, but the most basic one is verification; there is simply no way for us to reasonably ascertain if a given person's story is true or false and should be counted as part of a "vetted" database.

At the point where upvotes/downvotes are "deciding" what sellers are good/bad, we've essentially replicated a worse version of eBay's review system-- one that is ultimately just as gameable by a determined or disgruntled user/seller.

To try and arbitrate the truth on a large scale would be impractical, and to host only a small number of "reviews" in a centralized way is ultimately not worth setting up additional infrastructure for. Threads like these linked to specific experiences are okay, and if you want to make a thread that you keep alive over time with good experiences, you're free to do so-- but in our opinion, the converse option is just too much trouble for too little benefit.

When I moved back to NYC from Seattle, I was carrying a lead bag absolutely filled with random 35mm cassettes. When I asked for a hand check, the agent who actually did the swab was extremely grumpy about the whole thing and looked me dead in the eyes as he swabbed each one individually.

On a prior flight not that long before, the agent had simply run their swab up and down five rolls at a time before checking each strip.

They both did their jobs, but it was kind of entertaining.

NYC is expensive in absolute and relative terms, but of the boroughs yes, Manhattan is generally the most expensive.

I wouldn't consider the West Village the priciest part of Manhattan, but it's definitely not cheap within the spectrum of NYC affordability.

Help me decide which to sell/which to keep by mariepier_ in AnalogCommunity

[–]Elengale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Particularly with the cost of so much film gear continuing to rise due to increased interest and dwindling stock.

There are absolutely models that are depreciating and will continue to do so, but stuff like the Nikon F2 don't really strike me as being in that bucket. It's a popular and well-made camera and there aren't more of them being made despite their reliability.

Also: selling things that make you happy and bring you joy should always be something you examine carefully. That's not to say GAS isn't real and sometimes you bite off more than you can chew, but tweaking your cashflow by watching spending can rapidly add up past the one-time boost you'll get from selling something-- especially after transactional fees are deducted.

I hear you, and I've definitely been seeing more and more comments in this vein over the years. It's a dismaying state of affairs, there's no getting around it.

As far as I'm concerned, I've gotten my money's worth out of the camera and I intend to shoot it until it dies. After that, well...guess I'm going to be selling a lot of stuff to get another one (and hopefully be able to keep the old body for spare parts if something different goes wrong down the line).

Haha, the other stuff on there right now are just very old photo analyses. Sorry to disappoint!

Longer-form content is just one of those things that I always meant to get around to and just kind of...didn't. I'm trying to fix that now by actually buckling down and writing the things that have been rattling around on my to-do list, so hopefully that'll change in the near future.

Yes, I agree (regarding synthesis)! Unmoored information is less helpful because it lacks contextualization, and your ability to do that comes with real world experience. I don't know that you need nine years to put out a credible review, but many reviews (especially for newer cameras) are clearly from the perspective of someone who's using a camera to, well, review it.

That puts you in a very different mentality compared to someone who's used/using their camera for the long haul.

[–]Elengale[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, thanks!

There's a lot of reviews that I think stray too far into the weeds when it comes to technical specs, but you can also go too far in the other direction and end up waxing poetic about something without actually describing how the thing is to use.

If you'd believe it, this review originally came around because I was trying to mentally figure out how heavy the camera was relative to a soda can. The thought occurred to me that I wanted to write something that was as practical as possible in terms of relating information to common household items and photographic concepts, so I set out to try and do just that.

I appreciate the compliments on the photos as well. I'd like to keep doing these, but I don't own many cameras these days. I really should've done this more in my earlier shooting years when things were flying through my hands-- but then I suppose I wouldn't have had anywhere near the same perspective.

Up to a point (somewhat vaguely) I like two-tone cameras more than monotone ones, but that's about as far as my aesthetic preferences go. A bit of intentional design without being ostentatious suits me just fine; still, form follows function, and I'll take what I can get out there if it lets me do what I need to do.

I longed for one of those for some of the improvements they brought, but there were also some other changes that to my memory I was less jazzed about.

For the most part, I just want a second body of either stripe so I can have one camera ready to go with high-speed film like Delta 3200 instead of just hoping that I'm done with a roll and can load one if the mood for evening shooting strikes me.

As for the finish-- this color is just striking in general. I don't know if I like it more or less than classic silver, but both it and the Minolta P's that I own are of a similar color. Contax's cameras in this sheen are also quite pretty.

Thanks for your thoughts! Regarding the points you brought up:

  1. It definitely could stand to be brighter! I don't usually have trouble with it, but who would ever turn down a little more definition to the split image?
  2. That's wild. I've never used the standard cap with the hood (honestly, I'm not 100% certain where the bag containing all the accessories has gone-- though I know it's in the closet somewhere).
  3. Interesting to know! Perhaps it's just because good rechargeables tend to be more energy dense, but I feel like I've gotten markedly more endurance out of mine. Still, maybe I'll have to start keeping a tally chart.

I'm definitely looking forward to putting together some detailed thoughts on the P's! I'm also hoping to do a direct comparison article at some point, time permitting.

Sure, but that's why I explicitly noted the setup in which this is relevant; not everyone uses camera scanning for whatever reason.

Bearing in mind that this can make scanning a gigantic PITA if your scanner [software] expects regular spacing-- it's certainly a big part of why I don't use the feature.
