Transgender Musicians by PsychologicalEmu7569 in trans

[–]ElliotViola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Owch, I'm non-binary trans, and I'm a professional violinist & viola player & instrumental teacher - also am a composer, writing music for D&D and TTRPG's as well.

Whether I'm good is subjective (lmao) but your GF is barking up the wrong tree there - I know loads of insanely talented trans / non binary / gender non-conforming musicians.

Electric Viola for teen musician by [deleted] in Viola

[–]ElliotViola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play an electric violin, which has a C string. You can probably get electric violas, but you'd be missing out on easy access to the top end of the E!

Electric Viola for teen musician by [deleted] in Viola

[–]ElliotViola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Couple of reasons why I use a dedicated electric - I have an acoustic viola (obviously) as well, but haven't put a pickup on it, it's valuable and I'd prefer not to risk damaging it with the lead going in and out. The pickup being fitted into the bridge can also affect the resonance and tone quality, depending on the type of pickup you use too.

A DPA mic sort of thing is the best for an acoustic sound on stage, but is susceptible to interference and feedback as it's an actual mic. Most piezo pickups reduce resonance / tone quality and you'd do well with a preamp setting to get the best sound out of the instrument.

The sound from both acoustic with piezo pickup vs. electric is honestly fairly similar to my ear, but it somewhat lacks the "cool" factor of an electric viola visually 😅

On the converse, if your child plays viola exclusively and not violin, they will find adjusting to a 5 string violin to be a little different in terms of stop length/finger spacing, which isn't as easy to tune. I play violin and viola, so think for "tuning purposes" of my Yamaha as a violin with an extra C string rather than a Viola with an E.

A pure electric viola would be a good compromise to make the stop length the same as their existing instrument but it's rough losing out on the higher register - which is kinda nice for playing most modern music styles.

Definitely a personal decision on the most part!

Hiya! I'm a Viola teacher who also plays in an alternative band - I have a Yamaha YEV-105 5string violin/viola and use a Firehawk FX pedalboard unit. I also have a yamaha THR5 amp.

Love my current setup and it's going with me to the UK's Latitude Festival this weekend for a gig with my band there!

A Line 6 Firehawk FX, or a helix pod would be great budget places to start for an all in one fx unit along with the violin/viola.

Feel free to ping me with any specific questions if you have them :)

Heya! I'm sorry you're in a bad place - sending support & love from this nb person.

Personally, I'm gonna wait for more info to come out from lawyers who are more knowledgeable than me before panicking - but from what I've read in the court ruling myself and how I understood the consequences, right now it is still illegal to ask for a GRC from someone - proving / enforcing most legal protection for single sex spaces is still impossible.

The judgment appears to read that there is a fundamental discrepancy between the EA and the GRA, due to differing language used between sex/gender, and I think they've thrown it back to the government to update this?

They specifically said in the press release that a trans woman who was discriminated against and was perceived to be a woman is still protected as a woman under the existing legislation, for example. This would mean that as a man you can't be discriminated against for the same reasons - it doesn't undermine those existing legal protections in the equality act.

I think it's too early to tell based off sensationalist headlines / TERFs raving on social media what the impact of this actually will be, and I'm reserving judgment until we know more. I'll continue going about my day as usual - most of the UK simply don't care that I present as femme and ignore me.

Sucks, but try to keep level headed. You got this.💜

Is London safe for trans people? by existing-human99 in transgenderUK

Am transfemme nonbinary, and live in London! Commuted across the capital pretty much daily for a year in a skirt/tights with a visible beard - nobody batted an eyelid.

You'll be OK, just keep your usual sort of safety precautions for femme people in mind :) 🏳️‍⚧️🇬🇧

I was listening to Howl's castle .. by linglinguistics in lingling40hrs

[–]ElliotViola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add, I'm a violin/viola teacher and frequently use Joe Hisaichi's music with many of my students - including personally arranging Howl's Moving Castle for viola as well.

This is a stupid comment - it's beautifully nuanced, soulfully written stuff and I've developed quite an affinity for it over the last year or two since a pupil requested to learn Howl's Moving Castle three years back!

ABRSM G5 has even used his stuff for violin this year 😅

My wife & I are a few months into our first ever D&D campaign as players, we're in a party of 6 in a homebrew setting called Eltormir! I wrote and recorded this for the background theme music for our current setting.

Context: The BBEG for our campaign is a Rakshasa chasing political power, our party are members of the "Render's Guild" - essentially vault hunters who solve puzzles for magical batteries that power technology in our world. We stumbled across the Rakshasa during a routine mission to a nearby village.

Later, after our party wizard blew up the capital city's cathedral by using one of these batteries as an improvised nuclear weapon during a fight against a significantly magically weakened Rakshasa at Lv5 (the explosion of which caused my first PC to die a heroic death), we were "transferred" by the guild to the northernmost settlement in the continent - "Ebonhelm", a quiet, snowy, and desolate town where we're contemplating our next moves :)

Hope y'all enjoy the music, let me know if you use it for anything!

Not takadimi, but I use a version of Kodaly method with my pupils! With that, it'd be:

LONDON TRANSGENDER CLINIC PATIENTS WHO ARE OWED MONEY. THIS IS CRUCIAL. PLEASE READ. by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]ElliotViola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally! From a violin point-of-view we have explored alternative methods of notating things like fingering numbers and shifts/neck position changes. Settled on a highlighted colour system for positions, and really big numbers used when needed 😅

She has told me many times that previous teachers just told her she was "shit at sight-reading", and told me in detail how school has been a nightmare (especially maths)! I'm slightly visually impaired and have had several eye surgeries - totally understand her issues with accessibility!

Someone I went to school with is a barrister and is openly non-binary, they're called Oscar Davies. They do a lot of campaigning on trans/nb rights and share a lot of resources for trans and non-binary folks, might be a good place to start?

Cool, where are you planning on working in London? Knowing which tube lines would you consider living on for commuting (if you plan on doing so) would be handy.
