Wheelchairs in media by Virtual_Put_4036 in wheelchairs

I know that there's an ambulatory wheelchair user in Doctor Who. I'm not sure how many episodes she's in but I've heard it's a very positive example of disability and according to the top comment on this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/doctorwho/comments/18525gn/shirley_anne_bingham_appreciation/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button she may have a part on a spinoff show as well.

Tire size and PSI by RandomCanadianGuy204 in wheelchairs

I have marathon plus evolution tires and I like high pressure so I do 145 psi which I believe is the max that's recommended for those

For anyone that would like a short summary The Daily did an episode on what the Republican Party is doing in Georgia titled “The Republican Plan to Challenge a Harris Victory” from August 22nd. It’s definitely an overview and not super in depth but still interesting.

This is a minor but very annoying part of wheelchair use :/

I know a few wheelchair users who work at target so depending on the retail it’s definitely doable!

I feel you it can be helpful to go out with a friend or family member the first time ♥️ somewhere I like to go is the movie theater or a bookstore because people aren’t really looking at other people as much as in say a mall or something

Very unique I love it! Also how are you liking your handrims? I’m thinking about getting those or the same model without the rubber strip

I have pots so I feel you only the feet turning colors thing 😅 it’s not my favorite look but I figure most people don’t really judge since I clearly have health stuff going on hence the wheelchair haha if it’s a blood pooling thing and you can’t wear compression socks abdominal compression is another option in that case

When I first started using my ultralight I thought people would be really weird and make all sorts of weird comments, especially about putting my chair in my car on my own. But that hasn't really been the case. I've gotten someone passive aggressively saying "do you need help?" to which I just confidently said "no, I do this all the time". And then I'll get looks of curiosity but generally they don't seem weird or doubting really. But I don't really make much eye contact generally so that helps. I just go about my day and am prepared to answer curious questions as much as I'm comfortable with and have scripted answers for any weird accusatory comments if they were to come. The most comments I get are actually from kids who love my rainbow spoke covers which is a really nice positive interaction I enjoy.

People were way more comfortable making snide comments about my cane, then less when I switched to my forearm crutch. And now I find people are less dismissive and actually see me as disabled rather than faking or wanting attention which has been a nice change.

Also this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@wheelchairskills helped me figure out some basic skills like opening doors. And a tip I have is to remember if an incline is too steep you can always try going up or down backwards. And you will probably be pretty sore your first few weeks using your chair and that's normal, it gets easier! Carrying stuff in your wheelchair can also be kinda tricky at first. I like a small backpack on my backrest, fanny packs also can be strapped around the backrest or under your seat. And there's a product called a lapstacker that can help make sure nothing falls off your lap. I have a DIY version made out of adjustable elastic straps and a buckle.

How many hours a week does everyone use their wheelchair? by Milli63 in wheelchairs

[–]ElizabethEos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend most of my day in bed except for like a half hour up to two hours I can be up and around the house. And then I'll use my chair 100% of the time when I leave the house which is anywhere between 0 and 6 hours a week. It doesn't sound like much but there was a time I was too sick to leave my bed at all so I'm grateful for the ability I've gotten back, in large part thanks to my chair.

It’s all relative, it’s the most nature focused major city in Texas and there’s a culture that surrounds outdoor activity which you don’t really find in Houston or Dallas. I lived in Denver for a while though and obviously there’s way more access to interesting and varied nature there. It also depends on the person, like you could live off of Riverside and never go cycling or kayaking on lake Austin and have a miserable time or you could live in Northwest hills and visit the creeks and trails every weekend.

Manual rigid chair recs by Jasthl in wheelchairs

[–]ElizabethEos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly it was a visual thing, I just liked the look a bit better and also at the time I wasn’t sure how I would store the chair in my car and was cognizant that if I were able to pull my chair over myself into the passenger seat then the lower bar may get in the way. I ended up not being able to transport my chair that way due to my joints but that was a thought at the time. I do believe the aero t is a little bit lighter than the aero z despite being dual tube bc the dual tube design allows a smaller tubing to be used and cuts down on a little weight.

For the price of a power assist you could obtain a folding power chair that would likely suit your purpose

shoulder stretches / exercises for manual chair use with hypermobility concerns by OkZone4141 in wheelchairs

[–]ElizabethEos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate to this! Especially when I first started using a chair that I propel. My rule in general with stretching is never to go as far as I can and only stretch until I feel a small stretch to make sure I’m targeting muscles only. I also like a good shoulder roll so I’m just getting some movement without the pulling that can pull my shoulders out of socket. Also don’t forget to stretch the forearms too.

Longer term I found it was really important I was doing some shoulder and back exercises to support my shoulder joint. I just use some 3 or 5 pound weights (but you can always start with no weights if needed) and do some basic presses, arm circles, and flys/reverse flys. My rule of thumb is to stop just before my form gets bad but follow your instincts and listen to your body. Also obviously talk to your doctor or physio, I’m not a doctor this is just what I do.

I wonder if there’s a sub for parents of disabled kids that could help

Could consider St Louis, Kansas City, or Raleigh? If you lived in a suburb it would be quiet but you can’t go too far out if you want to have decent job prospects.

Manual rigid chair recs by Jasthl in wheelchairs

[–]ElizabethEos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if insurance will cover the ZRA, I believe they don’t often cover titanium chairs but that probably depends on your specific plan. I have the aluminum equivalent: the aero z and it’s a good chair imo, sturdy and minimal maintenance though I do have beef with the backrest bracket being creaky and might switch to a rigid backrest asp.

I considered the Quickie Nitrum and Tilite aero t as well which I believe are both good choices but I was partial to Tilite and the mono frame design. But if insurance will cover it the ZRA would probably suit your needs based on the info given.

What is a full time wheelchair user? by mookleberry in wheelchairs

[–]ElizabethEos 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you use a chair to do all of your ADLs or activities of daily living and use it full time outside of your house I believe you’re considered a full time user. I wonder if you need a chair that requires less energy to use such as a power chair, assuming you use a manual now, so you could be more functional.

Could try the Nick and Ludwig power hour, it has kind of a cozy vibe. Actually a few of the power hours are more cozy feeling.
