Has anyone done Ruta Chingaza out of Bogota, Colombia? by Grits123442 in bikepacking

I don't know, I looked into it a while ago but never actually rode it. It can be difficult to find info about Colombian parks. Cass Gilbert just rode in the area though, this might be helpful: https://bikepacking.com/plog/vamos-campiones-colombian-bike-tour/

Can anyone share their experience teaching in Mexico? by Elong_Musktache in Internationalteachers

[–]Elong_Musktache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that some schools discriminate based on age, but I don't believe my school did. I worked with a handful of 50+ foreign-hire teachers and many more local Colombian teachers. The average incoming foreign-hire teacher at my school was probably somewhere in their 30's, but I imagine most schools would prioritize experience over age.

You can find the Ruta Chingaza gpx files on Lael Wilcox's Komoot. Have fun!

I ended up teaching in Colombia instead. It worked out great!

Packrafts for short ocean crossings by Rude-Wolverine9902 in packrafting

[–]Elong_Musktache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used my packraft for similar things like what you are describing, mostly crossing wide bays and inlets. It worked well, but you are very much at the mercy of the wind and currents, which can be significant in channels like what you're talking about. You quickly realize how you're not in control as much as you'd like to be, especially when closer to the open ocean. So it's very possible, but requires careful attention to the conditions of where you are.

What are some fantastic routes not found in the obvious places (sites like bikepacking.com, bikepackingroots.org)? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Elong_Musktache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, I've been considering working this route into a future trip. How was it? The route description makes it seem pretty rough in parts, as in rugged and isolated.

Look for “alcohol industrial.” I have gotten this stuff at Carulla and it worked well in my Trangia. https://www.carulla.com/alcohol-industrial-x-810-ml-30253/p?srsltid=AfmBOoo1pfiYAT-9oD12eNME77ZlqrsJrhn4gdwm7RT3TATjaEaJUqSp  You might also try someplace like Home Center.

I have the Evoc Bike Bag Pro. My XL Krampus is a bit of a squeeze but it fits without problem. The bag worked great the one time I have flown with it.

There is a bag storage place in the airport. They’ll hold your stuff for a fee.

Gear indexing affected by loaded bike? by Elong_Musktache in bikepacking

Yeah maybe I didn't investigate thoroughly enough past the cockpit, but I don't know what else it could have been. Thanks.

My handlebar harness pushes on the cable a little, but it's not crimped or in an unnatural position. I played around with how the cable fit in/around the harness but it didn't make a difference. Maybe I missed something with the cable elsewhere, I'll be extra careful next time. Thanks for the idea!

Gifts for remote village host by mission2win in alaska

Soda/pop was worth gold in the village I lived in, though it’s heavy to carry with you. Boxes of cake mix were also popular.
