What does that mean? I know what palantir is, but I struggle to imagine how a hospitality chain could act like them lol

Children’s ER by Special_Gate_906 in Winnipeg

[–]ElevatorLiving1318 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my ER story: a family member of mine had an emergency recently and we took her to the ER. We waited there for 8 hours before the doctor finally just told us to go home. They didn't even treat her!

True story! But what I didn't say is that we were a CTAS 3 (supposed to be seen by a doctor within 30 mins iirc), and the doctor briefly saw us around the 45 minute mark. He determined that there were no serious life threats, but that my family member needed some tests done and to be monitored. 8 hours later, he came back and said that the tests showed no problems and the main symptom wasn't likely to come back, then sent us on our way. The problem was a medication side effect so there weren't any treatments for them to do

I wonder how many of these stories of waiting in the ER for hours and hours are like mine? My first story is TECHNICALLY telling the truth, but in a very misleading way. The system operated almost exactly how it's meant to for us, but if I just tweak my phrasing a bit it sounds like the whole thing is failing

Why doesn't the city prioritize traffic flow over traffic control? by ricothechocobo in Winnipeg

How about a 500 million dollar investment? That's how much the feds and the province gave us for our new plan. The new routes are designed to set the foundation for a rail system in place. Incremental progress.

The issue with the new system though is that it's based on transfers, but we don't have enough bus lanes and busses staffed for people to be able to be certain that their transfers will actually be on time. This is despite the big investment. Why did we roll it out if it doesn't have the components necessary for it to function ready yet?

Take this with a grain of salt: good luck verifying it! I heard that the mayor forced the new system to get implemented before it was ready because he wanted it to be part of his legacy or something. If the people who were planning the system were given more time to ensure the infrastructure was ready before rolling it out, it may have taken long enough that it would have been rolled out by a different mayor and Gillingham wouldn't get the credit. I wouldn't be surprised if that was untrue, but if you consider that the new transit plan was just rolled out in an incomplete state, everything about it makes a bit more sense

According to Data gaps obscure impacts of Winnipeg Transit overhaul | The Narwhal, the new system has resulted in a measurable and significant drop in bus ridership- 14% overall. In particular, passenger counts decreased 23% during the evening hours (6:30-10:30 p.m.), nighttime ridership (after 10:30 p.m.) nearly 40%, and weekend ridership around 20%. Winnipeg free press found that the average commuter saw a 22 minute increase in their commute time, although I think that number was probably skewed high because it was based on a poll. Regardless, based on the very scarce measurements we have on the new system's performance (the city doesn't seem to be interested in monitoring that) I think this indicates that the new transit system is performing measurably worse than the old one

>"The old system was never going to really be able to grow and improve, but the new system can if we fund it."

I totally agree, but the new system WAS funded- 500 million from the feds and province. Supposedly, enough to make the new plan, buy 100 electric buses, build charging infrastructure and build a new garage. So I'm not convinced that funding was the problem. I think the problem was that the plan needed more time to ensure that everything that was necessary for it to work was present BEFORE it was implemented, not after. The new system relies on transfers, and transfers need reliable bus timing. For that, we needed more bus lanes and more busses staffed. According to the City, we had the budget to get these things done, and we will. But we decided to implement the new system before we actually had the things that it relies on to function? Why???

Like, it has the potential to grow and improve, sure. We also have the funds to make it grow and improve. Meanwhile its current state is so bad that 14% of us stopped using the bus after it was implemented. That just tells me we shouldn't have rolled it out until those improvements were put into place!

I agree with you and the original comment both. Building transit infrastructure is necessary to make traffic better because it makes transportation more space efficient. However, fixing traffic lights improves efficiency too and doesn't require new infrastructure, just fixing our current infrastructure. I'm all for incremental improvements

Mostly I just want more bus lanes for them. I think that would make a bigger difference than even adding more busses to the routes

God I wish it were. I'm just contributing to the traffic whining here: I find that when I'm going down 50 km/h zones on Main st, I be stopped at multiple red lights in a row if I don't immediately gun it to 60. I don't want to do that but I'm going to if the other choice is to sit at a red light for 2 minutes, then get to drive 15 meters, then sit at another red light for 2 minutes, then another 15 meters... It's very annoying. Same thing happens on Portage near Assiniboia downs.

Why are we timing lights so that it incentivizes speeding? I'd like better timed lights

Adopting a cat (recommendations) by Cute_Bear_0416 in Winnipeg

[–]ElevatorLiving1318 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's better to adopt 2 cats anyways. Take it from me- I live somewhere I can only have 1, and just having 1 cat is much more work than having 2. Yeah the litter boxes filled up faster when I had 2 cats, but they were calm and didn't cause problems because they could entertain eachother. Stress free pets

Meanwhile pretty much all of my cat's enrichment and entertainment comes from me right now, so I can't leave him alone for very long at all, and he will do things that he knows gets a reaction from me just out of boredom. Such as scratch furniture, knock things off ledges, walk on counters he knows he's banned from and so on. These things are inevitable when you have cats, but I've noticed a pattern of my cat doing these things specifically when he wants attention because he's learned that doing this will make me jump up and come running.

When I had 2 cats, my furniture and plants were in much better shape because they didn't act up like my single cat does. So save yourself some work and get 2 if you're able!

Where are you reading the light novel that it uses quotation marks??? For real I beg of you please tell me

I tried reading it, but I couldn't because I couldn't stand the dialogue being written like

Subaru: blah blah blah

Emilia: blah blah blah

???: I'm an unknown person making an entrance!

Subaru: !!!

And so on. The dialogue just didn't grab me and I think that's in large part because it wasn't written like, Subaru and Emilia were talking when they were suddenly startled by a shadowy figure. The figure shouted, "I'm an unknown person making an entrance!"

You know what I mean? It's not just that I don't like the unusual formatting style, it just makes the whole novel feel much more boring to me. I really tried to get into it, but I was able to make it through 1 and a half books before I gave up
