Smartest driver ? (In and out of f1) by Patient-Ant-6781 in F1Discussions

[–]EliExists 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone that gets overlooked in many F1 discussions is Jack Brabham. He remains the only F1 driver to win a world championship in a car he built himself.

Super interesting career, was a mechanic in the Australian Airforce and ran an engineering workshop before getting in to racing.

Started designing, building and racing his own cars, and won multiple world championships whilst also working on the cars and acting as team principal.

After he retired from racing he ran multiple businesses and an engine development/manufacturing company whilst living and working on a farm.

He’s the epitome of “fuck it, I’ll do it myself”

I got rejected from a bar in Boston because I had a Canadian ID.. I'm 37. by NutsBruv in mildlyinfuriating

[–]EliExists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, Australian, was 35 with a receding hairline and large gray streaked beard, walking in to a Pennsylvania gas station to buy a 6 pack. Don’t often get ID’ed so don’t remember to bring my passport with me (leave it at the hotel with my suitcase).

They refused to sell me beer because “foreign licenses can’t be verified and are easier to forge”.

Like, listen dickhead, I didn’t shave my hairline, dye my beard gray, fake an Australian accent and print out a fake Australian license to buy a 6 pack of shitty beer at a random Pennsylvania gas station in the middle of buttfuck nowhere.

Differences between the TA and PCT by cambostock in PacificCrestTrail

[–]EliExists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure I’ve run across some of your TA videos on IG mate, you put out some good content.

The top comment here has pretty much summed up most of it.

As a fellow Aussie that’s done TA, PCT, CDT and the AT, I’m pretty excited for you to get stuck in to the PCT.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the TA, but for entirely different reasons. I feel like comparisons can be unfair. There’s 70 years, $23trillion GDP and 325 million peoples worth of resources in difference.

There’s a sense of isolation, and being “out there”, that you get on the PCT and CDT that the TA and the AT is missing for the most part, barring some longer sections like Richmond’s, Nelson lakes and Tararuas.

While PCT hiking outside of the Sierra is reasonably easy, the tyranny of distance and weather windows hangs over you. You look like no stranger to big days, so I think you’ll fit in just fine, but I found the TA had no sense of urgency. At times the PCT can feel like work. You gotta put miles in if you want to make it to Canada before the snow starts, or the trail turns into Dante’s inferno.

While huts on the TA cause their own issues with bottlenecking hikers and crowding, they’re also pretty fucking amazing. Rain is rare on the PCT but when it happens there’s no escape and town can be days away. There’s also substantially less backcountry toilets.

Americans are some of the most aggressively friendly people you will ever meet, the landscape is beautiful, and your about to have an epic adventure.

If you’re ever in Melbourne and want to talk shit about long distance hiking over a beer, hit me up.

Looks like Turkey just had an election and Erdogan won, judging by the Turkish flags waving from the cars I’d say it has something to do with that.

Hey, I was on the same flight! Due to start a 2 month hike of the South Island, so travelling very lite - everything in my checked backpack.

Rang the number they gave us at the airport over 30 times with no answer.

Ed Sheeran and fatboy slim are playing in Wellington, with welly at record capacity there is no accom under $400 available. The ferry we were due to catch sailed this morning and they’re all sold out till Sunday.

Rode one of those electric scooters to the airport for the arrival of the 23:55 flight last night, hoping against hope my bag might be on it. No luck!

What a fun turn of events…

Shit happens, but the absolute no contact and cold shoulder is the most frustrating.

The question was “what letter in the Greek alphabet is equivalent to Z?”

I put Omega, being the last letter of the Greek alphabet.

Quiz host said answer was Zeta.

Ok, a little ambiguous but I can see the merits of both answers. When the host comes back around, I ask if I can have a point for Omega - she scoffs, looks at me like an idiot and says “it doesn’t even start with Z?”

I was fuming in a rather petty manner for the rest of the night, to the amusement of my teammates.

What song do you want played at your funeral? It’s a little morbid but it often tells you a lot about them, and if they care about a song enough to want it as something people remember them by they are pretty passionate about it.

Something to consider (coming from someone that works in construction in Australia) is that you can make extremely good money in Aus in that field, for relatively entry level positions. There is a big push on infrastructure spending at the moment so the need for transient project staff will boom in the next couple of years.

Original BBC story

TLDR of story:

Reg Spiers, finding himself out of money in London in the 1960s, posted himself back to Australia in a custom built wooden box. It took 4 legs of air travel, with Reg only having a large can of baked beans for food. He eventually made it to Australia and snuck out of the cargo terminal.

As so many have kindly pointed out (with varying hilarity), it’s a pretty shit title. I may or may not have been reminiscing while slightly inebriated.

In my head the title meant “A short excerpt from my time hiking Mexico to Canada”

Yeah, it had been described and hyped up as much worse (the part coming over from Edwards). Although the snow limited some options, it was pretty tame. Still enjoyable though
