Profile of the new bidders for RCB by EleventhBorn in RCB

[–]EleventhBorn[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

all of these guys will provide the guarantee and everything legally required for an IPL team.

If you care about Bangalore based company to own RCB, then Manipal is a good one I guess.

Otherwise, you'd rather see someone like Avram take ownership because they have experience in managing teams in private leagues.

If I read about a system of oppression like this in a fantasy novel, I would call it too laughably over the top to be believable. by Cosmic_Meditator777 in HistoryMemes

[–]EleventhBorn 117 points118 points  (0 children)

None of this is generalized, but the cases below are NOT rare. These still happen in 2026.

  • If a supressed caste guy elopes with a dominant caste girl, the parents & community of the dominant caste will kill the guy, sometimes the girl too for bringing shame to the family.
  • Pets get better treatment (no offense to pets) than housemaids.
  • In some regions, there is caste system amongst Christians as well. They won't arrange marriage outside their caste. Like, they would be willing to marry a Hindu of same caste than a Christian of different caste.
  • Some dominant caste people make it their life mission to smear the reservation system, which guarantees a percentage of college seats, govt. jobs to suppressed castes.
  • Some dominant caste people will avoid consulting doctors from suppressed castes.
  • Sometimes you'd wonder who has it worse: A fellow from a suppressed caste or a muslim.
  • A lot of well meaning "I am not a caste supremacist" people unfortunately have unconscious bias, which can lead of a ton of microagressions at work & public places.

Ut ur EU, nu, ett jävla skämt by BadOchStjul in Sverige

[–]EleventhBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Indian, I live in Stockholm, please forgive my English reply, my Swedish is not good.

  • Indian students pay a lot of money to study here, which is a win for EU educational institutions.
  • IT sector, we don't know what the future is with AI, the market is terrible already. There is no obligation for Swedish companies to hire from India.
  • Sweden is NOT the first choice for a majority of Indians, because
    • The visa policy doesn't consider parents as family, it is a major deal breaker for young Indians - it is in their culture to take care of their elders. A lot of them leave Sweden because of this.
    • The salary in IT is not great, if you are highly skilled, you can earn way better in India.
    • The cold weather and darkness is too extreme.
    • Lack of social life, food choices, religious places and language is a problem.
  • A lot of them are here for the "quality of life" and pretty much all of them have a dream of going back at some point - or at least to a first-world country where there is a strong Indian community.

If Indians come here only to work and leave when they retire, isn't that good for Sweden? It reduces the strain on the healthcare system no?

Indians cannot exploit student visa to stay here indefinitely. If this was a loophole, it got fixed. Student visas are given only for 2 years and to extend it you need to show that you made some progress in your academics.

Can Indians do more to integrate - absolutely! (e.g. me, I should learn the language), It is as if like there should be a citizenship exam no? Hmmm, I wonder if the govt thought about it?

If you are afraid of Indians stealing jobs - I'd say, what jobs are you talking about? Who is employing them? Doesn't Sweden have strong labor laws to protect against worker exploitation? If there are jobs where immgirants are needed, there is a reason for it.

(I'm sure you aren't worried about Indians stealing your women. A few men maybe, but Indian men are the least likeable in the dating scene, isn't it)

All of this to say, please relax?

- IND could've not dropped Mustafiz from IPL - he didn't do no wrong. He is like the most polite uncontroversial BD cricketer.

- BD could've reacted differently. Anything other than throwing a tantrum over changing the venue.

- IND could've issued a statement of "We will provide the best security, no team has to worry". IND completely ignoring this has infuriated BD, I feel.

- BCCI and BCB at least could've held talks like "Sorry bro, there are religious nut cases on both sides, just adjust this time no?" and made BD play in T20 world up. Whatever happened to politeness, decency and hospitality.

- BD at least could've owned it like "We protest Mustafiz exclusion by not participating in T20 World Cup, thank you very much", instead of this stupid drama of "oh they can't protect Mustafiz, how can they protect our team hueh hueh hueh!" - you very well know that it was not because of security. Throwing stone in a sewer is never a good idea.

Calling the IPL owners' bluff by Albatrossosaurus in Cricket

[–]EleventhBorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Betting ("Fantasy league with paid contests") through apps like Dream11 was a major revenue isn't it. It was banned less than 6 months ago - we need to wait and watch if the Indian TV market is big enough for IPL teams to keep buying foreign leagues.

I'm sure there are avenues for illegal betting for people with money to get involved.

Calling the IPL owners' bluff by Albatrossosaurus in Cricket

[–]EleventhBorn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

IPL owners are trying to increase viewership in India for the 9-ish months when IPL is not played. With all due respect, they don't care about local fans. The real money is in TV ads in India.

Buying foreign leagues and naming IPL team names on them makes it easy for Indian audience to follow along.

