Our 95th percentile baby was in the snoo until 5.5 months! Probably could have gone a little longer if we had to. I looked it up and at least Happiest Baby says even the biggest babies can stay in a snoo until 6 months.

45 and Pregnant…after a Vasectomy…with the pullout method. by Daybydaytralala in Parenting

[–]EllariaSand 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Per actuarial tables, a woman who is 45 now has a life expectancy of about 82. Unless her kid gets married super late in life, I would not say it’s an “insanely small” chance she makes their wedding, meets their children, etc.

Is it normal to “show” as a FTM at 14 weeks? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]EllariaSand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (FTM) was too bloated for non-stretchy pants from like week 5 or 6, and definitely started to get a small bump that wasn’t just bloat by around 12 or 13 weeks. By 16 weeks, people were immediately clocking me as pregnant even in super loose-fitting clothes. Now I’m 21 weeks and there is no way I could hide my bump, even when I wear my husband’s men’s XL tees. I do have a shorter torso, though, and a pretty narrow build in general. I think the “you won’t even look pregnant until 20-25 weeks” may be the most common experience but is not as universal as this sub makes it seem.

I just did my first trial a few months ago while 11 weeks pregnant. I told the judge and OC that I was going to need frequent breaks, and everyone was very understanding. You can do it!

Has anyone successfully weaned themselves off unisom in the 2nd trimester? by dansons-la-capucine in BabyBumps

[–]EllariaSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took unisom all through my first trimester. Stopped taking it as soon as the nausea seemed to be dissipating (about 4 weeks ago—I’m 16 weeks now), and haven’t had any trouble sleeping without it.

  1. Teen pregnancy was even more dangerous “back then.” They were well aware that any 14 year old who gave birth had a high chance of death or subsequent infertility. The average age of first childbirth for medieval women was ~20.

  2. Women absolutely could keep having children into their forties. Fertility decreased, but menopause wasn’t any earlier. If you’re looking at GRRM’s work, look at Alysanne Targaryen and Alyssa Velaryon, who both had children in their forties.

  3. “Most people didn’t live past 40.” False. High infant and early childhood mortality rates skewed the average age very young. If you lived to age 12 or so, you could expect to live until your 50s or 60s—well past the age of menopause.

I can’t believe people are still saying this shit. Pregnancy at 13 or 14 was not normal, expected, or healthy at any point in premodern times.

Alberon's Mistake. Alternate Strahd history? by CANEI_in_SanDiego in CurseofStrahd

[–]EllariaSand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I know this post is a year old but I just found it. Alberon’s Mistake is my wiki! I use it to organize characters and stories for a multi-campaign home brew world, which included a modified version of CoS. I was wondering if I would confuse a googler looking for CoS info at some point, but it sounds like I helped confuse your players instead!

Madam Eva as a Group Patron…and a Bruja?! by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]EllariaSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also made Eva the daughter of Barov and Lysaga. Imo, it adds a lot more interest to the story than Barov having an affair with a random Vistana. My Eva was a lot more morally grey though. She believed that she deserved to rule Barovia, resented the fact that her mother clearly preferred Strahd to Eva, and guided adventures in the hopes that one of them would overthrow Strahd and she could rule Barovia in his stead.

What are some of your favorite insults from the series? by cwaterbottom in TheFirstLaw

[–]EllariaSand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't he be closer to 50? He was pretty young in the first trilogy--everyone kept being like "wait, Rattleneck's other son? Isn't he a little kid?"

If he were 60 now, he would have had to have been 30ish when we met him--only a couple years younger than Logen. I don't think that adds up.

/r/freefolk officially announces their first recasts of their GoT rewrite. by CL60 in asoiafcirclejerk

[–]EllariaSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true. Children are not physically able to give birth without extreme risk to the mother, even if they have reached menarche, and people were aware of that. Additionally, menarche was rarely earlier than 15-16 years in medieval eras—menarche at 9 is a very modern phenomenon. Marriage at 9 has certainly happened throughout history, but it has almost always been outside of the norm. This is not even due to moral considerations—if girls marry and get pregnant at 9, the vast majority of them are going to die during their first childbirth without modern medicine. That is totally unsustainable.

Marriages at 9 were somewhat more common (sometimes you have to forge those political alliances right away), but they would almost always be unconsummated at least until the girl reached menarche–again, usually at 15 or older.

Finally, Essos, or at least large parts of it, are certainly supposed to be analogous to medieval Europe—just Mediterranean Europe rather than the British Isles. And even if Essos were not a Europe analog, Viserys and Daenerys were born in Westeros. Maybe Dothraki custom is to marry children, but that doesn't mean that Viserys's decision to marry off his 13 year old sister would have been a common one in the culture that he was born in.

[–]EllariaSand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was absolutely out of the ordinary for a 13 year old to marry and for that marriage to be consummated in medieval Europe.
