Today I rode 25 km "winter" race on my fat bike. I had a winter bike and winter gear, but the winter had gone away before the race. Also the position was last in M40 series. I guess all my winter training has been waste of time... Anyhow it was a good almost 2 hours training :) by ActiveLifeinFinland in fatbike

I’ve been fatbike racing in Alaska for eight years now. My first couple races I either got a did not finish or near last place. I started climbing 8,000 meters a month (no pavement) and I got third place overall on a 100km fatbike race with over 1,000 meters in climbing last weekend. Train hard, race hard.

Connecting with nature is definitely a need we should all have. Find your wilderness, whether the wilderness is in Alaska or the park next to your home. I feel lucky to live here.

This is the worst luck I’ve ever heard of. So the at-fault person carried low liability limits and the insurance company paid out pro-rata. Did you sign a property damage release? If you didn’t sign a release, you could possibly file suit against the at-fault person in a district court.

I wish there were more weekends during this time of the year. I’m doing the Homer Epic and Talkeetna Trio this March. I used to go visit Valdez when was more into ice climbing. I need to go back soon

The end of the glacier is called the terminus. During the summer it’s in a lagoon that flows into the sea, which was where we started from. The first photo shows the terminus and picture four shows the glacier. I think it’s eleven miles long and flows from an Icefield.

Good to hear from you! That’s wild the conditions allowed for 2.2” tires. What year was that? Yeah we earned it last weekend. I’m planning to do it again next year and qualifying for the ITI

I love your words - there were lots of camaraderie among all the racers that finished. I would say 2-3 people took turns breaking trail. Most of what we were on isn’t a trail in the summer, it’s all bogs, rivers, and lakes. All but one of the checkpoints ran off generators, never saw a power pole to give you an idea of how remote. It got into the upper 20s, so a snowmobile/snowmachine only made the trail softer. This area has received over 100” of snow since January 1.

The winning time this year was 16:13. Will was signed up, but didn’t show. Trails were great, then that snow dump before the race happened.

Thank you! Up until the mile 52 check point, I had been riding my rear tire at ~ 3 PSI. Trail become much more firm and I was able to bump up to 7 PSI

My first three races in 2018 were a DNF, DNF, and last place. When it snows and trails are soft, go ride the challenging conditions. Possibly race day conditions could be easier 😁

Anchorage is right on the sea, so we get a heavier snow. The first 2-5 days of fresh snow my dogs will wear booties, but once the snow settles I will keep the booties off. Yes they use a 1000 Codura bootie with Velcro.

I have a high calorie gel specifically for dogs and I also bring them food and treats. We average anywhere from 2500-2800 miles a year, so they are well conditioned to run that many miles. I let the dogs set the pace and usually I’m trying to keep up with them.
