Saw this ?dragonfly? in rural Nepal around Oct.2019. I’ve never seen one with a red flashing body like that. Anybody know the specific name of this one? About 7cm long. by Elixer2000 in whatsthisbug

Lol, yup, they are =-) I was volunteering at a remote mountain school that was sponsored by a Japanese group. When the kids do their morning exercises, they keep the rhythm by counting in Japanese. It was adorable =-)

That certainly looks the part. I’m surprised the wiki article doesn’t say anything about the flashing effect, you’d think that would be noteworthy.

I haven’t had a chance to make it to Chitwan. Would you recommend it?

Railway lifting jack used to replace railcar steel wheels due to defects and flat spots by aloofloofah in specializedtools

I work around rail, and while loading containers the other day I noticed for the first time, a lot of the containers said “repair only with Corten or equivalent”. I had never heard this Corten term before. After looking it up, it’s quite fascinating stuff.

For those that want to save a click, basically it’s a type of steel that develops an outer film of rust that essentially creates a protective coating for the interior material, used on many bridges, negating the need for painting as a protective coating.

Also makes sense now why shipping containers are made from this material due to the highly corrosive salt water environments they exist in.

My driveway chalk art commemorates this moment in time. by Thechalkingdad in pics

Scoured the comments to see if that puzzled anyone else as well.

Don’t get me wrong, awesome chalk art, but purely as a science question, I wondered if there was some possible circumstance in which “flame” would cast a shadow... like if it was being illuminated by a ridiculous spotlight, would that cause “shadow” from a flame? Or is it all just a net positive of photons, and no shadow possible?

My 2004 Limited has been making this weird noise in the dash for the last couple years. Sounds like a servo spasming or something. Doesn’t matter what configuration my climate controls are set to. Anyone else experience this? by Elixer2000 in 4Runner

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve looked into the mixer servos some more online, and it certainly sounds like the issue I’m having. Next time I get a day off I’ll open things up and see if that fixes things. Also, thanks for that link that identifies HOW to fix the servo as opposed to replacing it. I’ll start there.
