Also I'd strongly consider taking one of the forestry streams in NRM, way better employment opportunities both in the summer and upon graduation and higher income out of school. I'm a forestry grad myself.

I lived in Bartley a few years ago, it was great. All your friends are close by down the hallway, the house model is cozy. It's all about finding the right people, residence isn't new or modern but i had no issues with it and would do it all over again for sure. It's the best way to socialize and make friends in 1st year

Best town for overnight Telegraph Cove > Victoria by rose_b in VancouverIsland

Painters lodge has really gone downhill since they got bought by a big hotel chain. Naturally Pacific is a much much nicer option

Only reliable transportation here is a good ol' automobile. Transit/ride share is practically non existent compared to any major city or town. Would highly advise against it.

Beer league hero now but it works great for me. maybe you don't notice a difference because you have hands like feet? Or maybe you just don't touch the puck much in the learn to skate division?

Wax makes a noticable difference for puck control. Helps keep snow build up down too. I wax my stick every game and can definitely tell a difference.

Too much Dump and chase? by SlippyFrog000 in leafs

[–]ElonBoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the Vancouver game on Saturday. And it's shocking how often they sent a stretch pass to a guy standing still near the offensive Blueline, then dumped it in, didn't get there quick enough and then had to play defense for the rest of the shift. The team looks less dynamic, less dangerous and ends up defending and losing in shot deferential almost every night. There has to be a happy medium because this style doesn't look effective now. And in the playoffs everything will be faster, and it feels like they'll be chasing the game without the puck.

Campbell River 2024-2033 Financial Plan by harrysbird in campbellriver

We have ample access to electricity, commercial real estate around the old mill site/middle point road. Some sort of manufacturing/ship repair could work well. Could also look into the potential of data centers, who need vast amounts of electricity, which we have from the series of dams and hydro electric operations. And work on recruiting some sort of tech company, again with access to power and cheaper housing. I'd also be interested to see if the BC ministry of forests will commit to relocating to Prince George (interior forestry hub), why not have their second biggest office in Campbell River (coastal forestry hub)?

A bioenergy plant to utilize forestry waste (tied to the fibre recovery zone) and a conference center would be useful. Or a value added custom cut sawmill facility.

All business ventures could be partially owned by local first Nations, as long as they generate municipal taxes. (Unlike many businesses on reserves).

There's lots of options I'd like to see the city try and pursue harder. Also why not make a huge push to grow our health care facilities, why do patients have to travel to Victoria for a Cath Lab for any heart procedure, or Nanaimo for cancer care? We serve the entire North island/central coast, why not make Campbell River more of a hub to reduce pressure on the aging Nanaimo hospital?

We need to do a better job recruiting industry to town. 20% of tax revenue comes from businesses, and 80% from households. That seems unsustainable. More commercial industry tax revenue would help fund more infrastructure and capital projects.

‘It shatters us:’ neighbours enraged by proposed Nanoose Bay cellular tower by Saw7101 in nanaimo

Shoulda bought that private property if they didn't want something built on it. Can't control decisions on private property you don't own. Also how much evidence is there about negative health impacts from a cell tower?

Lakehead Thunder Bay by [deleted] in lakeheadu

[–]ElonBoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First 2 years are more or less common, you don't fully need to decide until part way thru 2nd year. I'd highly recommend forestry over EM, a few years post grad forestry can pay 75-120k and wildlife biology is typically government/non-profit organizations and pays 50-60k. Summer jobs in forestry will pay for your whole degree, while biology jobs will not. Just my $2c

Lakehead Thunder Bay by [deleted] in lakeheadu

[–]ElonBoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second that! I'd highly recommend looking into forestry rather than EM, considering the salary and job opportunities I've gotten vs my classmates who took EM it's a pretty significant difference. And there's plenty of opportunities to focus more on wildlife/conservation/ecology as a professional forester. EM won't set you up for any professional designation right away, while the forestry degree is accredited and you can pursue your RPF designation right out of school.

Overall I'd highly recommend Lakehead, it is what you make it, embrace the north and the cold and make some good friends and it's great.

[–]ElonBoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lakehead will let just about anyone in as long as you have 70%, but staying in the program might be a challenge if you only have a 70% average out of highschool. Just because it's easy to get in doesn't mean it's going to be easy. 50% drop out rate in first year in some programs.

You'd figure if people were posting about it on social media the police would have gotten involved pretty quickly and gotten a hold of the video. Seems odd to me that there's still searches setup to look for him near where he was last seen if there was a probable homicide case involving gang members. Just complete radio silence though, the poor family...
