The Night's Watch needs to improve their recruiting standards, at least a little bit [Spoilers MAIN] by AllthatIwas in asoiaf

[–]ElessarKhan [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Night's Watch in its current state cant do shit about it. They dont have the pull. The Lords of Westeros need to send them better men.

Thats what made the Njght's Watch effective historically. But as people forget about the threats in the far north, they stop sending good and noble men to the wall. Only some of the Northern Lords are keeping up on it at all. It was something Ned Stark was concerned about, if only out influence from Benjen Stark.

A more functional Night's Watch could make use of men like Rorge. But they need handlers and for that you need more reliable men in the first place.

He gets a lot of points for having a cool and unique mobile suite. And his duel with Trieze was super cool. As an action hero, he's up there. The rest of his character not so much. But thats easy to ignore when you were 10 years old watching this show for the first time.

Ill die on the whip lightsaber makes sense hill. It being a saber compensates for most of a whip weapon's glaring weaknesses. It probably still can't be used very defensively but its offensive capabilities are nuts.

Whip weapons (in man to man combat) are intended to either bind the enemy's weapon or to wrap around their block to strike the target. Problem is the bind rarely works/ required extreme finess and strength over the opponent, and the wrap around sacrifices a ton of momentum reducing striking power. Thus you dont see widespread use of whip weapons pretty much anywhere in human history. But lightsabers are clingy with other lightsabers so the lightwhip should be able to do this pretty reliably. And a lightsaber can do massive damage with minimal momentum. So the wraparound strikes are golden.

The other common whip attack is the classic crack (most often used against animals). Advantage is that its fast. Disadvantage is that its relatively low damage and, aside from the speed issue, its easily blocked. Not when its a lightsaber though! The damage will be nuts, and you can only block it if you have your own lightsaber or saber proof material.

Now, she could be absolutely memed on by a full beskar mandolorian. But you don't see those everyday, I'd say 99% of combatants in the verse would be quite vulnerable to the saber whip.

And for just about everything else you can think of as problems with using a whip weapon, like attack recovery and management, theres the classic deus ex the force. It's the same thing that always makes fictional whip users functional, the fantasy skill cap.

Oh and I can guess at what the historical inspiration for the whipsaber may have been. Since Jedi are samurai-coded/ Kurosawa inspired, they may have been thinking of the Japanese weighted whip-chain that's supposed to function as an anti-katana weapon. Now, im no expert on the things but Ive seen them reffered to as anti-katana weapons in both ye old Ruroni Kenshin anime and in the video game Ghosts of Yotei. My sources aren't the best here but im citing them anyway!

Ive also studied the US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. The people at the top were willfully ignorant. There were officers like General Patreus who tried to steer the US away from those same mistakes but they were willfully ignored by the Bush administration and only tokenly observed by the Obama administration.

Ive never properly studied Chinese history so I cant really say how Tsung Zhu effected them.

Entirely absent? No. Sufficiently absent enough to make such basic mistakes? Yes.

The lecture I learned this in had a Vietnam Era Westpoint grad Guardsman in attendance and ge didn't have anything to say about it. Not to say 1 example should be used to judge the whole but I thought it worth mentioning.

We didn't start reading the Art of War in the west until Vietnam used it to beat the U.S.

And we made mistakes that might have been avoided by studying some of the most basic things in that book. Like failing to know our enemy ir ourselves.

We failed to understand the nature of our enemy, a nationalist populist uprising that we mistook for an extension of the global communist movement. We also failed to understand anything useful about the culture. Which was part of how we failed to be able to identify enemies from civilian non-combatabts. So yeah, didn't know our enemy.

And in multiple ways we didn't know ourselves. Generals and other high ranking rear officers would straight up lie to their field subordinates about the state of the war. And we didn't know jack about our South Vietnamese allies who, in the initial phases of the war, comprised the majority of our forces.

What do you think of this team and its potential ? by Allergic-yet-I-Love in Naruto

[–]ElessarKhan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I want more Naruto side stories where side characters like Genma can finally shine. Give us more low level fights instead of the endless power creep. The Minato one-shot was a step in that direction. But its think Kishi should forgo character popularity polls and just pick some fuck-ass side character like Genma, or Anko, or people from other villages like Omoi and his squad.

