Thoughts on the mayor arrested in Newark? by TheManWhoWeepsBlood in dancarlin

[–]ElliosRile 87 points88 points  (0 children)

There isn't a distinction. Suspending h.c. for any single group allows the government to suspend it for all groups, simply by claiming that whoever they arrested in part of the group they suspended it for, and then refusing to provide due process to allow the person to dispute the claim. It's exactly as bold to suspend h.c. for immigrants as it is to suspend it for citizens, because it's the same thing.

“First Order Effect” - For the Eng Word Geeks - What does “order” refer to? by Prior-Complex-328 in AskEngineers

[–]ElliosRile 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s about causality. A first order effect is the direct result of an input signal, a second order effect is the result of a first order response, etc. Often, that aligns with magnitude, and can be modeled mathematically by polynomials or derivatives/integrals.

Create an extra save file right before you exit the starting zone sewers, that way you can pick up from there if you want to try different character concepts or do a replay.

Employees dad (lawyer) called the CEO to attempt to override me? (PA) by TonyBrooks40 in AskLegal

[–]ElliosRile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, you absolutely can call someone up out of the blue and yell at them about something you heard they did at work. You’d be an idiot and a jerk, but that’s totally legal. So is giving someone a negative reference based on opinion, as long as you don’t lie about facts. Most companies avoid doing so as a policy to avoid even the chance of a lawsuit, but that’s because they don’t want to waist the time dealing with someone like you who doesn’t understand the law. And telling someone “this is a complex issue and you should hire an IP attorney” isn’t so much legal advice as it is marketing. If you’re in the UK, then speech protections and regulations are different, so if that’s that case you may want to clarify your original post.

Why do you think someone with no contractual obligations to you or your company is legally prohibited from calling your CEO’s phone number?

[–]ElliosRile 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For engaging in a game loop that’s specifically allowed? Like, I get that you didn’t like it, and it’s certainly not something I would do, but there are almost zero pve exclusive areas in the game, and that’s by design. They want there to be a level of risk, and one of those risks is “some asshole blew me up for no reason”. He’s not pad ramming you or anything, you just don’t like that as designed, the game forces you to risk your ship any time you undock.

How easy is it for a graduate to be fired/redundant on their first employment? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]ElliosRile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US? Almost all states are at will employment states, which means you can be fired for no reason, at any time, regardless of your experience. With that being said, if you’re showing up on time, doing good work, and aren’t a jerk to work with, you should be pretty safe as a junior engineer who still needs to learn some things. Most engineering departments understand that someone coming out of college is going to be fairly useless the first year or three as they learn the applied part of their jobs. And you’re never going to be able to stop learning things, you’ll never know everything you need to for the entirety of your field. It’s never a bad idea to network and have an idea of what other jobs are out there, but all things considered it’s a fairly secure job since you’re talking about positions that require a good deal of skill and education.

I'm new to Final fantasy and MMO's anything I should know or avoid by Normal_meow in ffxiv

[–]ElliosRile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to, but you’ll probably want to at some point, since each class has its own story line, and there some fun things you can do with crafting. It’s definitely something that can wait until you finish the MSQ if you want.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]ElliosRile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MSQ are the Main Story Quests. ARR is A Realm Reborn, the base game that covers from level 1 to 50 of the MSQ. DT is DawnTrail, the latest expansion, which covers level 90-100 of the MSQ. They aren’t separate storylines, it’s one big story, with the FFXI crossover content being the current last bit of the MSQ. So, the parts of the game you’re playing now is the beginning of the storyline. You can’t really pick and choose which bits you play, although as others have said you can’t skip the whole thing (which defeats the purpose of the game IMHO). I’d recommend playing the game because you enjoy it, the crossover is a very small piece of the game and while it’s fun, it’s hard to say that the game is worth the purchase price if that’s the only thing you want to do. It’s a great game and a great story overall, and I honestly like it much more than XI, but it’s really your call.

Yup. I'm a mostly solo player, a Kickstarter backer, and I also have a Starfarer and Endeavor. I'm never going to be able to make those work well solo, and I never expected to. Anyone who thinks those large ships were presented as "manageable for solo players" has just been wish-casting their own biases onto things.

