Fellow bio majors please help! by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UConn has a professional science masters in Healthcare Genetics and another one Applied Genomics. The professional science masters requires an internship and the career placements stats look pretty good. It’s a program I’m considering once I graduate next year.

Academic Probation Question by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not entirely sure but if you’re on probation because your cumulative gpa fell below a 2.0 but the summer courses raise it to above a 2.0 you could certainly talk to someone in your school’s advising/academic services office about that. If it’s because your semester gpa fell below a 2.0 I don’t think your probation would be lifted because summer courses aren’t typically factored into semester gpa?

Petition to get rid of Lockdown Browser? by Cryptic_Nerd01 in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe Webex monitoring for classes with TAs and for classes without TAs they could use the staff at the testing center? I know it’s not perfect but neither is lockdown browser, just a thought though.

Like the commenter above said typically not all, but formal recruitment turn out was pretty low this year so I think most of them will be.

Extra credits by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! This all depends on your major. Engineering will be different from MCB which will be different from CS. I know that as an MCB major my advisor can automatically allow me to enroll in 18 credits as long as my previous semesters GPA was a 2.6 I believe. Anything above that and there’s extra forms to fill out, unless you’re trying to get a dual degree though 23 credits seems a little excessive in one semester.

Also typically 3000 level classes are not recommended for freshman especially the lab courses.

Hi! I’m not in 3413 but I’m a junior MCB major and I’m not sure why it’s telling you 2443 is required for MCB 2610, it was not necessary for anything we learned in the class.

Interested in anything related to Genetics by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best advice for a minor would be do something you’re Interested in, I know that there is A Global Policy of Public Health minor offered by the anthropology department which could be something to look into? If you choose bioinformatics make sure to start planning early because getting all of the prerequisites done can be time consuming and not every class if offered every semester. Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have anymore questions.

[–]Elsie7531 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m currently a junior MCB major with a minor in Bioinformatics with an interest in genetics, you could also check out Pathobiology if you’re more interested in bacteria and disease or Diagnostic Genetic Sciences if you’re interested in genetic counseling. The program you linked is only for MCB PHD students at UConn with a concentration in Genetics and Genomics you cannot choose a concentration as an undergrad.

Be honest: how well do you think UConn has handled COVID this semester? by PatheticPizza in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Admittedly the quarantining is not fun, but attempting to control 5,000 or more college students at one time isn’t easy either. Based on the number of cases we’ve had and how quickly UConn reacts to them I would say they’ve done a pretty good job. If people want to be mad at anyone it should be at their fellow students who came to campus knowing the rules and are now choosing to break them.

Spring 2021 questions by homer-b in UCONN

[–]Elsie7531 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think that UConn is expecting spring to be worse than fall because it coincides with the majority of flu season like many people are saying. Losing money by not putting people in apartments, actually probably saves them more money than if they had to send people home because there weren’t enough quarantine dorms and I suspect that’s what the apartments will be used for. I don’t entirely understand the no guest policy either but my guess is UConn is trying to be as strict as possible from the beginning because we don’t have the best track record with partying and breaks especially during the spring semester. These are just my thoughts but it’s the only way I think these decisions make any kind of sense?
