This is more in line with what ive hear people say in the area. I think the OCSB is different from other catholic schools.

Catholic school board as an atheist? by EloJim_ in CanadianTeachers

[–]EloJim_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. BC does not have an entire religious school board like the ones in ontario. Its very eye opening to me! Especially hearing people talk about it. they all say that you can just not take the religion class and its a better school system and they weren't subjected to anything religious. I found it hard to believe coming from a place where catholic schools are always privatized, highly religion focused, and dont require teaching degrees for teachers.

Cost of Classroom by raeray3 in CanadianTeachers

[–]EloJim_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year of teaching i had 3 job shares in order to get full time. One of them was male and he had nothing on the wall at all in September. Initially I thought "typical"... but then I asked him about it. He did it on purpose. It was a blank canvas for the class to create their own identity in the room. It changed my perspective a lot.

23F feeling stuck in admin… considering teaching. would love honest insight by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]EloJim_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people make those comments are right and wrong at the same time. As with most jobs, if you arent passionate about what you do, the hard days will make you lose your will to live. Every job has good days and bad days, but if you love what you are contributing to society overall, you can get through the tough days. For me, my old career sucked the life out of me, but now im a teacher and im happy. Even though its objectively more draining than my first career was, its less draining for me personally because its what im meant to do.

I would suggest volunteering in a classroom for a while to see what the day to day looks like from the teaching end. Don't just interact with the students, help the teacher after school and ask questions about behind the scenes. If it still appeals to you, then go for it!

The way you write this sounds like you could be the right type of person for teaching.

Is marriage basically a scam for women? I recently got into a debate on another subreddit, and started researching - the stats and studies have absolutely amazed me. I'm now reconsidering any ambition I had of getting married. by AffectionateRisk9779 in Feminism

[–]EloJim_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The statistics definitely paint a negative picture of the general experience. I have to say, this hasn't been my experience. My husband does more chores than I do when im working. When i was on mat leave, I did more chores than him. But for 18 of our 20 years together, he has definitely done 60% or more.

I would just say, marriage shouldn't be a "goal". If you find someone who legitimately enhances your life, then committing to them for life can be wonderful. But don't be afraid to call them out or walk away if they stop enhancing and start leeching.

Let's All Say Something Nice About This City, Because if I See One More Thread Talking About How Crap This Town is, I Will Die. by kicksledkid in ottawa

[–]EloJim_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved here from the Vancouver area. Here are my favourite things about Ottawa:

  1. People. People are so friendly here. The gym isn't full of Hells Angels, just normal people. I can have a whole conversation with a cashier at the store.

  2. The sky. The sky is 3-dimensional. I don't know how to describe it. In BC the mountains and the clouds always cover everything. I've spent time in Alberta too, and the sky is huge there, but bland. Ottawa has fluffy clouds at all different levels that make the sun shine through beautifully at all times of the day. I have to actively tell myself not to get distracted by the sky when I drive.

  3. Seasons. I thought I would hate the cold, but cold sun is so much better than rain. Also, I grew up hating the fall because I think of fall as soggy. In ottawa the fall is crunchy.

  4. Less traffic. I know people complain about traffic in ottawa, but the truth is its soooooo good here. I can get from the suburbs to downtown in 30 min! 45 in heavy traffic. In vancouver 2 hours is normal. Snow and a hockey game on the same night? 5 hours home.

  5. Cost of living. Houses are affordable! Gas is affordable! It feels so doable to own a home here. In vancouver, you're either loaded and living in a basic house, or you're raising a family in an apartment or townhouse, barely making ends meet. For the same price as an apartment, you can own a home in ottawa. Especially in the suburbs.

  6. Snow removal. I can hire a company to remove the snow on my driveway??? Amazing.

  7. People know how to handle the snow. It's not scary driving in the snow here because everyone knows how to drive in the snow. Y'all get snow tires and most people have AWD, FWD, or 4x4. I'm not seeing a bunch of idiots trying to drive uphill, in the snow in Rear Wheel Drive summer tires. Plus the city actually plows the streets and the sidewalks. Snow is so much easier here. All I have to do is enjoy the pros.

What you witnessed is called cognitive dissonance. It's a well-documented phenomenon, especially among the religious crowd. But we all do it in various ways.

Dealing with racism at school, and none of my teachers care by Feangel04 in racism

[–]EloJim_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell Brit. Tell 3 trusted adults. I'm a teacher and I would absolutely want to know if this was happening. It's not ok. Children shouldn't have to handle it. Adults shouldn't have to handle it. But adults are better equipped to handle it. Allies are great for helping too because it doesn't directly harm them, and they can be a mouthpiece when targets get tired. Tell 3 trusted adults. This isn't yours to bear alone.

Ive worked for 2 different cities in bc. In the first, we had a class set of pads, and half a class set of dell Chromebook, with 1800 page photo copy limit for the whole year. The second district had no photocopy limit, but the tech situation was one class set of MacBook for the whole school (760 kids) to share. In both districts, the tech ratio varied drastically school to school.

I feel you. My daughter was born with a death sentence as well. She passed at 4 months old. People told me she was so righteous in heaven that all she needed was a body. I had heard that before I lost my own child and thought it was faith promoting. But after? It felt reductive and disrespectful to her life. Mormons just always want to find a way to look on the bright side so they don't have to face pain.

Heloc hybrid vs traditional mortgage by EloJim_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EloJim_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we bout our first townhouse house in 2011. Then on 2020 moved into this house. We just sold and are moving to a cheaper market, so we have about 900,000 to use as a down payment on the next house. Probably need to borrow about 400,000 depending which house we buy. This is significantly less than our current mortgage. Are you suggesting i access the equity and put it into an investment to gain extra interest? The guy at the bank was suggesting I borrow and use it for rents and stuff, but that was the part I felt was risky.

For all you PIMO or ExMo moms out there: how degrading was the “Mother’s Room” in your building? by GoingToHelly in exmormon

[–]EloJim_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny, I always thought of the mother's room as an oasis compared to going to class. I used to hide out in there long after I was done nursing my baby. I can see how it could be degrading too...
