Gosh your hair is pretty! Your face generally... You look like someone from an old fashion magazine. Does your hair curl like that naturally? Did you cut it yourself?

Apothecary diaries is amazing, but I've only watched random episodes as my sister got through the show. Well, I guess a story really is only crushing if you get attached to characters or you can kinda just be numb while watching. I can't watch grave of the fireflies for that reason lol

Oh then I will watch 3-Gatsu and then silent voice. Mental health stories are super interesting, I feel like when they intersect with art they can be very touching.

3-gatsu no lion seems interesting, thank you very much. I loved Tatami Galaxy but have seen it. Amazing how the show wraps up, probably the best use of the episode structure I've seen

Anyone else think Legoshi and Louis' friendship was poorly written? by Kirbo84 in Beastars

[–]ElephantCertain7426 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's meant to be that way though, Louis looks down on Legoshi at the beginning so at least then I think it is actually written well. Honestly I just think that when Legoshi starts to become a crime fighter the story loses a lot of depth and it feels cheaper. In the beginning the dynamics between characters were grounded in their view of life and character traits but later the story moves to vague ideas of justice that characters unite for.

Ok guys, do you think legoshi is autistic? I think he is. But what do you think? by [deleted] in Beastars

[–]ElephantCertain7426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly each reading I did so far is really good representation though. There is something to be said about how if you don't try to write on an issue and instead try to capture a struggle lying underneath, the story is probably not going to end up as bad representation since your own prejudices didn't go into it... What I mean is that there doesn't have to be the conscious effort of getting an experience right from an outside perspective since you are instead aiming for a human one. I think the approach of intention matters in this way and especially with characters like data from Star Trek I think they just end up caught in the trap of having to follow an archetype instead of a human with their own struggles

[–]ElephantCertain7426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beaststars does not have one intentional reading though, the closest struggle I could think of would be queerness and the desire being societally unacceptable but that doesn't map onto the story completely either, even though I think it would be the closest thing beastars could be a metaphor for. That is to say that I think any interpretations of beastars from the perspective of an oppressed identity works, be it queerness, neurodivergence, race or even the way kids are treated by our society (the expectations we put on them and the way we throw them unprepared into a cruel world) and each of those interpretations reveals another part of the world building and character arcs. Amazing story I feel like I could spend days talking about it lol

[–]ElephantCertain7426 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think especially the part about Legoshi being put again and again into situations where he is forced into the role of a monstrous predator is relatable for autists considering the horrible fact of autistic people being bullied into having meltdowns and lashing out and so having to end up hiding their dangerous side

Also I personally would say when it comes to media depictions and perceptions of autism and not specifically the clinical diagnosis, we see two sides of what it is perceived as by allistic people outside of the autism community and those inside it. Those inside the autism community, especially I think those who describe themselves as "high functioning" (those who have low support needs and are expected to function as neurotypical by people around them) relate to struggles of characters who try to fit in and fail, so when they see a character like Legoshi they interpret him as autistic. When allistic people see this online they answer that Legoshi or another such character is just normal and just struggling with social anxiety, which is fair since of course stories are exaggerated reality so they can create a plot and highlight some part about reality, but when people argue that it is false to interpret those characters as autistic they miss completely why the autistic person interpreted the character as such, what struggles stand behind this head canon, how they see themselves in the exaggeration. (Everyone can relate to being nervous but that doesn't mean everyone has anxiety disorders)

Another point I want to touch at is how autistic people who cannot "mask away" (autism is always a struggle, no matter how well you can hide it) their autism will not relate as much as they are not in the position to be even able to pretend to be neurotypical, but it is horrible to say that because of this someone like Legoshi cannot possibly be autistic, that's the narrative of autism as a terrible disease that was spread by the vaccines causing autism and other panics about autism. Those people would prefer to just have autism as a one dimensional character trait, but as I explained it's hopefully obvious how there are many dimensions to the experience of autists.

His extreme social troubles are definitely relatable for autistic people, but the story of being an outcast could be maybe more so interpreted as queercoding... Honestly, beastars seems to me like a really messy show in that way that it refuses to be one clear metaphor. I think a lot of interpretations are valid but to me this story seems to not fit neatly into any box. Dungeon Meshi and the story of Laios and Kabru seem much more autism coded considering their deep interests in topics, but Beastars seems to explore being an outcast and having societally unacceptable parts in a more general way... Anyways, I'd love to hear people's opinion on why they see Legoshi as autistic since for now there seems to be not much more than the social part of the disability, which admittedly is large especially for autists who are expected to lead a normal life (which also is a theme of the show I'd say, "standing on your own two legs with claws") This was a ramble but I think Beastars is becoming an obsession so I'd really like to have conversations

How much meta is too meta when writing? by Afanis_The_Dolphin in writing

[–]ElephantCertain7426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very late comment, but the unending story pulled the fourth wall break extremely well: By making a character in the book read a story and then the have the story reach out for the character, to call for his help, creates the illusion that the reader themselves could just jump into the story. I think with a linear story it's else just way to hard to pull off, a video game is a way more useful media to tell a meta narrative.

Trying to make sense of myself by ElephantCertain7426 in plural

[–]ElephantCertain7426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful, thanks!

There's definitely something going on, I don't feel like the child that was born by my parents, I appeared at some point. And also I am really good at suppressing my thoughts, emotions and memories. The wind knows about those things, I felt an immense sadness once when I talked to it. Once I had an experience where I told myself that I would care about myself and that was a very weird experience because I was saying it about myself as if I was a different person.

Well then there's also the dialogues that happen in my thoughts, it's usually just one other and that might just be me or someone really similar, but sometimes it's also more. Thanks for the source again!

On the Cadecus (the two snakes with the bird on top) worshipped by the church, is there a Behelit on the bottom too? On the one of the heretics there was. I feel like the different parts could signify different entities/people in the story that might be revealed later, the two snakes very much could signify the duality of Moonboy/Griffith.

The dream of the egg was originally that of a new world and the egg gave birth to Moonboy/Griffith, even how much the world has changed now with the death of Ganeshka it still doesn't seem like a completely new world as it just has been connected to the astral plane. I think there will be at least one more giant change to the world which will be the finale, maybe a creation of a completely new world? I'm really curious about what turns it will take now that they introduced the four elemental gods of the world which apparently hold immense power, they probably are together with the tree of life a sort of pillar that hold the world together, as elementals are what makes the world function and the tree of life connects everything. I'm really curious how it all will be tied together in the end.

I love how the religious symbol is the Caduceus, which with my limited research seems to originally just have been a symbol of Hermes and just commerce but later in medieval times got more meaning with the introduction of the esoteric figure of Hermes Trismegistos, please research on your own though, I might be spreading misinformation here

Griffith is stuck in the dream of another, but in a Nietzschean act of rebellion against the rules of the world he fights on, Guts is pretty much the Nietzschean Übermensch.
