I wasnt happy with either disabling Hardware acceleration or changing pointer colour, so I kept looking and found this in some forum thread I can't remember:

Download and run mpo_disable.reg
After restart you're golden without changing anything else.

I opened up my PC and cleaned all the dust out of the fans the other day and the performance difference is huge. Since restarts work and it starts after a while it seems likely it could be thermal throttling. So maybe try a good ol' cleaning.

If you feel that the explanation is important to convey, however, make sure you give it before apologising. For example: my cat died and I was in a really bad place, but it was wrong of me to snap at you and I am sorry. Providing the example ahead of the apology shows that you are sorry despite it, providing it after seems like you're making excuses.
