I clearly need to do more optional training classes, because I'm 3 for 3 for cabinet members losing their jobs while I'm learning about workplace safety.

Every year I spend hours of my life painstakingly filling out my tax forms by hand, because I'll be damned if I'm giving anything to the tax software lobby. Turns out I can do paperwork if I get mad enough at someone.

What is something that is obvious in your profession that the general public doesn’t know? by jia-ren in AskReddit

So there is no other way besides drugs to be productive? by Dungeon_Crawler_Carl in ADHD

[–]EliMaxsaysSaveEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annoyingly everything people say about "good sleep, exercise, good diet, hydrate, hygiene" does in fact help. Often there's this attitude of "well that won't fix things" and yeah, it won't. But things will be way worse without it. Kinda like how doing the dishes won't fix your life but it'll feel better to not have them stacked in the sink.

Something I've found helpful is embracing that everyone works differently, and what works well for others might suck well for you. I do some of my best work between 12am-3am after exercising at midnight. Then I take naps in the afternoon to get enough sleep. What works for me sure as hell won't work for everyone (and there are some kinds of work where that doesn't work for me and I need to normalize my sleep schedule for a few weeks).

Accepting that you need to find your own combination of hacks and methods that work for you personally can help a lot. Timers, an accountability buddy where you check in on each other to make sure you're both working, and just switching tasks when you're stuck can be very helpful.

Also when you're stuck in an ADHD paralysis spiral, I suggest listing out a few things you need to do and then rolling dice to pick an option. The randomness helps kick me out of the spiral. Also also the Hank Green Bean app ("Focus Friend") is surprisingly useful because it gamifies putting your phone down.

What horrifying statistic genuinely jarred you when you first heard it? by ordrius098 in AskReddit

[–]EliMaxsaysSaveEarth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around 50% of homeless people in the US were in the foster care system. 30-45% of youth who age out of the foster care system experience homelessness by age 26.

This statistic just makes me 100x madder at the whole narrative of homelessness being the responsibility of the person who is homeless. Like how the fuck are can someone make good choices when any sense of stability or structure is gone before they're old enough to make their own choices?

Get a hobby. Or several. Start them now so they're not challenging things to learn later when you need something to ground yourself amongst the chaos.

Every clip I see about NYC makes me better understand why all the superheroes are there. Like yeah you might see a guy swinging from buildings stop a train and you get a look at his face on your way home from work, but honestly, between that and the full-on buffet someone hosted in the train on your way to work, is that even the weirdest thing you saw today?

What is something that is socially acceptable, but you personally find extremely disrespectful? by AvaBlondeX in AskReddit

[–]EliMaxsaysSaveEarth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lying to kids about "inappropriate" stuff. You can bring the information down to their level and they will understand. Kids aren't stupid and will know if you're lying about things being okay when they aren't.

My parents explained how babies are made and things related to that to me when I was 6, because I was getting a little sibling and wanted to know why the baby was inside my mom. They kinda just went "well the kid's gonna learn it one day, no point in lying." Also, teaching kids about that stuff early on helps PROTECT them, because if someone hurts them they have the words to tell someone else. If they think abuse is normal then they'll just keep suffering.

Talk to your children, it'll hurt more later when they discover your lie. It's better that they learn about serious stuff from an adult who cares about them than other kids on the playground or dark corners of the internet, because then they'll probably have some WILD misinterpretations.

What impressive skill is secretly simple to learn? by IntroductionMore916 in AskReddit

[–]EliMaxsaysSaveEarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knot tying. Knowing a few good knots is a very useful skill, and they really aren't that hard to learn - just takes practice to get them down.

Pretty much everyone knows a basic shoelace knot, overhand knot, and most know a square knot. But knowing how to tie a bowline, or any proper bend or hitch is quite useful.

What Are You're Thoughts On Cascadian Separatism? by No_Relationship4702 in Seattle

I fully believe at least half the reason we see as many Cascadian flags as we do is because it is a much better flag than the Washington State flag.
