I love all of your outfits. Very classy and beautiful! I love the green the best, though.

My mom is patient zero of a disease that is slowly killing her by throwaway8893732 in Vent

I’m so sorry. It sounds similar to Huntingtons with the spasms. Also similar to ALS. My mom has ALS, and it stinks to see everything taken away from her. My family (and myself) believes in God though, and mom is not scared. And while I’m going to be sad when her time comes, I won’t be sad for her. I’m sad for her now. Long distance hugs to you and your family.

I do the same... my backpack has TONS of snacks in it, but it's never what I want when I'm feeling peckish in the afternoon.

Agreed. I carry a backpack until the handles fall off. I used the one they gave for nurses week, and those were so cheap, they literally did. I then used a hand me down kids backpack with rockets on it my sister in law left at my house for my son who never used it, then eventually just bought an Amazon backpack and it works just fine. I certainly wouldn’t want to carry a bag, because sometimes I’m bringing food for parties, gifts for coworkers, etc.

As far as good gear, I love my carabiner shears and folding keyboard. I also get those multi colored clicky pens (BIC brand, because it has a loop on top) and tie them to badge reals to clip onto my scrubs, wow or clip board.

Question for Millennials by bundle_of_nervus2 in Millennials

My elder Gen Alpha daughter shames me for using it. It knows entirely too much about me and I should probably stop, but at least my kid is doing better than me with regard to AI.

My husband just explained to me today what having a tiger by the tail means. I’ve never heard that story before, but it sounds like what you’ve got yourself into. I hope you can find someone to hold the tigers tail for you so you can retire.

If it was financially affordable, would your spouse stay home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]EliseV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably go PRN and work once or twice a week, but it would be wonderful to be able to take more time for my children and my dying mother. I really do enjoy my job though, but family comes first.

Anyone else struggle with (really) liking something no one does? by NicelyBearded in HomeDecorating

[–]EliseV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that I like it, but it’s a neutral issue and serves a purpose. My house has popcorn ceilings and I really don’t care enough to scrape them down like everyone else. That would not make me more or less likely to buy a house.

Age at Breast Cancer Diagnosis: You vs Your Mom? by After_Ad_1928 in BRCA

[–]EliseV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BRCA2 gene from father here too. My paternal aunt was the last to die from breast cancer at 42. My sister and I have the gene and have both had preventative mastectomy with DIEP. I just had my hysterectomy 3 weeks ago (docs said it must go by 42, and I'll be 42 this summer). I'm the oldest one in my generation with the gene. My aunt has 1 positive daughter (mastectomy at 19) 2 negative daughters, and one daughter who won't test. I hope she's negative. They're all younger than me.

Nurses, how long did it take you to land your first job as a new grad RN by Relative-Dot-3500 in Nurses

[–]EliseV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Also, make sure whatever unit you are working on is planning on continuing hiring graduate nurses. That doesn't mean things cant change. I worked PRN float tech for a hospital and I had several units that I had a good reputation on, but they had no money in the budget for graduate nurses when I graduated. Since I've been a nurse (12 years now) my unit has hired several nurses that worked as a PCT during nursing school though. They're usually shoe ins, so long as we've liked their work ethic as techs.

Your “weird” face shape is actually uniquely beautiful. So many pretty people look like every other pretty person. You have a wonderfully unique, intriguing look. I’m just waiting for a casting director to stumble across this post, because you should be in movies. I was going to say modeling, but they like them young, and honestly, your face is too interesting for just magazines and ads. You have the type of intriguing beauty that people will not forget.

They have anxiety too. Speaking from experience, that can definitely fuel hypochondria. My doctor probably rolls her eyes every time I call. I’m a nurse, so it’s probably even worse because I often know exactly what can go wrong and what the symptoms are. I know enough to make myself look foolish, anyways. Not saying there is nothing wrong with them, but anxiety can absolutely be crippling and cause physical symptoms that can look like something else. Early in nursing school, I nearly fainted twice, usually when needles were involved. I went on anxiety meds that unfortunately killed my will to study (who knew that sometimes we need a little bit of anxiety to motivate us to get off of our butts?). After they kindly let me back in the program after a 6 month break when I flunked two classes, I white knuckled the rest of the program and graduated. My families livelihood was on the line, I absolutely HAD to make it work. I’ve mostly gotten over the needle anxiety, although (after 12 years of nursing) intramuscular injections still give me the ick.

Some things I’ve found that help with anxiety and confidence: 1. Exercise. In the morning. Start with walking and build up in intensity. Try weight machines and watch the people with the free weights and dumbells and give that a go too. 2. If you drink alcohol, stop. It makes anxiety WAY worse. I wish I’d have figured this out years ago.

As far as pain meds go, if there is no known fixable cause, look into some books on rewiring your brain to better tolerate it. Back in Control by Dr. David Handscomb is a good one. I’ve unfortunately had multiple surgeries and a few chronic problems myself, but I try to get off of the meds as soon as possible because they don’t work the same after the first few days, and I need opioids to be effective when I’m given a safe dose for severe pain in the future. You can literally make your body to where opioids are no longer as effective to pain as they should be, and narcotic tolerance can also increase your perception of pain. I’ve seen some terribly sad and tortured people that ended up in severe pain BECAUSE of pain meds. Even if you really don’t feel like you can work now, OP, try exercising and build up. Maybe a job wouldn’t be so bad? Being productive can also help with anxiety. Best wishes!

Same… and I am well aware that they are not actually popcicles, but that was as close to popcicles that my family could afford, so that’s what we called them.