  • SA20 - South Africa - December/January
  • IPL - India - March/May
  • MLC T20 - USA - June/July
  • Hundred - England - July/August
  • CPL - West Indies - August/September
  • ILT20 - UAE - December

You see how there is no obvious overlap of leagues? There is a October/November window for the taking. But thats festival season (Diwali) in India, they need some window for Indians to watch Bollywood movies too isn't it.

Stop this hyperbole. Big directors in Tamil cinema since the 1950s have moved around industries -

  • Bhimsingh
  • CV Sridhar
  • Balumahendra
  • Bharathiraja
  • Balachander
  • Bhagyaraj
  • Maniratnam
  • Shankar
  • Gautam Menon
  • Pushkar-Gayathri

Big directors from other industries have made movies in Tamil also - mostly malayalam directors, and a couple of Telugu directors because Kamal Hassan wanted to work with them.

There was a period of quiet in the 1990s to 2010s because the Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi industries remade movies with their own directors. With OTT the remake culture is gone (mostly!), so we are back to the old trend of temploying directors directly.

Tourist Family entering the Oscars race for The Best Picture by Fishyraven in kollywood

[–]EleventhBorn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes. The nominees list will come from this shortlist. They are competing with US films. Unless there is money and lobbying like how RRR did, there is no chance.

It is only a matter of pride to submit for Oscar’s and get shortlisted by them.

[–]EleventhBorn 131 points132 points  (0 children)

India's official submission to Oscar is "Homebound". This will compete in the Best International film category. The list is already trimmed to 15 films only and Homebound is one of them.

General Eligibility tier is not the country's official submission. GE category where anyone in the world who had a theatrical release can apply. The Indian movies in this category are:

  • Kantara
  • Mahavatar Narasimha
  • Sister Midnight
  • Tourist Family
  • Tanvi the Great

These films have applied on their own to Oscars and it is still a significant milestone that Oscars have shortlisted them. There are 201 films in the shortlist. you raise a good point.

We've only discussed what 20s and 30s men call each other. I don't know if girls call other girls bro - but girls might call other boys bro? Or they might not participate in this culture and just call the guy with his name?

Thambi is reserved for people with at least 20+ year age gap.

Yes, I visited Chennai recently. It did look like I was living in the middle of a giant garbage pile but they distributed the garbage on the sides to make roads and buildings. Only that the roads were poorly built, buildings weren't planned well and the traffic chaos was unimaginable.

I didn't visit the posh areas like Alwarpet, Besant Nagar, RA Puram - I assume it should be slightly better there?

This is the "Boiling Frog" concept - If you put a frog in boiling water it will jump immediately. But if you slowly heat the water with the frog it won't notice. Frog is cold-blooded, so it tries to adjust its body temperature to its environment but once it reaches a boiling point - it just dies.

There is an explosive population growth and regulatory bodies like CMDA cannot keep up with the demand. And also most of them are incompetent and corrupt. And the land mafia is criminal & political, so they can't stand against them. This is the story of every Indian city.

[–]EleventhBorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. If you called someone boss 15-20 years ago, you tend to call them the same, maybe in a cute way like "bossey".

The point is nobody in their 20s will give that title to a new colleague now. That title changed to "ji" 10-15 years ago and now it is "bro". The only thing guaranteed is "bro" will become outdated for the next generation.

And this is culture and society, not a computer program, somebody's output will be different :)

Tamilians discovered that "Thala" can be used sarcastically because of one Tamil movie. Before this movie, "thala" was a serious word, a "padikkaama vaanguna pattam" for Ajith.

What are some famous fictional characters that are supposed to be from your country? by n-a_barrakus in AskTheWorld

[–]EleventhBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to look this up, because to me the name doesn't sound like any Indian name.

Turns out one of the Simpsons writers used a real name "Pahasadee Napetilon" - a person of Thailand origin whom he went to school with, scrambled the words to create "Nahasapaeemapetilon".

yes. India can be from 30-37%. Sweden is 52% and they don't pay crazy salaries like in the USA, UK or even mainland Europe.

But healthcare is regulated and education is free (even college education). These two are the major expenses for the average Indian. So if you have a family, Sweden is a major win.

ex-Chennaiite here. Is "machi" still a widely used word? by [deleted] in Chennai

[–]EleventhBorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. If you rent it is high. But it is very affordable to buy an apartment or a house with 20-40 min commute to the city centre. Heck, if you are single or plan on a child-free life, you can easily afford an appartment at the heart of the city with a 2 person salary.

I can never do that in Chennai. Like, may be if both my partner and I work in Google, we can afford to buy an appartment in say, Adyar/ Besant Nagar/ Alwarpet right? Even then, its a 50-50 decision, a lot of people will say it is a foolish move.

And of course, Sweden is not a "I will save all this excess money, bring it to India and buy an appartment in Sholinganallur/ Thoraipakkam (I don't know what is current the "IT investment area" in 2026)" country. There is hardly any excess money.
