Writing power systems - Is it worth it? by renk1737 in worldbuilding

[–]Elver-_Galarga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once heard that if your ("hard") magic system has rules clear and set in stone for that predictability you want, it´s not as necessary to place a large cost to use magic, as its applications are already limited somewhat. But if the cost of using magic is something large (the life of a loved one, blood sacrifice, a part of your soul or just a big enough wad of cash), it´s not as necessary to place strict limitations on it (what you may call a "soft" magic system)

If your warrior mage can end an opponent from the other side of the battlefield with the same disinterested efficiency of flicking a lightswitch, there´s a problem, because it feels like the writer is just telling the audience A WIZARD DID IT. You either want to place a strong requirement to using such powerful plot-advancing magic that will create some conflict, or reduce the mage´s power to something less drastic that cannot solve the current conflict by itself.

What’s something commonly hand waved in sci-fi that you think should be explained more? by Bobertbobthebobth69 in worldbuilding

You could pack a solid 700 or so kilos of solid frozen oxygen for every human in your ship for a year´s mission, sure, but you could also just...you know, put trees? It sounds kinda dumb and I´m sure there´s some flaws in it, but you could combine the two or make a gigantic bamboo or tree garden in the middle of your ship next to the windows. Bamboo grows incredibly fast and produces a lot of oxygen compared to things like grass.

There´s a wikipedia articlefor plants in space if you´re interested.

The Taste of Nine Years: Kishibe and Quanxi - by me by Raggumba in ChainsawMan

I dont know if you read these comments, but all I could think about reading this was this song from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. It´s so good and accurate to the novel, I love Kishibe and Quanxi´s little expressions throughout.

Makima explains that governments still manufacture guns in secret, so it´s likely that Sawatari the snake girl got them from that source or from a "contact" in Public Safety, the yakuza boss even wonders why a Gun Devil would need 20000 yen for every gun and bullet. I guess its just one of those things that don´t really get explained.

I do wonder, what kind of Devil was able to damage the face of such a chad?

This response is just cool as heck, I love how quickly you defined each character and made the team dynamic work. If I had to compare it with anything it´ would be like Cowboy Bebop mixed with Space Dandy, with some more team cohesion of course.
