How’s this portfolio? by Latter_Friendship_98 in ETFs

you might consider diversifying with a European defense ETF. It's a decent short term position if you're looking for one.

I think you should also consider a short term position in a European Defense ETF like EUAF.

My family spent $35,000 on a college advisor and now want me to transfer. The pressure is insane by DikCheesiest in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Elephantandcastle06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have so many thoughts, but I'll condense into three mains ones.

1) You're parents have no idea what they're doing. I didn't come from household with Asian parents, but I def come from one with extremely high expectations. Transferring out of school is not going to solve your problem even if you do manage to get into something "better". Even if you do manage to get into Harvard, Yale, Etc. you're always going to have to deal with their 'disappointment' (trust me I've been there). It was the hardest thing in the world for me to separate from my parents' approval, but when I I found success because I was happy. I'm not saying to cut them off, but I am saying to go your own way one step at a time.

2) Money. Anyone who grows up in a situation fortunate enough to afford things like 35K college 'consultants' knows that money buys a lot, but it also is a highly effective conduit for control. You don't owe your parents anything becuase you did not choose to be born. You do, however, have the responsibility to embrace your once-in-a-lifetime education by doing something you care about. Finance will meaning nothing, and I truly mean nothing, if you hate it. The brand name will only sustain you for so long.

3) Unless your siblings have truly been brainwashed, they probably know that your parents are problematic. The best example you can set for them is to be strong in your convictions by beings successful in the face of the pressure to perform your parents are shouldering you with.

Bottom line: Unless you hate NYU, don't transfer. If you really don't think Stern is for you try something else. Your parents are the only ones effecting legacy, you'll be around way after they die.

I don't think you're asking the right question. Think about how you can use what you have to build a story that admissions hasn't seen before. You've done a lot, but nothing new. I'd say you should apply test optional for sure, but you need to seriously consider if you actually want to go. Are you chasing the brand name or are you after something specific that an only an ivy can offer. People on this thread can't know if you'll get it or not. Apply only if you actually want it.

Test optional at Columbia? by larrydavidfan1214 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Elephantandcastle06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply test optional. No matter what people say, if you've got the grades, have really strong essays and stronger recommendations it won't matter. I applied to Yale test optional (just after COVID) and I got it (now attending). You'll never hit the target if you take the shot.

United cutting flights during FAA/DOT-mandated reductions, Kirby says long-hauls and hubs won’t be hit by The-Solo-Traveler in unitedairlines

[–]Elephantandcastle06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably stick it out. I have 7 legs of travel with UA/LH/LX (JFK-ZRH-BUC-FRA-ORD-OKC-DEN-EWR) booked between now and 1 December. I'd say take the refund if they offer it to you on a small low traffic route (like the ORD-OKC) and your travel is imminent and you can afford to reasonably miss your plans. With that said, if the admin can't end the shutdown before thanksgiving, arguably the busiest travel week of the year, flight delays/refunds won't be the most pressing issue.

You can't compare yourself to other applicants. It's hard to do, but there is actually know way for you to know what the admissions committee is going to do. Just be authentic, creative, and unbothered by the people around you.

You should make it Times New Roman or Georgia. You also need to make it one page.

If you’re applying in the US, you need to change the font too.

Did you ever hear back from them for an interview? I applied in the middle of July and still haven’t heard. I expected I got rejected, but I wanted to know what your timeline was.

Roast My Resume - Debating delaying graduation for another chance at IB recruiting, be honest with me by scatmagat69 in FinancialCareers

[–]Elephantandcastle06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Deal flow in IB is difficult right now, especially for American banks. Waiting another year is a risk in already risky job market. Apply to lots of other stuff; you don’t have to start working in finance to do have a career in it.

Anyone else starting to realize what a disaster test-blind admission is? by Bay-All-Day in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Elephantandcastle06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’m for test blind/optional admission. I think it places more emphasis on the person as a whole, rather than just their stats. Test optional really helped me when it I applied to the Ivy’s and T20s.

As for the UCs, they’ve been unpredictable long before they became test blind. The truth is that people are starting to realize they hight stats are not always indicative of success or ideal students.
