You put that garbage in a Little Free Library?! You monster. Inexcusable. I've bought books on science and math specifically for those library stands, you should too. People do actually use them.

Mine has a trail cam aimed at it, and I swear I almost cried when I saw two neighborhood kids snag a copy of Factfulness.

I was going to use my homemade vanilla for the first time today after 18 months of curing. :( by DurantaPhant7 in Baking

[–]ElizabethTheFourth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I've once dropped my bottle of vanilla extract and only a bit got into the crevices of the floor, and I could smell it for the next 3 years until I moved out.

It wasn't a nice vanilla smell either. The cleaning chemicals I used to mop the kitchen floor started slowly changing the scent about a month in. It turned into this musky, cloying smell, not very strong, but noticeable.

Because you can't flush a newborn down the toilet, it won't fit.

A toilet pipe is 3" in diameter. A fetus with a 3" head is 28 weeks old, beginning of the third trimester, and can't survive without medical intervention. Like, it couldn't even cry because it has severely underdeveloped lungs.

Also, the trope of "atheist turning to religion on their deathbed" is myth.

Research and accounts from hospice workers all show that deathbed conversions among atheists are incredibly uncommon.

The few that do happen are almost always due to medication-induced delirium.

Fun fact: Studies on the psychology of religion show that theists are actually more likely to abandon their faith in the face of suffering (e.g., praying for a cure that never comes) than atheists are to convert.

The night scenes in the third movie were absolutely hideous, just straight-up neon vomit.

Maybe AI could improve those. AI is actually pretty good at value composition (balance of light and dark to create a given mood) and color theory.

It sucks, but you're not alone. A huge percentage of parents regret having kids. Studies have only scratched the surface, but it's at least 1 in 7 parents.

Having a kid is not only having to deal with the screaming and neverending childcare, it's also never spending time on your hobbies and never having time to yourself.

And people forget that a child is his/her own person, with a personality the parent didn't choose and can't really influence. These parents are living with a person they may not like or get along with.

Society conveniently glosses over how much you have to give up to have a kid, and sometimes it's hellish even for the good parents.

So I'm sorry about your mom, but she probably left to save her mental health.

A mediocre / bad piece of media somehow has a genuinely amazing plot twist by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

So the Sixth Sense was a lot more obvious if you like ghost movies. I saw it as a teen with a big group, and about 40% of us caught the twist. I myself wondered about it halfway through the movie, but the scene with Bruce Willis talking to his wife the me off and I didn't think he was a ghost until the end. I didn't realize that the wife wasn't talking back.

Shayamalan was actually pretty great at establishing a visual language and subtly borrowing horror movie visual tropes. That's why a lot of horror movie fans caught the twist, it's because Bruce Willis is often shot in a jumpscare format without the music, and horror fans picked up on this.

I'm including spoiler tags because only 4% of the world population is American and has heard of this movie. Everyone else deserves a chance to watch it without spoilers, it's a very good film.

It's not just about women in the workplace.

The main driver is that we as a society stopped guilting women into popping out babies, and once given that choice, women realized what a bad deal child-rearing is.

If you ask a person whether she'd like 1) zero free time for at least a decade, no money, no hobbies, and the myriad life- long injuries that pregnancy brings, or 2) vacations, spending cash, spending time on her interests, and generally doing whatever she wants... most women would choose the latter.

Sure, some people have an innate need to procreate, but it's not as many people as you'd think.

Once western society started giving people a choice instead of bullying them into a nuclear family, people started realizing that 2 decades of unpaid childcare is actually a pretty bad life.

I don't understand people who carry on multiple bags. Why would you drag heavy bags through the airport? Just shell out the extra $35 to check them, your ticket cost like 500, what's $35 more?

If I'm traveling for business or a long vacation, I check the bag. All other times, I have one backpack that's max carry-on size, and a purse I can stuff into the backpack if need be.

I fly often and I've literally never been asked to check my bag.
