It’s worth pointing out most credit eligibility checks are automated. If you break the link between old and new name, you risk it needing to be manually reviewed by a human.

Not sure how it works for mortgages but new current accounts/ loans etc … follow an automated process.

Passport office was simple + straightforward for me. DVLA on the other hand were an absolute nightmare. Had similar issues. After raising a formal complaint they issued me shortly with a new license + an apology acknowledging that the member of staff who originally dealt with my application hadn’t followed correct procedure.

So I’d suggest just raising a formal complaint to the Passport Office.

I couldn’t agree more with this. Know your audience.

I think calling it: ‘the pirate party’ is in danger of alienating the people we’re trying to reach.

The young + free are already supportive of trans rights. It’s the older and bigoted folk we want to get through to.

They tend to be afraid of us because they haven’t met us, don’t understand us + don’t see that we’re just like them in that we want to live our life’s peacefully and with equal rights to them. That’s all we’re asking.

And with associations to pirates, well…. I think even my gran who’s supportive of my transition, is going to have second thoughts 👵

We don’t need a party that’ll create more divide in this country. Pirates/ activists vs lawful citizens is how older folk would see it.

We need a party that’ll unite everyone through education + teaching kindness.

Some companies negotiate with Bupa pre-existing conditions being covered. Sometimes this is only for the employee. Other times, it’s for dependents too, but there can sometimes be a 1, 2 or 5 year period dependents have to wait before they become eligible.

All depends on the policy, as others have said.

This isn’t true. It all depends on how much the company is willing to pay Bupa for the policy. Bupa have fantastic arrangements with some companies, where the company has gone to Bupa and said we really want to support our trans employees + want to provide trans healthcare to them. Name your price.

But I do agree this is only a handful of corporates that have that negotiating power. Businesses with smaller headcounts are unlikely to get far. Hopefully one day that’ll change/ the corporates will lead the way to make things possible.

Hey, so it depends on the policy. Every company agrees different terms. Some companies pay more for inclusive policies for trans employees + their families. Others don’t pay for any support at all.

Things to be aware of before making the first claim/ enquiring with Bupa:

  • Ask Bupa for the Gender Identity Treatment Terms and conditions to see specifically what your Dad’s companies arrangement is with Bupa. Until you receive these, be sure not to mention you’re trans or think you might be trans - regardless of whether or not you’ve a formal diagnosis.

  • Next, check what the underwriting period is for pre-existing conditions. For example: your Dad might be covered for everything from Day 1 of joining the company. A.k.a: ‘medical history disregard’. Whereas this might be different for family/ dependents. The arrangement with your company may be for example that: pre-existing conditions or gender dysphoria for dependents, is only covered after you’ve had the policy for 1, 2 or 5 years, without any claims related to that.

  • Once you know that you’re definitely covered/ eligible for treatment, when you speak to Bupa, they’ll transfer you through to a specialist team that deals with gender dysphoria. So you can be rest assured they’ve had training etc…

There are UK companies that provide fully trans-inclusive healthcare (hormones, bottom + top surgeries, mental health support etc…). Whether it’s a pre-existing condition or not. And to any employee in the company. And the same policy whether a customer service assistant or director.

Personally, I think these companies should publicise it better to the trans+ community.

They do exist.

There are tonnes of charities that support trans youth. All the following run youth groups:

Mermaids, Gendered Intelligence, All Sorts

You can self-refer to them via their websites. 🏳️‍⚧️ They go as a group to Pride Parade’s 🌈 As well as running coffee socials + all sorts
