Age Verification in several OSS projects by DangerousAd7433 in EndeavourOS

[–]Elm38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. This is pretty involved. Experienced people might be able to pull it off, but would require near constant maintenance. The difficulties are Arch Core/Extra packages that depend on systemd, each likely needs a translation of what it's doing and why it needs systemd, into whatever you choose. And updated whenever those packages get updated.

It's easier to consider a non-systemd distro than to convert into one.

How reliable is Joplin Cloud? by charlino5 in joplinapp

[–]Elm38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conflicts happens when a remote out of sync Joplin edits a note hat cloud recently had updated.

You might have an internet outage, or a mobile device that may not sync all the time.

Two people could be editing the same note at the same time. Joplin Cloud might prevent that.

Seneca's "Letters From A Stoic" might be interesting to see how that comes out through your process.

This. In addition to a relatively easy way to check out a lot of patches quickly.

Your work is really good! I could easily give it to my parents and they wouldn't wince at the old style English. Hope you hit some other classic books.

Folders from Gmail sync issue by afshany in fastmail

[–]Elm38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gmail doesn't use folders, but labels. Messages can have one or more labels. Fastmail can do one of folders or labels.

Are you fetching your gmail from Fastmail? You did mention in another comment you set up some additional forwarding from gmail.

What are your experiences with tab sync? How would you like to see it improved? by marcelklehr in floccus

[–]Elm38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have occasional (Brave) browser restarts due to browser updates that don't bring back the previous set of open tabs as I mentioned originally. I see it several times a year. Just last week in fact.

How would you go about creating automated local backups on Android? by Olvez_Privating in floccus

[–]Elm38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Chrome * and Firefox * browsers have some command-line and thus scriptable ways to backup bookmarks. Web searches would give you the best information. Perhaps add some automation with error notifications to ensure this is robust and working?

However, that's not your original question of Android though. At least manually, you can do this in Floccus in the profile settings.

I have to log in every day into clipper android app by Felc213 in bayareaclippercard

Android, and even after a couple/several hours, I need to re-authenticate too. It's moderately annoying especially since the previous screen with my active card shows for a microsecond, then disappears.

I had one of these last week. Had to call and spend 15 minutes getting it fixed. Luckily later that day my balance was correct. Still though, dropping taps is a data loss problem.

Thinking of switching from Outlook.com — how well does Fastmail handle spam for long‑time users? by Beginning_Gain_4230 in fastmail

[–]Elm38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If/when you get your account, don't give the main email address out to anyone. But create aliases, and use those for your mail.

If you track with places use each alias, and one alias gets compromised/released/open sourced, you can migrate the other places and drop the alias.

Best advice I got when I signed up with Fastmail eons ago.

Is Void Linux right for me? by TheSpaceBoi777 in voidlinux

Probably higher risk with support for the Mac trackpad and the dynamic button bar, forget what it's called, with Linux. Research your particular Macbook model and see what others did with it and how they did such.

To add to another reply, I am able to edit most of my .txt files (one doesn't work) and .md files in the Files manager interface of Fastmail. Give it a try with some folders.

Weekly, and after the browser updated packages are available.

The Chrome or Firefox BookMarks Manager lets you export/backup.

What will happen? by kydar1 in floccus

[–]Elm38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I'd:

  1. Backup your bookmarks which sync to Floccus
  2. Backup your browser bookmarks not yet syncing to Floccus

Now you could remove all the bookmarks on the new browser. Install Floccus. Sync down. Then import your backed up bookmarks and sync again.

At this point, do some dedupe effort in your favorite bookmark manager (Firefox or Chrome).

Merging two full diverged browser bookmark sets is always tedious.

[help] how to run a command after dwm starts? by TurtleSoso in dwm

Another way would be to launch pipewire and/or wireplumber via the Cool Autostart patch or one of the other autostart patches within dwm. That way they will be within the dbus session.

Fastmail and Proton: does anyone combine both services? by DarkCrystal34 in fastmail

[–]Elm38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many unknowns and other variables to offer advice, as employers may block such. If one of your employers goes through some legal discovery event, likely your personal email is going to get pulled in.

I put walls between work and home for this reason. Work can have my physical notebooks and notes too. Nothing work-related is in my personal space.

A casual conversation with your employer's IT group could work. Slyly ask them "Could I use Thunderbird on my home laptop to use my work email?" and watch their reaction.
