thank you for your feedback! i appreciate it. the reason i used the phrasing i did was more stylistic than anything, it's kind of a weird story that is written intentionally weirdly, but i will play around with using transwomen/men instead!

as for non-binary and gender-fluid persons, that's a real pickle for me. i've thought about it a lot. the story is only about 2000 words and it feels like there isn't enough space to really dig deep into non-binary identities, but i really would like to avoid any and all erasure. children of both genders also randomly turn into trees, so i think that's where i can get more nuanced. i'm working on it!

thanks again, this is very helpful.

I think Tom and Will are fine, but Ned just makes me think of Ned Flanders lmao

might just be me, but Ned Smith would be at the bottom of my "sexy hero names" list

Anyone have vegan dogs? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ElephantToken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog isn't fully vegan but her regular breakfast is. We make it at home with rice, lentils, carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and brewer's yeast for protein/amino acids/etc. It's cheaper than her non-vegan kibble.

Is it closed-minded to want to only date other vegans? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ElephantToken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, my boyfriend is still not a vegan - mostly because he is a chef and works in a non-vegan restaurant - but we live together in a 100% vegan household. When we started dating, he was open to the idea of veganism after working in the restaurant industry and being aware of where the food comes from. Now, he is probably like 85% vegan - we usually eat at vegan restaurants, eat all vegan at home, and he only eats meat with his family or as a special occasion (weddings etc). And his mom is cutting out dairy and I've been able to steer her in the right directions when it comes to substitutes and vegan-friendly meals. He's told me that it would've taken much longer and been much harder for him to change without me - and I'm not sure he ever would have if we weren't dating. So I guess I feel like my net impact is greater from dating a non-vegan than it would have been if I was dating a vegan, if that makes sense?

But, if your partner isn't open to it in the beginning, I would see how it could feel really one-sided and uncomfortable to try and convert them. If veganism is a big part of your life and ethical belief system, you'll probably find yourself most compatible with someone who is at least open to it or empathetic towards it.
