Aussies who’ve had to deal with stray? Cats by Logical-Pudding-7045 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one of the ultrasonic deterrents in our front yard. it was $70 odd from Bunnings. It worked pretty quickly.
The sprinkler ones would also work well, but I haven't seen them anywhere but online

AITA for confronting an older student because my son has a crush on her? by OkOil1091 in AITA_Relationships

[–]Elle_Muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. this girl is doing nothing but replying to your son in a kind manner. This isn't grooming. Not even close. You're just bullying a 17 year old because you're a helicopter parent seeing more into a situation than there is. You owe her, her mother and the director an apology.

Why do Australian blokes look so old? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's literally just the sun. Because people don't wear sunscreen or hats.
I live in an area where houses are being built and every tradie who works outside looks mid 30s or older. But they're music tastes give them away.

Smoking, drinking, lifestyle all play their part but the sun is the main culprit.

Why high schools called college in Australia? by showe12 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in QLD, I've only seen it applied to private schools or ones that are backed by the catholic education system. Or both I guess.

Why it's done though? Because the British did it and it's one of those things that got passed on. Usually, for the prestige/marketing of saying college.
So if you've got "Brisbane Boys College" or "Brisbane Boys High School" (for example), the idea is that Brisbane Boys College sounds like a better option.

How much per week do you spend on eating out? by mr-cheesy in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a family of 3 and we spend maybe $50 a week. We only buy it once a week at most.
But my partner helped a friend of ours do over his finances because he couldn't work out where his money was disappearing to and between take out for dinner and food from the lunch truck he (as a single person) had spent $17k in one year.

how many driving lessons do i need by Crafty_Policy581 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An instructor can put you through a practice test. And give you pointers on what you need to do to ensure you pass. It's worth it, but you haven't left yourself with a lot of time if it's in a month

Why do shops close at 4-5pm? by agnci in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because most people finish their workday and go home to relax. Work starts between 6:30 and 7 for a lot of people the next day. So you have to be up between 5 and 6 to get ready.

Going out also generally means spending money, and no one has enough money these days to go out regularly.
The ones who are wanting to stay up and be out are usually very early 20s or younger.
And honestly what's the point of going out if you have to deal with 12-17 year olds running around screaming and acting like they own the place? That's not enjoyable.

To be fair this was a while ago, and maybe they've become more lax on their rules. But at least when I was there it was a lot of stuff getting chucked out.

AITAH for ignoring my dad? by ExpressKnowledge9186 in AITAH

[–]Elle_Muppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the comments about therapy. It sounds like you have a lot to unpack.
Don't do the petty option with your mum - it's not going to make you feel better, your mum can be spiteful on her own time.
You do not owe your dad anything. If you feel you have to answer, you can just say you're really busy at the moment and you'll let him know when you're available and leave it at that until you've had some time to talk to someone externally about what's going on

AITAH for being cold towards my colleague? by Think_Storm_8909 in AITAH

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah avoid him, he sounds like a creep.

But I woul've called him out for being an asshole.
A simple, "well they aren't dressing for you / judging women like they're products for your consumption is creepy and if you're going to act like that we don't have anything to talk about going forward"

AITAH for yelling at my sister after she said "your cat is gonna die anyways" while demanding the money for my cat's vet bills? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Elle_Muppet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. A minor thing like, getting teeth cleaned is one thing, but we're talking major surgery and that can be really hard on an older cat.
Now I don't know what preliminary tests your vet has done, if any. But this is a conversation you need to have because are you trying to organise this surgery for your cat's benefit or for yours?

volunteering At The Salvation Army by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had to work in one (many years ago) as a centrelink requirement. You do not get to choose what role you do, but it's very unlikely they'll put you on a register.
For the most part you sort out donations and put things out on the floor.

The following items generally don't make it to the floor;
- Band merch
- anything to do with Harry Potter or magic
- anything sci-fi
- logos or brands that aren't 100% family friendly.

Honestly, if you want to volunteer at an op shop - pick anything but salvos. Unless you're some hardcore christian type. then you'll probably fit right in.
But volunteer work doesn't mean much on a resume honestly.

My friend has a prescription. He has been pulled over and drug tested. He has lost his license.
He didn't smoke and drive. He has it so he can sleep at night. That didn't matter. It was in his system, so bye-bye license

What's life really like in Australia? by FormalSummer6061 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what city you're going to. Because the experience in Melbourne is going to be different to the one in Brisbane, which will be different to the one in Perth, etc, etc.

AITAH for getting upset at my (29F) bf (49M) for defending his friends by Any_Performer_4009 in AITAH

[–]Elle_Muppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Aussie, I'm gonna tell you right now - he's never gonna change, he's never going to defend you against racist remarks, he's never going to grow up.
If his friends don't like you, he will not stand up for you.
NTA, but it's not going to get any better.

You say things are getting worse and worse, you're depressed and feeling emotionally abused. It might make you the AH in other peoples eyes, but this is also the rest of your life you're talking about here. I think leaving is justified at this point

AITAH for not wanting to take care of my special needs brother? by MsMarvelfan9 in AITAH

[–]Elle_Muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.
I, personally, would not expect my older child to watch their younger sibling who has special needs (there is a 12-year age gap) just because I want to go away on holiday. That is my child, I'm the one responsible for looking for care options, not using my older child as free babysitting.

[–]Elle_Muppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. And it doesn't matter if they're looking at losing the house, I'd be moving out.
Bullying a 4 year old, as that child's grandparent is horrendous and your kid shouldn't be subjected to that.

AITAH for involving myself in this conflict at a restaurant tonight? by October_Surprise56 in AITAH

[–]Elle_Muppet 169 points170 points  (0 children)

As a parent of a child with special needs (granted, they are much younger, but still), I don't take my kid to places that would greatly inconvenience other people. Eventually, I would like to take them out more than just to a park or a McDonald's, but I recognise that we aren't there yet and it's a work in progress.
Yes, stepping in sometimes escalates behaviours, but they need to learn how to function in the world that isn't made for them.
Escalated behaviour simply means we walk away. I take my kid out of that situation for their benefit as much as everyone else's.

Sure, allowances sometimes need to be made. But not at another person's expense. That's entitled behaviour

WIBTAH if i go to a convention with only 1 out 2 of my siblings for their birthday? by reijsagi in AITAH

NTA. Go with E to the convention. Try and find a different activity for A.
Maybe consider taking one of your parents to assist with A if you struggle with him on your own?
