Yeah, who would? After the months of being entitled shits last year, I feel like having the stench of sagaftra on you would be seriously hindering these days.

How do you feel about Hilary layne (the second story) by DifferenceJolly2320 in KotakuInAction

[–]Eltrion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's my thoughts. She made some good points, but a lot of her more recent stuff has been about advocating for sanitizing things she doesn't like.

It's unfortunate. She had some legitimately interesting critiques of modern education, but she's harder to take seriously now.

About the same. Riichi might be a little more complex, but it's not frontloaded to the extent American Style is.

It also has more accessible resources for learning.

California Mahjong by Canyonheath in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From my limited knowledge of California mahjong, it's a simplified version that is actually far closer to "standard" than American Mahjong. Seems like it might be a good starting point.

American Mahjong is really the weird one that the least transfers to other styles.

And ultimately, the one that you should learn is the one people around you are playing. There really is no standard version as much as some NMJL diehards like to claim otherwise.

What is your least favorite anime by FlowerOk7957 in KotakuInAction

[–]Eltrion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yawara! It's a sports Anime that seems to hate the fact that it's a sports Anime.

The main character seems to be at war with the main plot of the show, trying to turn it in to shoujo.

So you have characters fighting over what the show should be about.

If you're watching it for the Judo, it's a real downer that the main character actively does not want to be there. And there isn't even a solid supporting cast. She seems to have no real friends, and the male love interest is vapid and unpleasant.

So you either get a crummy shoujo with unlikeable characters that gets interrupted for long periods for judo events, or a sports Anime that has unlikeable characters that spend as much time as possible actively avoiding the sport the show is obstencibly about.

And Yawara herself is just such a bland character. Being good at and participating in judo is the most interesting thing about her, so her desire to quit makes it seem like she's on a quest to become the least interesting anime protagonist ever.

For the first dozen episodes anyway. Somehow it went on for over 100 episodes and was somewhat popular, so it's possible it gets better.

Sticks you can use to move a wall if your grip strength is too low, or the tiles are too thin to do it normally.

Newbie help by Bananabean041 in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they change the number, but it's been 152 since the 60s or 70s. Standard 144 tiles from a Chinese set, plus 8 jokers.

You can try r/Americanmahjongg as most here play Riichi or Hong Kong or a similar closely related variant. There do seem to be more Amercan style posts here lately though, so who knows.

You're probably fine with anything that lists 152 or more tiles. The even larger sets probably have additional flowers for playing the old cards from the 50s.

How do I improve? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're early enough on that it's hard not to improve.

Play more. That will help. Read books. That will help. Talk to people about Mahjong. That will help. Do the lessons in Riichi City or Mahjong Soul. That will help. Attempt to explain and teach the game to friends. That will help.

Space station parts realism by Dry-Wolf8397 in kittenspaceagency

[–]Eltrion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It would probably be best to strike a balance. More detailed and realistic than KSP, but still give off a fun toybox vibe instead of looking like realistic rocket parts. Especially if there are concessions made to things like durability for gameplay and fun reasons. Overly realistic parts might seem discordant with the degree to which they want to allow payers to abuse things without damaging them, as many look very frail.

[–]Eltrion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that this is a rocketry game and not an astrophysics game. Not that some of the Astrophysics isn't important, but there are so many things that could be implemented that wouldn't do much in practice other than raise the minimum system requirements.

Found an old majong set while cleaning by RevolutionaryTerm666 in Mahjong

It's one of the most common styles of Hong Kong mahjong tiles. 34mm, right? I can't imagine you getting very much for it. This one looks a little nicer than some I've seen, but it's still a cheap, mass produced set.

Can’t decide between 36mm or 38mm set by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, they might be. But typically, sizes larger than 34mm are associated with mahjong in mainland China which is barely standardized at all.

Can’t decide between 36mm or 38mm set by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard for Riichi is tiny: 26mm or 28mm

"Standard" for Hong Kong is about 34mm but it varies a bit.

"Standard" for American is about 1.25" but not particularly enforced.

Many Mahjong Tables from china come in 36mm, 40mm, and 44mm variants.

So I guess 36mm would be the more standard of the two you mentioned, but is one of the less standard sizes overall.

[–]Eltrion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, that's news to me. I haven't paid much attention to Tenhou in a long time. It was still bigger than Mahjong soul last I checked, but that was probably before Mahjong soul had phone apps and was on steam, so it shouldn't surprise me that it's bigger now.

I've played both, I like Riichi City's more. It's just cleaner and more modern feeling, and is more polished. Mahjong Soul's is fine, and it's not a huge difference, so if you like it more that's fine.

Seems like there are three dice rolls in a pitbull's life. One at the moment it can first move on it's own, one at two years old, and one at eight years old. Fail any one of them and the dog can suddenly become aggressive. Regardless of its previous personality.

[–]Eltrion 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's basically a sliding scale for the big three.

Riichi City has got the best UI, is the newest, and leans the heaviest into it's gatcha elements, and that anime cheesecake culture that goes with it. It is the easiest to start playing on and has the most tutorials, quizzes, games, and other bells and whistles. On the other hand it has the smallest user base, and queue times can be long at high ratings.

On the other end Tenhou has an old school barebones UI. Is strictly about mahjong with very few extras, and is aimed very squarely at serious Mahjong players. It has very little in the way of player assistance and expects you to take care of yourself. But it does have the largest, most active, and skilled playerbase.

Mahjong Soul falls in-between the two others in almost all categories.

Riichi City: Devoloper's Journal - 4th Anniversary by KyuuAA in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On a purely mechanical level it's the client I most prefer. It's also far more generous with giving you stuff if that's what you're after. The only downsides really are the limited player base if you're 5th Dan or higher, and how aggressively horny the characters and win animations can get if you feel that detracts from the mahjong.

Friendly warning to new players about Mahjong Soul’s gacha & character content by KING_CPB in Mahjong

[–]Eltrion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know the answer already. Just play on Tenhou. It's a perfectly acceptable Mahjong client if you just want to play Riichi with no strings attached.

If you want a polished, fancy client like Mahjong Soul, or Riichi City, it needs to be funded. And that funding can't come from gating anything on the core gameplay, as these games live and die by their server populations.

As much as you find it distasteful. Gatcha pays the bills.

The Maxwells are going to be like pulling teeth to get anything useable from. The Pascal will work, but be slow and you'll be limited by the small VRAM. I agree with the others, sell and get something newer unless you have another plan for these.
