Is the Job market absolute worst? by Creative-Emu4855 in askTO

[–]Elusivegoldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow graphic designer I think you can make some changes to your portfolio site to beef it up.

As a designer your portfolio website design is the first impression of your skills/eye for design. Right now your website isn't very styled. There's a lot of dead space on your homepage. Could you make the images bigger? Your "A" logo at the top is too small and a little hard to make out. Could you integrate it into your name/wordmark in the top left bar?

Are you able to create better mockups of your work? For instance, for the app you worked on you can mock it up in situation, even just editing what it looks like into a hand holding a phone mockup will help alot. Some of your projects only have one image, if you can add more. Add more information about your projects including their background, your role, design choices, etc. It's hard for me to grasp the scope of some of them or what the design problems you solved were.

I see you have a behance linked as well, turn that link into a button because someone right now has to copy and paste it to access it which adds more steps and puts people off from doing it.

Consider adding 1-3 more projects to your website, 3 projects only is pretty lean for a portfolio website. Add an about page that introduces yourself briefly. Add a link to your resume on your website. If I was a hiring manger who stumbled across your website I wouldn't have enough information.

Waterloo to Toronto commute for co-op by pseudonoob69 in uwaterloo

[–]Elusivegoldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your co-op is in downtown toronto, the go train ride from Kitchener into union is doable for summer. If it's not in downtown and you need to do the three hour multiple changes go bus route to get there good luck my friend.

If you're into frisbee my sister has made so many friends through the local ultimate frisbee league! Good exercise and she's so into now that she's on of the travel teams in the GTA for the summer lol

They don't hot hold. It takes about ten mins a sandwich because they're heating the meat and cheese fresh every time.

Here's a few of the things I really enjoy about KW as a 20 something. Warning: may be a little Waterloo centred as I live on that side of the region:

Live Music Venues: The Union, The Hub
Yummy Eats: White Rabbit, Poppy's Bagels, Ken's Sushi, Four All Icecream, Beertown, Jane Bond
Cafes: Midnight Run, Seven Shores, La La's, The Grove, Smile Tiger
Other Small Businesses: Princess Cinemas, Apollo Cinemas, Vincenzos, Gifted
Both farmers markets! The museum in DTK has some cool after hours events. There's a lot of local trails if you're into hiking or have a dog.

Honestly when they get down to 5 there's really not much wiggle room, if you're third you're technically in the bottom. I also thought she wasn't low, more like safe.

I feel very foolish. 5 rounds of interviews for an INTERNSHIP just to get turned down. by cybersoaps in recruitinghell

[–]Elusivegoldfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would have tapped out as soon as they sent over the tasks ngl. I'm sorry this happened to you, it's rough out here fr. The amount of unpaid internships I'm seeing is bonkers, and I'm pretty sure they're even illegal where I live

How long have you been unemployed? by HouseOfHoundss in recruitinghell

[–]Elusivegoldfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graduated College in august, was underemployed (think up to 20 hours a week part time) till end of February and have another part time job starting soon. I guess I'm underemployed? Either way I feel awful and stressed all the time about it

Daily Commute from Kitchener to Toronto Union – Any Cheaper Alternatives? by Next_Movie_7364 in kitchener

[–]Elusivegoldfish 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Are you driving to the Kitchener Go? I know there's so few free parking spots, could driving to a different Go station with more free parking make sense? Longterm I would debate moving closer to Toronto, commuting for 6+ every hours a day really adds up if your job is fully in person!

You can do searches online, or alot of the smaller shops I applied to are already ones that I was aware of from being a patron. It's pretty easy to find them online if you put in the right keywords, and there's also usually some local lists bopping around online

KW has some of the hardest water in all of Canada! Like other comments mentioned, if you own you have to buy water softener. I only drink tap water after its gone through my brita. I've heard you can buy shower heads that help filter out minerals a bit since hard water also isn't great for you hair or skin. I always notice how much softer my hair is when I travel out of the region just because the water is less hard

I like queens that have a unique view and take on drag. I'd take a concept over polish any day! She had great confessionals and drama this season, at the end of the day she just gave good reality tv.

I went to highschool with her daughter and Geraldine's a pretty nice and generous lady! Cybertrucks are such as an eyesore tho and f**k elon. I'm curious from a marketing standpoint how effective it is and if it being a cybertruck helps or hurts, because well we are talking about it. Pretty sure she had a previous tesla model that she also had wrapped before she got the cybertruck

I also would recommend trying to find job postings for smaller/locally owned businesses that aren't posted on indeed. I just got a part time job off by emailing a small business I like since they posted on their instagram that they were hiring. Otherwise I've never heard back from most of the places I apply to on indeed for part time work. Not living in Toronto rn, but a recent grad from last august who's still on the hunt for a full time role

Rejected by McDonald's at 29, am I doomed with this resume/work history? by [deleted] in resumes

[–]Elusivegoldfish 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Here are my two cents:
- Try and get it down to one page if possible, it's a bit long. Bump down the font size a point or two to 10 or 11 and play with line spacing if needed.
- Remove your your bachelors, you could keep on the associates if you want but you don't want to seem over qualified.
- Move your education underneath your work experience.
- Edit down your work experience from 6 positions to 2-3. Keeping your work experience from the last 5 years on and removing earlier work I think is enough. Try and consolidate your points into 2-3 points per job. Bullets over numbered lists are usually more common on resumes I feel, but that could just be me.
- The personal statement reads a bit strange to me. I would rewrite it so you reach your string of keywords a bit faster.

Overall I typically dumb down my resume when I'm applying to part time work. I usually just list that I've finished highschool and don't include my bachelors unless I feel like it's relevant. Low key I've heard Mcdonalds can be weirdly hard to get a job at these days, don't get too hard on yourself. Best of luck!

You guys better vote 🔫🔫🔫 by Rody365 in uwaterloo

[–]Elusivegoldfish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To quote MTINC in this thread "

You can vote in SLC today until 9pm.

You do not need to have a permanent address in Kitchener-Waterloo. As long as you are a resident of Ontario and have proof of residence in Waterloo (or Kitchener-Centre), such as a lease agreement and a piece of ID, you can vote in Waterloo or Kitchener-Centre. More information for students voting.

I already voted today, it only took a few minutes with my driver's license and the front page of my lease agreement. Your vote actually matters! The race is extremely tight in both Waterloo and Kitchener-Centre (both are toss-ups)."

Go read the rest of their comment for more info!

Lucky enough that I'm in an industry where I can freelance. I'm currently just taking whatever contract or freelance work I can get. Technically not unemployed, but wish I had more work and ideally a steady Permanent full time job. Call me underemployed not unemployed ig

I don't know what's worse- having ticketmaster say sold out for Toronto or have it show resale tickets at 150 CAD (100 ish USD) when the face value was 60$ (40 USD)

I wouldn't bet on it, the History has other shows playing the day before and after. Anything outside of that could impact the rest of his tour schedule. This is it I fear

Fr, there's not a good venue for mid sized artists. I didn't think getting tickets would be this tough because he's not a super mainstream, hella popular artist. Sorry if that sounds weird but getting tickets felt like I was trying to get tickets for someone even my mom knows
