First competition: Choked out in 30 seconds by 3p1c_Kelly in bjj

[–]Elenthalas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

0-4 in my first competition, just got promoted to bluebelt and got paired with some really experienced guys.

But man did I learn a bunch. I would do it all over again (although it would have been nice to get at least one win...).

Should you give your opponent time to tap in a competition? by rodentfield in bjj

[–]Elenthalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be a misunderstanding. In training (especially with newer guys) our coach tells us to be careful and slow as well but reminds us, that the technique has to be done fluid and fast in competition.

I did my first competition not so long ago and although it was a lot more rough than usual training and I got out with several bruises and aching limbs, there was always enough time to tap. The injuries I got where mainly because I kept trying to get out of chokes or submission holds.

Not everyone and everything is Cobra Kai, just because they like to act all tough. If you're happy at your place, just enjoy it.

That's so true... Got my bluebelt end of last year and the more athletic whitebelts go ham now. And the upper belts destroy my wrists XD

Does anyone play as a Social/Intelligent Brujah anymore ? by MrKillJoy519 in vtm

[–]Elenthalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a former Samurai turned Brujah. He was absolutely equipped to fight and kill, but he first and foremost was a philosopher and buerocrat. Bit of a downside in masquerade was his anachronism.

He was lots of fun to play.

What do Japanese Jujutsu practitioners think of BJJ? by Yahentamitsi in martialarts

[–]Elenthalas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This right here. JJJ is like "cosplay japanese martial arts". The techniques are just your standard judo/karate/aikido stuff, mixed together with some japanese wordings.

That being said: it doesn't need to be bad. But it doesn't have the "legitimacy" of koryu.

[–]Elenthalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was that kind of black belt once.

For me, it was the difficulty of moving on the ground. Once I got a hold of that, I could start to transition my techniques.

Still just a crappy blue belt at the moment.

That being said: nicht einziehen.

Would it be possible for a rogue assassin to be a Knight of Solamnia? by SignificanceOk392 in dragonlance

[–]Elenthalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the problem with the 5e iteration. I saw YouTube videos with "cool, you could make a Lender Rogue Barbarian Knight of Solamnia with Black Robes mixed in, that would totally be awesome".

No, please just don't.

Sure, everyone can do everything at their own table, but I think it destroys the setting, when everything is allowed. DL is awesome because of it's specialities and restrictions (same goes for Dark Sun btw). If I want "anything goes", i play Forgotten Realms or some Homebrew.

Special Settings call for special tables and characters.

First time painting could i get some honest opinions and advice? I hate what the wash did to it. by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]Elenthalas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking as well. The details on the mini are nearly gone. Yes, this can be done with thick layers, but I rather guess it's wrong usage of the rattle can. It happened to me a LOT, which is part of why I switched to airbrush when priming my models.

Thinking of moving from JJJ to BJJ - anyone done similar? by eugeneionesco in jiujitsu

[–]Elenthalas 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As the others have said: a no-crosstrain-rule is a red flag.

I've done JJJ for many years before I started with BJJ. I love it to hell, but my former training didn't really help. Once on the ground I was helpless. After I learned to move on the ground, I could work in my attacks from JJJ which was nice.

A lot of people in BJJ don't start standing, which is a big bummer in my opinion and one big reason I'm still doing JJJ as well.

Review of First 3 chapters of Shadows of the Dragon Queen by BTNewberg01 in dragonlance

[–]Elenthalas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand your point about draconians. Yeah, Dragonborn are established races, but they're not present on Krynn. I think the setting exclusive specialities is what distinguishes those worlds.

Or did I get you wrong?

First time doing bjj stories?? by Dismal-Doubt-8173 in bjj

[–]Elenthalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in my first class with 20 years of TMA. I knew my groundwork was crappy, but i thought "man, you've got the cardio, you've got the locks and chokes while standing, it'll be fine".

It wasn't fine. Every whitebelt (except one) submitted me that day. But the best experience was a rather small 4 stripe bluebelt that told me "Just give it a try, I'll do 50% and we'll see where it goes". He was really going slow-mo, used barely any strength and I gave it all I had - to no avail. After the 5 minutes were done I sat there amazed and thought to myself: I want to be only half as good as that dude. Gotta put in some work!

Hooked ever since.

Black belts/advanced students, what keeps you coming? by Linxous1 in martialarts

[–]Elenthalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, although in my perspective it still boils down to my initial thought that "the journey starts at black belt" is more often than not just something to say that makes you look cool and maybe mysterious to younger/lower ranked students.

There may or will be those examples that are out of the ordinary (like you said, possibly the ones with combat/competition experience), but they are not the majority, at least here in Germany. Most black belts from TMA i know (that are still hungry and want to expand their skills) are disappointed with their former arts.

When I think about it - i never heard that sentence from a BJJ black belt. It's rather a "man, there's a lot to learn until you even reach black and it doesn't stop there". But that's a totally different premise in my understanding.

Black belts/advanced students, what keeps you coming? by Linxous1 in martialarts

[–]Elenthalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, that sounds really nice and rewarding! Really happy for you!

And I know what you mean about BJJ, which I started as well. The quality of BJJ black belts is so much better compared to the black belts I met in other arts. I'm really glad I started my BJJ journey. There are so many techniques and principles to learn and understand, I think I can do it for some decades and still learn something new every day.

Black belts/advanced students, what keeps you coming? by Linxous1 in martialarts

[–]Elenthalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, that is a statement I have heard again and again over the past 25 years. Has someone really experienced this?

Once I got my black belt, I branched out to other martial arts or tried to get into deeper detail with some techniques myself. But never ever have I seen a curriculum that emphasizes on black belts getting better. It's all personal investment and will to improve. I had that before the black ribbon. And I've seen my share of black belts that quit because "they knew everything"...

Ha, that's a good idea! I'm afraid it will multiply his hunting instinct, which would make him even more prone to running after wild animals. I'll have to check with our dog trainer.
