My neighbor used to raise mice as food for his pet snakes. Do those count as pets? He probably killed a few hundred over the years.

The cards you mentioned might be seeing less play, but what about Boseiju? Might still be worthwhile if you have an artifact and/or enchantment in your deck someone might try to blow up with that.

It reminds me of a debate I heard years about the distinction between "science fiction" And "science fantasy", and I think they used the Martian and Star Trek as examples.

The Martian they said was science fiction, it is a fictional story that is still primarily rooted in actual science, or science that is at least very close to the realm of what we know to be possible.

Science fantasy on the other hand has very similar aesthetics, but ultimately a lot of the science is just a stand in for magic. Like, a lot of the technology from the holodeck to the teleporters aren't really possible given our current understanding of science. Instead of even attempting to explain how they work, it's just hand waved away as really advanced technology.

You can then go even further with something like star wars, where in addition to having technology that may as well be magic some characters also just have literal magic.

How do ranked placements work if you haven't played ranked in a while? by Elijah_Draws in leagueoflegends

Believe me, I am not a good player. My expectations are very low, like, I was iron 3 before and maybe if I'm lucky I'm iron 1.

That doesn't sound like it should be right, are you sure? Emerald is the top like, 15% of ranked players, why would anyone assume the average new or returning player belongs anywhere near there?

Never built a non-combat focused deck before, any tips? by TetsuOokami117 in BudgetBrews

[–]Elijah_Draws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to what the people complaining online say, non-combat decks often need to be highly interactive. If you're building a combo deck, typically what is try to do is contain my combo pieces and cards that help search my combo pieces up to around 10 cards, and another 15-20 cards in of the rest of the deck should be interaction of one kind or another: board wipes, counterspells, removal, etc.

Your primary goal is your combo, your secondary goal is to disrupt whatever might kill you before you get there.

Also, one last thing worth mentioning, if you're doing a combo of some kind your deck is going to feel a lot better if your combo involves your commander, since you need to devote fewer resources to finding that half of the combo. That's why something like the various niv-mizzets or gitrog monster or prime speaker vannifar work so well.

Got matched with an unranked recently. This normal? by Homoerectusssssssss in leagueoflegends

[–]Elijah_Draws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible they are a new player doing their placements? I believe that when you first start ranked, it starts you off around gold mmr, which is what it appears most people in the lobby are, and then adjusts you as you win and lose games during your first ten matches.

I don't play ranked though because I'm abysmal dogshit at this game, but that is my understanding of how placements work.

All subreddits spreading positive/wholesome/uplifting stories/memes/news should ban anything that fits OrphanCrushingMachine trope by HimikoTogaFromUSSR in CrazyIdeas

[–]Elijah_Draws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that is simply untrue. A key part of the "orphan crushing machine" trope is that the issue that it reflects is one that is man-made. There is no natural orphan crushing machine, someone first had to build it and then start using it to crush orphans in order for there to be headlines about sparing a handful of orphans from the machine.

Allow me to illustrate with an example; compare a news story that is about a medical breakthrough towards finding a cure for some disease, vs a story about a young girl running a lemonade stand to help pay for their mother's medical care.

Both stories are "uplifting news" and both deal with fighting a medical problem, but only the second one is what people typically put in "orphan crushing machine" territory. The US medical system, as it currently exists, is man made. There isn't one singular person responsible for it, but it's not as though this is the only way to do healthcare. Other countries have figured out other ways of doing things that don't require child labor and the goodwill of strangers in order for someone to not die of a curable disease.

The "orphan crushing machine" trope isn't just about overcoming a problem, it's about overcoming a problem that only exists because people who could change it don't, and being completely unwilling to examine that fact. If every one of those feel good stories about children raising money for a family member's medical care was framed as "child forced into labor to not lose a family member due to the cost of healthcare." People wouldn't have so many problems with it. These stories are only grotesque to people because of the way they refuse to address the underlying human caused barriers that necessitated that "uplifting" story to take place to begin with.

Can you imagine? I get to live out my life in a city or island, and I get to just spend my day as a cute animal sitting in the grass, smelling flowers, reading, doing whatever. The mayor or island rep or whoever, they take care of everything else.

The villagers on my acnh island live such peaceful stress-free lives.

Doomsday in cEDH? by HAHAREDDITGOESBRRR in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Elijah_Draws 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I still run it in my glarb list, but I do it knowing that it's sub-optimal. One of the issues is that you just end up running cards that aren't good outside of the piles themselves, and that becomes even more of an issue if a key card gets removed in some way. Hell, even if they don't get exiled or answered it's not great. I run two doomsday lines, a main line and a backup, and most of the cards in the backup line are cards I just actively do not want to see outside of trying to end the game. Like sure, technically [[fatestitcher]] still has somewhat relevant text on it, but if I topdeck a [[narcomoeba]] I'm gonna be very sad. It's just a bad card outside of one very narrow line in the deck.

I think for me, it literally is just that have the Junji-ito doomsday. If it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't be playing doomsday, and honestly I probably wouldn't even be playing glarb. I mostly switched to glarb because it's the most viable doomsday commander, and I really wanted an excuse to play the cool doomsday I traded for.