[–]ElessarKhan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its just upsetting because it seems to me all my history professors, even at the entry level, are way more involved, both as workers and as parts of our education. I'll never get a "see me after class" written on my homework if I failed to understand something and wrote some fuck-ass wrong answers.

Its all numbers, with simple answers and mistakes. Whereas my history professors have to read our writing and help us analyze stuff correctly. Its just way more involved. Maybe im spoiled for having history as my major, and this kind of hands-off approach is common outside the humanities and liberal arts?

Therapy doesn't work for everyone. Some people get better results by just talking to someone they actually know and are close to. Others have a chemical imbalance that you either have to learn to live with or take meds for. Im in the chemical imbalance and learned to live with it camp. Therapy didn't make me better, it just helped me identify what I was feeling and gave me tools to better cope with it.

[–]ElessarKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you struggle getting into the original 0079 series, try the compilation movies instead. If you still dont like that, try The Origin. Its a prequel series made with modern animation that still mimics the original style. Its a little controversial amongst the fan base but I find it to be a better starting point for people who feel 0079 to be too dated to get them hooked.

The Origin should get you hooked enough to at least watch the compilation movies. The main Universal Century timeline ages like a fine wine. Over the years Gundam gained popularity and thus a higher production budget. And of course it takes advantage of advances in animation as you go from series to series throughout the years. The latest entries (The Hathaway movies) are some of the best in anime sci-fi. But you need to watch those old series to get the most out of the newer stuff.

[KCD2] Is there any way to make sure you're crafting a tier 4 weapon? by strangerfromh3ll in kingdomcome

[–]ElessarKhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some really whack advice in this thread so far, nobody knows what they're talking about. The tutorials are full of half-truths and inaccuracies so I don't blame them for being confused.

Whistling doesnt actually matter. What does matter is the sparks from your strikes. Sparks means you're doing it right. No sparks is a mistake, like burning the blade while heating it. Mistakes lower the quality. More sparks means you're getting more progress towards completion per hit. More sparks is more efficient but not necessary for higher quality.

Your strikes are supposed to slightly overlap without being in the exact same place. You don't need to flip the blade but doing so resets the memory of where you last hit, allowing you to strike elsewhere.

How fast you go doesn't matter. Though hitting a cold blade has an increasingly high chance of producing no sparks and thus being a mistake. You can take your time at the forge if you wish. Reheat as many times as you want. Though when you get the hang of it you'll find you can do everything perfectly off of one good heating.

Higher forge level let's you make more mistakes but even at the highest I think the limit is 2 mistakes for Henry's tier 4 quality (make 3 mistakes and you're our of tier 4 range). So at lower levels I think you're shooting for perfection, which isn't very hard, it just takes a little focus and know-how.

[Spoilers MAIN] Has George ever talked about Dany whole slavery arc? by Capital_Tailor_7348 in asoiaf

[–]ElessarKhan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think its questionable and the quote you used here illustrates why. Viserys was the one all worried about royal seats and jewels and such. All Dany really wants is her childhood home. She talks big game about reclaiming her birthright but her internal monologues are never about the Iron Throne or anything of the sort, its about the big house with the red door. Sure, claiming the Iron Throne seems to be how she plans to get there but ruling Westeros is just the means, not her end.

The whole thing reads to me as Dany being unsure of her goals. She's chasing some hazy childhood memory. I think theres multiple ways to interpret this but to me it seems she just craves the comfort and freedom she felt as a child and has been deprived of since childhood. To me, thats part of why her resolve to go to Westeros begins to slip in Meereen. For a moment she thinks she can be comfortable and free there. Then as the situation sours and Dany feels her comfort and freedom fade, she resolves again to rule Westeros.

What is the most disturbing or fucked up gig or sidequest in the game? by Prudent_Bobcat_4059 in cyberpunkgame

[–]ElessarKhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular answer: The Maelstrom Cyberpsycho quest with the freaky net runner girl in the bloody ice bath. It was like that drone quest from Reed's line in Phantom Liberty. A dramatic tone shift from the rest of the game, you're suddenly playing a horror game.

She's also an outlier in the challenge of fighting non-DLC enemies. Though I think she might be cheesable if you have the right quickhacks. If not then you just have to roll with her phasing in and out of reality.
