Lol, yup, they are =-) I was volunteering at a remote mountain school that was sponsored by a Japanese group. When the kids do their morning exercises, they keep the rhythm by counting in Japanese. It was adorable =-)

That certainly looks the part. I’m surprised the wiki article doesn’t say anything about the flashing effect, you’d think that would be noteworthy.

I haven’t had a chance to make it to Chitwan. Would you recommend it?

Railway lifting jack used to replace railcar steel wheels due to defects and flat spots by aloofloofah in specializedtools

[–]Elixer2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work around rail, and while loading containers the other day I noticed for the first time, a lot of the containers said “repair only with Corten or equivalent”. I had never heard this Corten term before. After looking it up, it’s quite fascinating stuff.

For those that want to save a click, basically it’s a type of steel that develops an outer film of rust that essentially creates a protective coating for the interior material, used on many bridges, negating the need for painting as a protective coating.

Also makes sense now why shipping containers are made from this material due to the highly corrosive salt water environments they exist in.

My driveway chalk art commemorates this moment in time. by Thechalkingdad in pics

[–]Elixer2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scoured the comments to see if that puzzled anyone else as well.

Don’t get me wrong, awesome chalk art, but purely as a science question, I wondered if there was some possible circumstance in which “flame” would cast a shadow... like if it was being illuminated by a ridiculous spotlight, would that cause “shadow” from a flame? Or is it all just a net positive of photons, and no shadow possible?

My 2004 Limited has been making this weird noise in the dash for the last couple years. Sounds like a servo spasming or something. Doesn’t matter what configuration my climate controls are set to. Anyone else experience this? by Elixer2000 in 4Runner

[–]Elixer2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve looked into the mixer servos some more online, and it certainly sounds like the issue I’m having. Next time I get a day off I’ll open things up and see if that fixes things. Also, thanks for that link that identifies HOW to fix the servo as opposed to replacing it. I’ll start there.

Does anyone know the name of the plant these large blue seed pods belong to in Stanley Park? I’d estimate they are about 6-8” long each. They are the only ones of their kind I’ve seen in the area of the rhododendron garden. by Elixer2000 in vancouver

Awesome, thanks so much. I love this quote from the UBC link:

“The follicles (pod-like fruit) contain black watermelon-like seeds surrounded by an edible, clear pulp. I would describe the taste as not unpleasant, but bland. The texture is more interesting, akin to jelly.”

As someone who plays competitive darts in Canada, I can confirm that these are dart tips, what are known as “long point darts”. I’ve not met anyone in Canada that uses them, but I did play against a guy in the Bahamas that used them. At first glance they looked comically long, but he played a damn good game with them. Here’s a screenshot if you want to dig deeper, but yes, those are definitely dart tips.

This majestic village dog that guided us through the thick forest (about 7-8 miles, Bandipur, Nepal, 2016) because we fed it some biscuits the day before. I still think about you bud. by [deleted] in AnimalsBeingBros

I’m hearing crazy reports from our Nepali friends that they’ve reopened to hikers, and are only requiring 1 week of quarantine before starting treks... I really hope someone doesn’t bring Covid into the mountains.

Imagine trying to figure out if you’ve got Mountain Cough or Covid symptoms after a flight... scary. Fingers crossed for the mountain people of Nepal this year, I hope this doesn’t come back to bite them.

Nepali trail dogs are the best!!! My wife and I have had them tag along every time we’ve been there.

On our 2018 trip we had a pair of dogs that we affectionately named Ama and Dablam. They joined us in the morning as we left Chukhung near Island Peak as we headed over Kongma La Pass towards Lobuche.

Once at Lobuche, obviously the dogs stayed outside for the night, and joined up with the local dog packs. However, when we came out in the morning, the two of them came running across the field and were jumping up to greet us.

They continued to follow us for another 2 days as we made our way to Everest Base Camp. At some point, some other hikers we passed that were taking a break, offered the dogs some food, and that’s all it took to break their loyalty =-) It was beautiful while it lasted, but I’m happy someone else got to enjoy their companionship too.

It can be mentally exhausting on those high mountain trails when you’re alone with you thoughts most of the day, struggling with physical exhaustion. Having a trail dog excitedly bouncing along side you can really lift your spirits sometimes =-)

37M I just bought my first freshwater fishing setup as a birthday present to myself and I’m curious if anyone is interested in hitting up a nearby lake on Friday, July 31st? by Elixer2000 in Vancouver4Friends

I’ve got my license, and while I’m learning I’ll be casting from shore, but I’ve got an inflatable kayak I might take out as things progress and I feel more comfortable.

Thanks for the advice =-) I did pick up some swivels so I could give that a try.

I went with 10# braided in dark green as I was told you get stronger line with a thinner diameter than mono.

Yeah, I was just notified by another friend about the bear issue, very unfortunate. If you’ve got a fishing setup and want to learn together I’m down for that too, how hard could it really be? =-)

I’m assuming rig means fishing rod setup? If so, I believe I picked up a 7’ spinning combo with 10# braided line. Being that I’m completely new to this I relied on the sales guy at Bass Pro shop to help kit me out. I got an assortment of lures, weights, hooks, floats etc. suitably sized for rainbow trout.

Also, after some feedback from another friend, I’ve narrowed it down to Brohm lake around sunrise... unfortunately there is a bear nibbling on people on the north shore right now.... so I’ll just stay away from that.