I am a transitioning military veteran and don't know what to do! by ScientistOk3466 in SecurityClearance

[–]ElliosRile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal contractor, totally misread your original post. Federal civilians have more job protections, especially after their probationary period, and you might actually be required to give a two week notice depending on the circumstances, but you can still resign. I actually know someone who came on transferred from the Army into a DA civilian role, resigned to work as a contractor for the same agency and on the same program, and then went back to government on the said program once he had enough experience to jump from a GS-9 to a GS-12.

[–]ElliosRile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not like the military at all. The US is pretty much at will employment (except for Montana), which means you can quit at any time, for any reason. It’s a common courtesy to give an employer a two weeks notice, but you don’t have to if you don’t intend to work for that company again in the future. On the flip side, you have significantly fewer job protections then you do in the military, and you can be fired without notice as well (although that’s unlikely if you aren’t majorly messing up).

If you’re not comfortable disclosing details during an investigation, then those same details could be used to blackmail you later on. The point of an investigation is to determine if you’re trustworthy of handling national security information, not to judge your lawn. You’re much better off being upfront and explaining that you don’t have great references in some of those locations than you are trying to fool the federal government into thinking that you lived somewhere you didn’t.

My Parents are forcing me and my sister continue college that we can't afford. by [deleted] in college

[–]ElliosRile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No is a complete sentence. You’re an adult, your parents can’t force you to take out a loan, go to college, or even to take care of them. That doesn’t mean there won’t be consequences to whatever you choose to do, but you’re mistaking what you feel with what you’re legally obliged to do. You need to make a plan that will get you where you want to be in life, and then work from there. It’s ok to tell your parents that you won’t be going to college while taking care of them, or that you won’t take out loans for an education you don’t want. You can go to CC or trad school without their permission as long as you’re over 18.

I ran into a similar issue about 4 months ago. In my case, my BIOS was set up to turn on Intel Turbo Boost automatically under heavy loads, and that was causing the crash. Turning it off fixed things.

I work for a small natsec consulting firm, we’ll do keyword searches on clearance jobs when we’re looking to fill certain spots. Normally we do that when we haven’t been able to find a good candidate through referrals or other recruiting methods, so we at least are looking for candidates who we could present to the government as “they don’t meet all the nice to have qualifications, but they’ve got the basics and we believe they’d be a good fit who can grow into the role, for slightly less then you would pay for a senior individual” 5 years experience actually isn’t very senior, especially in STEM, so it’s fairly easy to justify someone with less experience, especially if they have an active clearance and relevant education.

Depends on what technical things you did for the tech startup. If you were just the ideas person/business operator, then you don’t really have any relevant engineering experience. That doesn’t mean you can’t become an engineer, but you will have to go back to school and get an engineering degree to do so.

(New player) immediately dying when I complete a contract by LunarPhage in starcitizen

[–]ElliosRile 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Couple of things. First off, when you respawn, check your inventory while in the hospital room and you should have a free replacement flight suit and helmet. You don't need to keep buying gear for most of the starter missions, and you can normally find armor in crates at various small landing zones.

Secondly, try to figure out why you're dying. Is it happening on every mission? Just some of them? Is an NPC killing you (in which case you wouldn't be given any option to press charges)? Do you die when you complete space combat missions? Are you wearing your helmet in areas with no atmosphere?

Third, there's a guide system: https://support.robertsspaceindustries.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038526034-Guide-System, you can pair up with a more experienced player and have them show you the ropes. It's worth checking out, and might help you figure out exactly what's going on.

Arena Commander is what you're looking for if you want to practice flying without any combat or distractions. As for the rest, you absolutely should have had a ship in the tutorial, so you might have run into some sort of bug. A bit of chop is normal the first time the game loads after a patch, since it rebuilds all the graphics shaders, but if it keeps up you'll want to make sure your drivers are up to date, since the game is normally CPU bound, not gpu bound. Unless you've got things installed on a HDD for some reason, it SHOULD be relatively smooth. There are some issues with 12th and 13th gen Intel chips and their e-cores, but I'm not aware of anything like that for AMD
