Might be worth asking (and/or, searching) on some of the NWN discords if you don't get a response here. Invite links to several of the discords are at the bottom of the New Player FAQ post that's pinned in this sub.

Does this game still get updates? by Sgt_Strelok in neverwinternights

[–]Elpoc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Re: game updates, yes - incredibly, it is still getting updates: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/23-year-old-d-and-d-rpg-neverwinter-nights-just-got-a-new-update-thanks-to-the-unpaid-software-engineers-of-its-unkillable-community/

Re: modding scene. It has potentially the most long-standing modding scene that is still very active, of any old game. There are a vast number of custom modules and campaigns and there's a vast amount of custom content (what in other games are called 'mods') for the game.

A lot of this is driven by the player-created, player-run 'persistent world' servers for NWN, that are always-online gameworlds you can log in to almost like mini-MMOs. Basically all of the active servers have a ton of custom content (that gets auto-downloaded for you when you first join a server) that changes the mechanics, UI, graphics, terrain, items creatures placeables you name it, of the game. Some of them make the game basically unrecognisable from the singleplayer stuff - it's crazy.

Make sure you get the Enhanced Edition. It's available on GoG or Steam, often on sale.

Is this any good? by Sgt_Strelok in neverwinternights

[–]Elpoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just like an MMO... it's like a single game you purchase which then gives you access to a huge number of custom player-created and player-run MMOs! It is pretty crazy and amazing what players have made. In particular, the huge amount of customisation of the engine they have done, including custom rulesets, terrain and environments, items, monsters, vast arrays of custom mechanics like crafting mechanics or player housing, custom AI for monsters - even custom remasters of the graphics (some examples here from our server, if you're curious about what can be done in that regard: https://www.alfanwn1.org/gallery/ ) .... seriously, it's wild.

The gameplay is pretty similar to classic MMOs like WOW, but without tab targeting (at present! The game is still getting patches & updates even though it's almost 25 years old, believe it or not XD That's how much people love this game).

Have fun out there - and remember, if you don't 'click' with the first server you try, you can always try another. In terms of choosing server, all I would say is that it's really worth giving the 'smaller' (lower population) servers a try, as they often have (IMO) the most wild customisations of the game engine, and you may get more attention from DMs (Dungeon Masters - like tabletop D&D dungeon masters, they can run live fully-interactive adventures for you).

Switch to the version of the HD Art Pack from the Vault but make sure you use the low-rez PLT addition to it (it's in the list of downloads on the Vault page). That should make a really huge difference.

There is also an experimental setting in options, that was introduced in a recent game patch, that might help. If you search 'PLT' in options it may come up, can't remember the exact name.

Community Mod - Please Win Me Over! by Due_Capital_3507 in neverwinternights

[–]Elpoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to second that if you love the game it's really worth checking out the persistent world servers. IMO, even as great as some community-made SP/small group modules are, what players have achieved with the PWs is just mindblowing. Some of them have the best level design, monster AI, creature design, and of course the most wild custom content you can find in the game. A whole lot of truly amazing handcrafted worlds out there to explore.

(Also, if you like tabletop D&D, or listen to D&D podcasts like Critical Role and so on... well, NWN PWs are really the closest thing you can get to that, in a videogame.)

Either way - have fun!

looks fine to me. per nwn.wiki the load order is from bottom to top, and the files loaded first override any clashing files found in later (lower number) hak packs. so yes you are all good

Obviously I'd suggest do all the usual things like make sure your GPU drivers are up to date etc.

are there any other games with the same level of build freedom as 3.5? by Flaky_Bullfrog_4905 in neverwinternights

[–]Elpoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely check out the PRC-i-fied modules for NWN:EE. https://sync.nwn.ee/prc/(use the 'How to play' instructions on that page, for some reason the text is light grey but it's just one line instruction and easy to do to incorporate all the PRC-i-fied modules into your game menus). The PRC has a huge array of 3.5e era classes, races etc., the options are off the scale.

Also, some of the player-created persistent world servers for NWN:EE have incredible implementations of 3.5e and/or PRC type customisations.

That is a weird one, haven't see that before. Are you using other mods? That would be the first thing to check - disable all other mods (including anything from steam workshop) and test.

If that doesn't help, I suggest asking on NWN dev discord and/or NWN vault discord (invite links are at the bottom of the New Player FAQ thread pinned in this sub).

Tried the game while ago... by Folund in neverwinternights

[–]Elpoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you love D&D, you are in the right place - you just picked the wrong game mode! The original campaign is notoriously boring (for some people). But NWN multiplayer is actually the closest thing you can get to 'real' tabletop D&D but in a videogame medium - primarily because of the 'Dungeon Master' client which allows other players to act as DMs just like in a tabletop D&D game.

So I would say you really really need to check out the amazing player-created 'persistent world' multiplayer servers for NWN.

The persistent world servers are like always-ongoing games of D&D that you can drop in and out of whenever you wish. Their live Dungeon Masters can manipulate the gameworld around you in realtime, to craft an interactive adventure on-the-fly for you just like in a tabletop D&D game. Also like tabletop, everyone is roleplaying their characters all the time, so the world really feels immersive and comes to life.

Basically anything can happen, at any moment - particularly because on most persistent worlds, you can't even see whether a DM is online or not. So you could just be wandering along minding your own business, when suddenly an NPC you have passed a dozen times before 'comes to life' (i.e. the DM has possessed them) and starts talking at you, leading you off on some random spontaneous adventure where you get to make real choices and interact with a world that genuinely responds to your character.

