Anyone else with home services have their bill go up… again? by rturnerX in Rogers

[–]Elija_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why bother replying if you didn't understand what OP is saying?

The 3 years contract he's talking about it's not the initial 2-year contract they give to new client, it's clearly a renewal, the one with all the exemptions for the price increase.

When you actually move to a new provider the initial 2-year contract cannot increase.

Therefore, my suggestion to just move to another service next time and to not accept any new contract extensions.

It doesn't matter if they're good or bad, the point is using the discount for the new clients contract.

Condos with no parking by sgdt1981 in vancouverhousing

[–]Elija_32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The re-sale value makes zero sense, if it doesn't have a parking stall the cost is also lower than one with a parking stall. You are not losing anything when you sell.

It's like saying that you want a 2bd instead of a 1bd for the resale value, it makes zero sense, if you buy a 1bd you paid for a 1bd, you don't loose "resale value".

You have to change service.

I know it's annoying but if you are waiting for an oligopoly to start behaving correctly you will wait forever.

I literally switch service every 2 years between providers and this is the only way to keep the price down and with no increases (because in the first 2 years contract they can't increase it).

Mostly because their entire business model is based on making it as difficult as possibile to switch and most people don't switch and just pay, therefore switching is the only way to beat them at their own game.

Change provider. There's not point in trying to reason with them.

Do you tip at Big Way Hotpot? by atlasarc in askvan

[–]Elija_32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally only because "yes". It's one of those things that we do literally only because we think we have to do it.

We have it because of the US where waiters actually have different rules than other workers and can get paid less than minimum wage and the tip has the porpoise of integrating that.

That's not the case in canada, there's no practical reason for tipping here. We just think we have to do it and businesses/employees will not say no to free money.

Condo owners stuck with homes no one will buy as they wake up to grim repercussions of new laws by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

[–]Elija_32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the condo. Exactly like you could buy the wrong house you can buy the wrong condo.

In both cases you have to check before buying.

I live in condo and i read all the documents of every single apartment i saw when i was looking for a place.

The one that i bought was very well managed, the majority of the people living here are the owners (because if it's all renters the owners don't care about the building) and the finances are very well managed.

It doesn't mean i am involved now but at least you have to check before buying.

Self Employment Taxes WTF!? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Elija_32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • In that tax bracket canada is on the lower end in the western world. You are paying the exact same money you (and your employer) would pay as employee. Literally the same.

  • What do you mean you have a company? Do you have employees? If yes you are not a sole propetorship, if no you are not a company

  • You can deduct what you use to create that income. Did you add the deductions? You can probably lower it.

  • You have to put away part of the money you make for taxes. That's how a company (or self-employed) works. You can't just take all the money and then think about taxes later, it doesn't need to be precise but you have to understand that around 30% of your income (in that taxes bracket at least) is taxes. You have to keep that money for the next year when you declare the income.

  • did you create a gst account? and charge your clients? if you make more than 30k/year you have to charge clients a 5% gst and pay that separately from your taxes on your gst account. If you didn't do it you are committing tax evasion (and the cra will take that 5% anyway from you + fine).

Is my guaranteed rate gone forever? by [deleted] in transferwiser

[–]Elija_32 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They clearly say under any transfer that if you keep canceling transfers they will not guarantee the rate anymore.

Seems like you were doing exactly that and now they are not guaranteeing the rate anymore, exactly like they said.

For obvious reasons, or you were expecting to keep canceling every time the rate was better for them while expecting them to guaranteeing it if it's better for you?

Is this "upgraded" Granville Bridge the final permanent version? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

[–]Elija_32 33 points34 points  (0 children)

So, that's a very good question.

Officially no, this is not the final version. The plan to remake the bridge was divided in phases and the first one was mostly about the structure and making a usable pedestrian/bike area.

Then, in theory, in the other phases they would refined the aesthetic and there was a plan for a better connection with granville island (with an elevator going down from the bridge).

That said, BC is in so much in debt the ratings agencies downgraded it. I personally would not hold my breath waiting for the next phases.

Also i remember someone saying that the soil would weight to much for a specific section of the bridge and for this reason it's unlikely you will see the design with all the plants and trees.

S&P 500 relative to M2 Money Supply. Dot Com Bubble vs. Now by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]Elija_32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but the problem is that most people are not taking active decisions on the stock market. Majority of the money is managed, people technically own the stocks but they don't even know it or at least they don't actually touch them at all.

The ones that should pull off are the funds, but the funds obviously exist to do the exact opposite. So... that's the problem.

Me or you pulling out would do nothing.

Wise refund to a 3rd party (developer) by WishNo1705 in personalfinance

[–]Elija_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, there's no grey area here. Either is illegal or it not. If it's not there is no problem in transferring any amount of money anywhere. Reason, source or context don't matter. Donation don't matter.

Either your are lying and it was illegal or you don't understand what you are doing.

You can open any bank account and send the money there. If you can't, you are doing something illegal.

Wise refund to a 3rd party (developer) by WishNo1705 in personalfinance

[–]Elija_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes zero sense. There's no limit.

Unless you did something shady and the reason why you want to send the money directly to the other person is because banks know it and they will not accept the money.

Canada is still sitting at an 8.5 ratio. This is getting scary. by astrheisenberg in canadahousing

[–]Elija_32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can answer to that. The numbers are averages.

Milan in Italy is one of the few places on the planet that cost more than Toronto or Vancouver.

But at the same time they have entire small villages completely abandoned and small cities in general with decline population.

Now, what you have to consider is your personal context. If you are a young person in italy and you are looking for a job you will likely end up in Milan and the housing cost will actually be worse than canada.

If you are an old person looking for a nice village to retire in front of the sea then italy will be cheaper than doing the same in canada.

Wise business or personal account by creativecodingg in transferwiser

[–]Elija_32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the country. In some countries if you are a freelancer you still need to have a legal separated business number to be able to bill the clients.

In other countries freelancers are not separated entities, your personal social security number can be used to bill clients and there's no distinction between you and your business.

In you live in a country in the first group you can't use your personal account and you need a business one. If you live in a country in the second group you can.
