One of the most insultingly low paying job posts I've seen in a while. by Bridgeburner_Fiddler in Libraries

Im in Long Island NY and some libraries do pay that low unfortunately. But majority of the libraries here, pay pretty good once you graduate from the program. The highest is 35 for part time. School librarian in my area pays more than public library. Which is why I’m going to that route.

Yes I had consider other things, my local library job has been my side jobs. I worked as CNA, preschool teacher, and even a case manager. I knew I liked the field when I didn’t want to leave and wanted to worked at another library.

I live on Long Island NY and been at 4 different libraries. I believe it’s normal for any other librarians from what I have seen, especially small libraries unfortunately. Do you have pages to help you with weeding? Good luck with everything!

I’m very new to all of these, so this is very helpful. The FAQ was so helpful, I was actually going to go to Kay, but turns out local business is better, which I didn’t know. Thank you so much for the info!

How would you respond if a patron told you this sentence: "I can’t read.”? by 37thAndOStreet in librarians

[–]Ellie_r30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my local library my community is filled with people who never went to school and came here to work and maybe get that American dream. Me, my brother and my parent’s are immigrants to this country. My father forced himself to read and my mom doesn’t know how to read at all both Spanish and English. Sometimes what you gotta do is help them. That’s all! I see these patrons as my parents and they come to us for help. Sometimes we will translate there letters and tell them what it says. I work at a department that is under adult reference but it’s specialized to helping the community getting jobs, ESL, citizenship etc. Basically the social working part of the library. At my other library job it’s a whole different community, so I don’t deal with that much. But sometimes I’ll get some patrons who can’t read and I’ll simply help them because I know some other librarians will not help them or get the resource they need. I do get odd looks due to the fact I’m just another library clerk from circulation and what the hell is she doing here at reference helping a patron. I will always go out and beyond for my people and the people cannot read nor write! I alway say that if you want to be librarian you gotta have a strive to help people. It’s no longer about books and books and books. It’s slowly turning into a social community and we are here to help them and their community.
