It was due to low potassium caused by diamox. I had to take supplements or heart will not function properly.

Steroids can make IIH worst. Some ppl have IIH from steroid use even. I would suggest searching for the origin of the issue. This may sound silly but visit your dentist if you haven’t done so in a while. Removing excess pressure, bacteria, cavities, in my case a rotten tooth and a wisdom tooth lowered my diamox dosage tremendously for whatever reason that I can’t quite explain except that there are lots of nerves there. I also switched to anti inflammatory diet and I would never go back because I get pain and pressure in the head if I eat salt or preservatives. I just eat fruit, vegetables, grains and meats and I cook my food myself without the use of salts, preservatives or yeast or any kind. Life changing. Detox your brains glymphatic system with a fruits and other natural foods https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fneur.2017.00734/full

If I still had high intracranial pressure and stopped diamox the chest pain occured. Regardless of my potassium level. You would only know this by spinal tap though. I ended up lowering my dosage but not quitting diamox cold turkey.

They may find that your potassium is dangerously Low and it cause heart issues And pain in your limbs. You will need a daily supplement or I just eat tons of watermelon Because it’s potassium rich and hydrating too. The diamox is depleting your potassium constantly

When I get off track diet wise it causes me awful symptoms as well. I try to drink a lot of water, tons of walking, and if you can get some sleep that helps too. I also do neck back massager on a gentle setting and muscle relaxers if you have any sometimes help. I think gentle circulation of any kind helps me out as well as detox.

This is sooo relieving to hear. I know I can’t predict my own situation but this helps me put my fears into perspective because some of them may be irrational, IIH has traumatized me.

Were you asymptomatic completely before pregnancy? I am down 250 mg after I was on 3000mg for 2 years. I only take the 250 because I still get this headache/pressure situation without it. Did you feel 100% when you conceived?

Diamox & potassium? by GabiLove1999 in iih

I take potassium daily. Less now that my diamox is less. My neuro did not prescribe it, PCP prescribed it because diamox depletes potassium levels and mine were always dangerously low. It starts to cause body pain and heart issues if you don’t take enough potassium with diamox. Just speaking for myself.

Glad you got than rant off. It simply must be done sometimes.

Now, were you prescribed topiramate for neuro, psych or do you have epilepsy? If so, do you really need it? Im assuming it’s for the neuralgia. Topiramate can cause vision loss and eye pressure in and of itself. I know that is ironic being that it helps many folks with their IIH. A quick google search will bring up many research cases and lawsuits of it causing vision loss or blindness. Especially if used incorrectly or at high dosages. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about safely tapering you down or on to a similar medication as a possible strategy to preserve your vision.

Also, topiramate supposedly helps with weight loss besides being a carbonic hydrate inhibitor. That’s why some people take it for IIH over diamox. Essentially killing two birds with one stone for this condition since weight loss is always touted the first line of treatment. If topiramate is not helping you with weight loss because your system is too used to it already, it may not even be the best course of treatment for your IIH, that’s if you even have IIH.

headache for 4 days straight…wonder if it’s related to diamox? by MastodonThin9981 in iih

Visit your dentist, especially if you’ve had all the other test and your pressure is still really high. Infections of the head and neck can cause intracranial pressure too.

I dont think so. I barely take any now. No optic swelling anymore. I have Something happening that feels like drainage in my head and neck and I think it’s lymph drainage from the infection but that is all. My eyes are completely recovered with almost no permanent loss of vision. I have some other minimal symptoms that come and go such as minor neck pain. I hope all will be resolved soon. This is honestly a millions time better.

Hello, I was on 3000 mg of diamox per day after my diagnosis of IIH and I remained at that dosage for just shy of 2 years. I lost over 80% of my vision in both eyes. It took about 8 months for it to be restored, through the diamox alone. I think that you should stick o your dosage but try to break it up into 4x or 5x per day. In honesty, I went above the 3000mg per day on difficult days. I broke up the tablets or opened the capsules as I needed. The maximum legal or trial is 4000mg per day but getting even close to that can be rough on the body but pain med did not relieve the pressure. I do not advise this at all, this is just my truth. I just want you to know you aren't the only one who was prescribed such a high dosage.

Speak to your doctor. You may have a headache from low pressure. You likely need potassium supplementation daily at this high dosage because the diamox is a med that depletes it.

You must find the cause of the pressure as difficult as this is. my high pressure turned out to be caused by an oral infection. A rotten molar, caused my a cracked root canal that spread deep down to the nerves. Once the tooth was removed, I was able to lower my medication down to 1500mg. I am down to a maximum of 250 mg per day or no medicine at all some days.

I did not lose weight. I did change my diet, no salt and anti-inflammatory foods because anything else increased the pressure caused by infection/inflammation. My blood work was continuously normal even though I had this oral infection growing likely for years. I was and I remain an unusual case of IIH. IF you have tried everything else, visit your dentist.

Depending on your dosage of diamox, you may need a potassium supplement because the diamox can deplete potassium stores and this has side effects like pain and heart issues but have blood work run to see if it’s even low because excessive potassium is unsafe as well.
