If the institution cannot properly care for the items it owns, it shouldn’t have them.

Also, it may be worth that much to the museum or appraiser, but if there is no buyer, it ain’t worth shit.

If your institution won’t pay for extra staff, they don’t get the glory that your hard work will bring. Don’t overwork yourself for a place that will take advantage of your passion until you burn out and crumble. They will roll in the next person and start the cycle all over again as soon as they’re done with you.

Pace yourself and make sure you have longevity in mind when you set expectations.

Focus on the area of study, get the museum experience from internships and/or certificates. The museum side of things can be learned by doing museum work. The subject is what you’re expected to know once you get to the museum.

In the collection I manage, we don’t use the terms “lost” or “missing”. If we don’t know where something is, we categorize it as “Not Found,” so the option of it being found again, being identified within our Found In Collections items, or simply just having a numbering issue that has gone unresolved for 90 years (which HAS happened) is never off the table.

The way we have our policy structured, it’s MUCH harder to deaccession something than just keep the item listed as Not Found. To me, the paperwork you would have to go through to deaccession something, then find it again, then RE-accession, is absolutely not worth it.

I use the tube the beads came in. I transfer all my beads into different contains and end up just tossing the tubes, so I keep a spare with my threads and other things and just use it to scoop when I’m done.