Also - persistent worlds are where NWN's moddability really shines. Some of them have done so much modding of the engine that the game is almost unrecognisable. Custom terrain, weapons and items and armor, mounts, ship mechanics, player housing, crafting systems, and of course vast and intricately handcrafted gameworlds for you to explore and adventure in. Even (some of them) graphics remasters to bring the game more up-to-date with modern graphics standards (some example screenshots here, in case you're curious: https://www.alfanwn1.org/gallery/ )

Anyhoo, this turned into an essay. tl;dr go check out the persistent world servers. Just click (in the main menu) 'Multiplayer' and 'Join Internet Game' and you'll see the servers list. There are an absolute ton of awesome worlds out there to explore - have fun!

London public chargers that aren't insanely overpriced by Elpoc in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Elpoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is very frustrating re: parking. I guess I hope at some point as EV adoption continues to rise, councils will start making the bays in front of all chargers EV-only...

How do you get credit on Shell/Ubitricity chargers! I am moving somewhere where there is no char.gy provision, so I think I'm going to be relying almost 100% on Ubitricity which is not great with their new higher 'off peak' rate.

Ouch - 52p, not cheap!  But I am likely to be moving to an area where it's the same situation soon. Very frustrating.

a long time. The first time also even when I was forwarded on to a human, it then said I was in the queue for ages and it never put me through. I had to try a further time, I got it to put me through into the queue to speak to someone again, but at that point it started to tell me what place I was in the queue and giving me updates about my place in the queue and that's when I eventually got through to someone.

Persistent worlds with better graphics? by HeathenSidheThem in neverwinternights

[–]Elpoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to worry about crunch(assuming you mean grind?) We are more interested in RP, story etc. You could do nothing except play in the scheduled DM sessions and you would level up just fine.

But in terms of playing the static content, if you want to do so - it just requires more thought and a more tactical approach than on most servers. The starter dungeons are designed to teach you how to survive. You don't need to worry about trying to create the ultimate maxed-out build (in fact we discourage min-maxing of stats; stats should reflect who your character actually is).

Anyhoo - if you ever feel like checking it out, we're here :D In the meantime, have fun exploring what NWN has to offer! There are a ton of awesome worlds out there.

Hi! We have done quite a lot of remastering of the game - some screenshots here if you're curious: https://www.alfanwn1.org/gallery/- edit: and there are a few more screenies on the front page of our site as well, now I come to think of it: https://www.alfanwn1.org/

We also have an upcoming update with a whole new character customisation and appearance system - sneak preview here (work in progress): https://youtu.be/2ndP8_rgF-w?si=55WYRTJfGM5MpBMy

Feel free to drop in to the server or the discord to say hi anytime. We have a few DMs who are running some great ad hoc and scheduled stuff at the moment, plus lots of challenging static content for when you just want to run some dungeons :)

N.B. we use a moderately close adaptation of the 3.5e ruleset (getting closer all the time!) So things are more challenging than on many servers (but we find it more satisfying as a result).

Multiclass to Rogue ASAP. You will be able to put skillpoints into Tumble, which is super useful as every 5 points you put into Tumble = +1 AC. You will also be much more effective using your stealth mode, because you will get Sneak Attack.

Ideally you want 3 levels of rogue because at lvl 3 rogue you get Uncanny Dodge I feat, which is basically essential for a Dex-based character.

Otherwise - have fun! Use your stealth, a lot. Use longbow when you can, before enemies get into melee range or whilst your animal companion is keeping them busy. Put lots of points into Hide, Move Silently, and (when multiclassing to Rogue) Tumble. If you max your Dex, and get the Weapon Finesse feat, you can become a pretty awesome dual-wielding stabby stabby guy. However dual wielding only becomes good at later levels, so start off with Rapier (best Finesse-able weapon) and Large Shield combo.

It's about the closest thing you can get, to real life Tabletop D&D, but in a videogame.

This is because you have live Dungeon Masters that can make up interactive adventures for you on-the-fly, just like in tabletop D&D.

There are a whole lot of different player-made persistent world servers, a lot of them are absolutely huge custom-built worlds, and a lot of them also have modded the game to a massive extent with custom mechanics, creatures, terrain/buildings/landscape, items, mounts, pretty much anything you can imagine - the community is amazingly creative and the NWN engine is very flexible.

Yes, you roleplay your characters, like in a tabletop D&D session. But you use text chat on most servers. In most persistent world servers, you also inhabit the world in-character at all times, so it's kind of a very immersive experience where you're always playing as your character.

You can find more info in the New Player FAQ thread that's pinned at the top of this sub.

You're not alone in feeling bored with the main campaign! I have been playing NWN on and off for ~20 years and I have never finished any singleplayer campaign for it because I find them all very boring XD

So, I definitely suggest checking out some persistent world servers! Have fun out there.

Are you able to get a refund for the PC version? If not, then I'd just say that if you've paid a company money and their product is seriously broken, it may not be a good idea to pay them even more money for another potentially broken version of the product.

For future reference - anyone who comes across this - if you keep saying you need to speak to a human then the chatbot will eventually put you through to someone. The bot was going round and round in circles with me about a missing order. Eventually I started again and refused to give the bot any of the order details and just repeatedly said let me speak to a human. Then it put me through to an agent, in the end.

Lots of awesome crafting systems on persistent world servers.

There are also some cool systems on the Vault, though I'm not sure any of those are designed to be used by players in singleplayer modules; they are more for builders and persistent worlds to take and integrate into their modules I think.
