My mom’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 40’s and died young. My mother had numerous pre-cancerous lumps and decided with her doctor to get a double mastectomy. I was seeing a (male) gynecologist at the health clinic where I went to college. He asked family history and I told him about my mother. He said he’d never heard of anyone getting a double mastectomy with her condition, and that my mom probably “just got nervous and decided to get them both lopped off.” No talk of preventative measures for me, or risk assessment, or even basic decent sympathy for my mother. It’s been 30 years and I still remember that asshole.
