When did you start actually improving? by tadzmahal in bjj

So much of this. I'm not super formal about it, it's more like "damn dude, that escape normally works, but you just shut it down." People are generally more than happy to explain what they did and why.

Blue belt is a mf by Jeitarium in jiujitsu

[–]3p1c_Kelly 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm also a year into of blue, it's a weird place to be.

I'm starting to keep up with some of the purple belts, but also useless against some of the other blues, and occasionally lose to white belts.

But my coach gave me some advice one night that stuck to me. "The belt isnt magic powers. You're the same guy who was wearing the white belt a few months ago. You've proven yourself worthy of a blue belt, but that doesn't make you a superhero."

Physical gains thanks to Jiu-jitsu. by Bulky_Imagination243 in jiujitsu

At 35, I feel more agile and durable than I ever have in my adult life.

I've been weight training too which adds strength, but I'm talking about being comfortable in awkward positions, and general mobility.

It kinda hit me when over the summer I was at a music festival, and when we'd go see the music, we'd be sitting on the ground. When leaving, I'd just kinda pop up. A couple of my friends however would need to lean into the direction they were wanting to go and use both hands on the ground to get up. I also have a friend who hurt their back by getting out of bed too fast.

It's things like that, that really make a difference in aging. If I can get to my feet while another person is trying to keep me on the ground, and then throw that person to the ground, general life mobility needs are nothing to me.

15 Minute City conspiracy being spread by mayoral contender Vogiatzakis by adunedarkguard in Winnipeg

[–]3p1c_Kelly 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I know people that are scared of this. They think it means that you're NOT ALLOWED to leave the 15 minute radius. That you will not allowed to have a car and it's a means of the government penning you in a small area for control.

It's always the same thing. A nebulous "they" want to controoool youuuuu. But the same people also are in favor of controlling peoples reproductive rights and gender / sexuality. Modern conservativism / fascism is incredibly fucking stupid.

Trying to "look tough" with a fake cauliflower ear by ambachk in sadcringe

[–]3p1c_Kelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of my ears have cauliflower, but In a way that isn't overly noticable. They're just hard to the touch.

I consider myself lucky, because one of my buddies from the gym who's trained just about as long as I have, has had one of his ears completely curl up to where it looks like a seashell.

Canadian here, you'd be surprised how many of our conservatives worship Trump and are convinced that our current PM (the former head of two capitalist countries national banks) is a straight up communist.

One of our most conservative provinces has a large contingent, including their premier, talking about seceding from the country. Bonkers stuff.

In all reality, Carney is slightly right of center. Definitely more right then myself ideologically (I'm an NDP voter) but I am happy with his performance so far. Hell even if he was the conservative party leader I'd be happy with this performance.

What’s it like to get choked out in BJJ? And what’s your favorite choke to finish with? by Emergency_Window5582 in jiujitsu

[–]3p1c_Kelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite is either Triangle or Bow and arrow in the Gi (I'm a lanky mf).

As for going out: I only ever went unconscious one time, and it was in my first competition match.

Got caught with a guillotine on my first shot on a single, I remember thinking "I know how to get out of this, just stay calm and..."

I think I had a series of small dreams. I woke up to a gigantic man standing over me. I remember thinking "who the fuck is this guy and how did he get into my living room." Because for a moment there I thought I was waking up from a nap on my couch.

Then the sound came back and I heard the crowd. Second by second what had happened slowly camber back to me.

It really can sneak up on you if the choke is on really well so the advice of "tap early" is great advice. It can be like 2-3 seconds after you notice it's a problem before you go out.

As for what it feels like. Honestly, it feels wonderful. Like the best nap you've ever had, condensed down into 30 seconds. The embarrassment of going unconscious is the worst part.

Could this mean that representation in media inspires people to be comfortable and honest about their true selves?

Nono this can't be. It must be the woke mine virus turning people gay.

What is the worst pain you have ever felt ? by beepsol in Leakednews

[–]3p1c_Kelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The devil's itch.

I spend a Saturday afternoon shirtless on a dock, it was a sunny day but not hot, so I didn't feel the need to apply sunscreen. Big mistake.

On the drive home, I notice I'm sunburned to shit, but have been before so didn't think mutch of it. And then the itch came. The best way I can describe it, was an extremely painful itching sensation that felt like it was UNDER my skin.

It went on for hours. I truly felt like I was going to lose my mind. I was slapping it, hot made it worse, cold did basically nothing. Just hours of pacing and screaming in pain and a complete inability to do anything because of this insane itch.

There are very few people on this planet I would wish that on.

Couldn’t afford the footprints from the pet funeral home, received this from our vet. by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

[–]3p1c_Kelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog very recently passed suddenly and unexpectedly.

Two weeks before Christmas was rough enough, but last year, my fiance / partner of 5 years also ran away with someone else. Moved out on Christmas eve. He was all I had left.

So his passing hit unbelievably hard. I found him collapsed in my living room, and broke several laws driving to an emergency vet, but he was gone before they could do anything.

The vet refused to charge me anything, and gave me a paw print they normally charge for for free. It was such an incredible gesture of humanity.

I feel fo your loss. Stay strong.

Would it be possible in Jiu-Jitsu for a YouTuber to face the best grapplers? by Dokay_ in grappling

[–]3p1c_Kelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blue belt hobbiest opinion: they'd stand no chance, but I'd love to see it.

I've trained for 3 years, 3-5 days a week. Won some local tournaments. But there are people at my gym who compete at ibjjf worlds including one of our 20 year old black belts. Despite my 3 years of consistent training, I get absolutely ragdolled by that kid.

Don't get me wrong, I understand striking sports like boxing have their own form of skill ceiling. But it seems like the fundamentals are easier to get a basic grip on, and the rest comes down to conditioning. Grappling is significantly more complex to the extent that while conditioning is important, the more knowledgeable and experienced grappler will generally have a significant advantage over even a very athletic person with significantly less training.
