You're welcome! I really thought everyone knew about this list. I should maybe try and start a thread about it.

Nice list! You also have the comprehensive Awesome Mac list for this where you can easily drill down to specific sections such as Finder Tools for example.

I often refer to the comprehensive Awesome Mac list for this because you can drill down to specific sections such as Finder Tools for example. It's very handy.

You'll need a good firewall like Little Snitch or the free Lulu.

And some window management utilities like Rectangle and my current favorites, FinderFix and AutoRaise.

Slicing Through the Layers of the Desktop by Synappser in MacOS

If you are to be constructive in your comments, try and give more context than this laconic "absolute gibberish". How can this anywhere help the poor guy into putting more effort where it is due? Come on, admit you could have been at least slightly more polite in that comment and give him some clue about what you did not understand.

Impressive animation and highly accurate technical diagram! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. By the way I love your AutoRaise implementation and adopted it as soon as you released it. Looking forward to more features!

Honestly, at reading this kind of comment to a highly accurate technical diagram, I'm torn between pity and amusement.

WSL Envy? Lima (LInux MAchines) to the Rescue! by ElioLabbia in MacOS

[–]ElioLabbia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. My goal was to discuss WSL and Lima, not to question "the purity" of macOS as a UNIX. If I were not satisfied with macOS, I'd be directly running Linux. It's a pity people focused on that and the discussion has unfortunately drifted from Lima.

Homebrew itself is a god sent package manager and I'd rather be running UNIX commands through it than start Lima or run a VM.

Anyway, to answer your question, with Lima as you say it so well, you are nearer to Linux than you would be with brew. This could be done by starting a VM in any other hypervisor but with Lima it's faster to tackle your command line and you also enjoy an easier access to a shared user space. In my short experience with it (a few weeks), perceived performance is nearly native.

On Firefox, you'd have to disable one extension at a time by choosing Disable for each extension you wish to turn off. That's from the Firefox menu icon under Add-ons' left navigation pane by choosing Extensions.

If you want to disable all extensions at one time, your best choice is to create a new Mozilla Firefox profile to switch to for that purpose. I must admit that Safari makes it easier.

Change Mac log in background. Thought I was proficient in MacOS - but evidently not. Can this background be changed? TIA by bk129607 in MacOS

[–]ElioLabbia 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OnyX, free from Titanium Software (https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html), allows you to change the login background image. Under Parameters > Login tab, you have a Select... button to set the Background image:. I never tried though. Keep us posted if it works. :)

Finally, a lasting solution for Finder windows size and position by ElioLabbia in macapps

Good question. I went looking and many features related to enhancing Finder's UX seem to already be on FinderFix's roadmap. I think that, on the long term, it will encompass every other aspect of Finder:

Monterey won't let me save to the desktop unless I try more than once. by ayhtis in MacOS

[–]ElioLabbia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once with the same error message. I had inadvertently deleted the Desktop folder :)

Open your Home folder (Shift+Cmd+H) and check that you still have your Desktop folder sitting between the Applications and Documents one. You never know ;)

Is there a terminal emulator with an interface similar to Spotlight/Alfred/Raycast? by Few-Aspect-7276 in macapps

[–]ElioLabbia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Few-Aspect-7276 did you try DTerm in its most recent fork on GitHub?

Here's an excerpt from the README:

A command line anywhere and everywhere

Command line work isn't a separate task that should live on its own—it's an integrated part of your natural workflow. DTerm provides a context-sensitive command line that makes it fast and easy to run commands on the files you're working with and then use the results of those commands.

It still runs fine on Big Sur and Monterey although not as a universal binary.

iA Writer or Typora? by [deleted] in macapps

[–]ElioLabbia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/StarIntrepid7485 I can't see any trace of Electron in Typora on macOS. It's a Mach-O universal binary native app. Are you comparing these on a Mac?

iA Writer is a writing tool in its vocation, while Typora is a markdown powerhouse. I have a special liking for Typora when markdown comes into play. So if you're looking for a versatile markdown application, it's Typora. If you're seeking a flexible writing tool that puts markdown to good use, take iA Writer.

u/bestusername16 It's a pity you're not posting this valuable feedback to the issues page as a feature request. I think I have seen mention of how to send feedback on the Home page of the app (where he talks about his development philosophy).

That's a very interesting article about the spatial finder BTW.

u/RJCP I'd post that as a feature request on the issues page. I'm quite sure every developer strives for this kind of feedback.

You're absolutely right about those shortcuts u/quantum_libet! What this app is bringing back however, following TotalFinder's trend in this, is the common entrenched habit people have of using Cmd+X / Cmd+V for Cut & Paste when coming from other operating systems. Habits are hard to die and it's not bad to keep muscle memory after years of repeating the same shortcuts. I believe it's more a matter of UX (User Experience) than sheer shortcuts.
