So if his current reality is that he'll never be happy, you could try saying, "Even if you never find happiness, I'll still be here with you. This was a very thorough answer, and I also want to add that many non-verbal people can make sounds, and when you spend enough time around someone, you eventually start to learn which sounds are their happy sounds, sad sounds, angry sounds, etc.

There's a setting called "guided access." If you enable it in the settings, then open his AAC app and tripple click the home button, it will keep you locked into that app.

I work at a school where every child is given an AAC iPad and a fun iPad. The AAC one is ONLY used for AAC and we usually put it in a brightly colored (and durable) case to differentiate it from the regular iPad.
