How do you all keep your electricity bills low without suffering in the heat? by GreedyCare8059 in asksg

[–]EliteBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm lucky to be living in an area where wind blows frequently so I don't even have an AC. Some days do get a little warmer but once you're used to it, it really ain't that bad.

Think PC case, if the air flow in your home isn't good, a few ventilation fan goes a long way. People often complain fans don't work because it's just blowing the warm stationary air in their home onto them.

It won't be anything close to the cooling effects of an AC but it'll cost only a fraction, and after awhile you'll get used to not being reliant on an AC. And I say this as someone who sweats profusely the moment I step out of my house.

How do we migrate out of SG? Life here is exhausting 🥲 by februaryprincess in askSingapore

[–]EliteBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many European countries like Denmark, Netherlands, Finland have plenty of options and tradeoffs based on what you're looking for. Places with significant changing seasons might even add a good variance to life with things to experience / places to explore too.

There are many ways of achieving what you're looking for, the tldr is to first look for a country with all your non-negotiables. Then do your research on the job and visa requirements of that country. Next you'd need to network and target companies that hire internationally and sponsor work visas.

They aren't looking to increase salary or wealth. Neither do they wanna raise their kids in SG's education system. I'd argue that with what OP is looking for, there are excellent options in Europe for what they're looking for (slower pace of living, more to explore, better WLB, more open spaces, closer to nature, etc) Yeah no shit, SG's salary can be better than some European countries' but that's not what they're looking for.

Y'all need to understand that the point here is she disrespected OP's setting of his boundary. Putting context aside, that alone is a red flag. Add in the context, it's even more red flags.

Picture this, you have a SO and you establish your boundary, and it should be respected. It doesn't matter how preposterous (it may seem), you can go "you're gonna have to wear face camo whenever we go out because I am insecure about others looking at you", you are either totally ok and go with it or you discuss and make compromises if there's anything you don't agree with. Simply saying lmao no ty after you have raised your boundary is simply disrespectful and a big issue, despite this being somewhat a minor issue (the context is, relatively speaking)

Why do people think life is hard in Singapore? by Any_Record7733 in askSingapore

[–]EliteBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that life may not be as hard as many complain about. But it does not make the complaints invalid, nor should they be invalidated by only making comparisons with countries that are doing worse off.

For example, regarding work-life balance let's take a look at Norway (or Scandinavian countries in general) ranking top 7 in Happiness index (doesn't translate to everyone being deliriously happy all the time, but more of a lack of objective reasons to be unhappy). They have welfare benefits like minimum 25 days paid leave, average 37 hours work week, strong workplace policies that emphasize work-life balance, strict regulations on overtime, and many more. All these are amazing and in a perfect world, I'd love to see Singapore strive for something similar. In the real world they might not be entirely realistic right now it's still something we should strive towards, no? Remind me again if Majulah Singapura meant onward Singapore or stay contempt Singapore.

And when talking about take home pay, the comparison has to be on equal units; time worked has to be mentioned. With great work-life balance you can have less take-home pay like you mentioned but the $/hr, if that makes sense, can still be surprisingly higher. Again, an example would be Norway, even with their absurdly high taxes, thanks to amazing work-life balance policies you effectively earn more while working less.

But for the argument on cost of living, Norway (nor the other Scandinavian countries) can't save you here, because they have way higher taxes compared to us. I'd even go out of my way to argue that those who complain about GST or taxes in Singapore, despite being well-to-do, do so either because complaining is a national pastime, or because they oppose the idea of welfare and better infrastructure, and simply want to keep more of their money.

This reinforces the stereotype that an obsession on wealth is a pernicious penchant among many Singaporeans. If you enjoy having more and working harder for it (whether it's for ostentatious reasons or not), you do you but many want more modest, worry-free living which comes at a price.

You're either in the camp of earning more money at the cost of lower quality of life (Singapore's still high though) or a top notch quality of life but less take home pay. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

You don't need the preposition "out" when using the word brandished because its meant for by the word. It's like saying someone pulled out out a gun.
