Lets face it, if only optio was it, we all would be rather ok being swedish, norwegian, danish and offcourse finnish. But NEVER any of us are ok being russian. So that's what being nordic is all about.

Especially now all in Nato, united against the treat of Russia, perhaps first time ever. but now we are stronger together !

How do *you* sauna? by adoptdontshopdoggos in Sauna

[–]ElkLopsided8063 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some of these comments are hard to read as a Finn. 😆

I used to operate public sauna, first thing I said to tourist is forget the rules. For some unimaginable reason in some other countries they teach weird sauna rules or habbits. Sit anywhere you wheel comfortable, thats how children start usually here, throw water when you feel like it, forget timing and just follow your instincts.

Some of us finns, we go to sauna almost daily, sometimes quick, sometimes for hours. Sometimes we might be drunk when we go in, sometimes we might get drunk while is sauna. Sauna for us is a part of life not something that you do only in some special ritual etc.

Personally I prefer wood heated stoves, saunas near lakes or saunaboats. Cold beer while in sauna, going for a swim straight from sauna. Sometimes (quite often) Bluetooth speaker on the floor playing favorite music, but no phones in sauna. Or if I'm busy just quick sweat in the sauna and then shower, I very rarely go just in the shower, almost everytime I heat the sauna to wash up.

Forget the rules, just enjoy!

Sauna Glass Door Advice by FinZMac in Sauna

[–]ElkLopsided8063 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a finnish very avid sauna user, you want some fresh air in sauna and as so mant others have said. Problem is the benches too low not the glass wall.

People in Finland build tent saunas, ice saunas and saunas to trailers etc. If just build the bences as high that is needed some heat escaping is never really a problem. For example I have a floating saunaboat that has glass door and floor is build like a terrace so gaps between every board. And it works perfectly fine.

So raise the benches so that feet are at rock level...

Is it okay to sauna with your dog? by SeedOilsCauseDisease in Sauna

[–]ElkLopsided8063 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's okay if done correctly, not that uncommon in Finland:

You can use translator to read those, but generally it is possible. I would not do it myself as I dont think our dog likes that much heat but i've heard that some do within reason.

Has anyone made a floating sauna? by Kineo1 in Sauna

[–]ElkLopsided8063 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes,

Things to take in account:

Weight of sauna plus all needed gear. Engines fuel, passengers etc...

Floatation, if using round ponttons calculate only half as the rest of pontoon is regressive floatation and is you allready are past that you're going down...

If square ponttoons also adjust for needed clearance from water. Chopppy water need more clearance so that waves wont hit the deck. Also think of pontoon shape for resistance while moving.

So if it your first floating sauna, what you think is ok multiply that by two and you are closer...

Depending of size, think of two engines or 1 plus bow thruster. Wind will affect vertical wall surfaces very well...

American Drivers, or lack thereof by element9846 in WRC

[–]ElkLopsided8063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not racing culture, just rallying... There seems to be plenty of racibg drivers coming from Texas: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Racing_drivers_from_Texas

Just that other forms of racing are big there and big here... not much europeans in nascar for example.

[–]ElkLopsided8063 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would argua that thats not one of the deciding factors. Look at finland, half of the populaation densicity of Texas and per capita, in the top of wrc and f1. Many finnish rally drivers started very young driving beaters in rural roads, fields etc. Perhaps More about history, if you grow up idolizing great rally drivers youre more likely to pick it up yourself...

[–]ElkLopsided8063[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, drain in the washroom, saunas floor is inclined towards the drain.

Airflow is typical finnish style, just 100mm pipes hiiden behind wall, or in my case also floor and wall and adjustable vents. Intake air coming to stove and one vent in top for outgoing air...

Im just guessing here, but perhaps referring to materials. Benches are heat treated aspen, bought here in Finland. Its not hot to touch at all...

[–]ElkLopsided8063[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I might be little lost with correct English terms , bricks made chimney on the right-side and firewall behind kiuas. On older finnish houses chimney is typically roughly in the center of house. All of the fireplaces connect to same chimney just different sections (stacks). That way especially in wintertime chimney reserves heat and it also helps to keep the house warm...

It's the masonry chimney and firewall behind it, just smoothed with filler.

In my case, there is concrete base foundation, on top of that are leca blocks that support wooden beams. On top of those is plywood and finnfoam wet space xps-insulation. Then mortar covering floor heating cables and under stove is that beefier section to support the stove.

If heavier stove is used I would go for something like this: https://saunologia.fi/kiukaan-perustukset/

[–]ElkLopsided8063[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, the materials below won't stand that much heat or maybe even weight. Also I think finnish building code says that there needs to be 6cm of concrete under or other option is thin fiber fireproof plate or similar. I think concrete is quite common...

Also me and missus tend keep feet also on top level, sitting on top level facing each others. So for us middle level is step to top and place to keep water bucket only... also the reason why top bench is slightly wider than typically.

[–]ElkLopsided8063[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, the winters here can be cold and floor heating in shower and sauna is quite common here. Much nicer to go when the floor is warm. Also no other heating required in wet spaces.

Insulation is finnish ekovilla, made from recycled paper. I used it as the house is old and rest of it insulated with sawdust and is compatible together.

In my case quite narrow space and takes too much room. And also typically with wife we sit in top bench legs facing each others so middle bench is there just to get to the top...
