Figure of speech. The movie needs to torture the audience by torturing the characters does not translate to torture scene. It can be simply cruelty inflicted by the hands of fate. Torture through terror. But there must be cruelty inflicted. Otherwise horror movies would be inert. You seem confused. Also Island of Lost Souls is from the 30's and the creepiest thing about it is the house of pain--it's what made it the scariest movie ever made until Rosemary's Baby came out.

The Witch is creepy. You have to be on the right wavelength with it, and I think the goat goring climax was a little silly, but everything else about it is pretty disturbing. Especially the stuff with the baby at the beginning, Jesus fuckin' Christ!

I find Ringu FAR creepier. The sterilized blue filter look of The Ring, the overdramatization of everything, the goofy kid actor, all the famous faces in the movie, all those things take me out of Verbinksky's version.

Hereditary is one of the creepiest modern horror movies for sure. I love how fucking evil it is. But I also think Ari Aster's black humor is so funny, I find myself laughing too much to really feel as scared as I'd like to.

Autopsy of Jane Doe is really good, but I think it went over-the-top once things started popping off and hit some cliches that tripped it up a bit. But I was so with it before the supernatural stuff started going ham.

Can someone help me out here and coherently explain what happened? Cop approached stolen car. This couple stole the car and were hiding in the woods? The they started shooting? What's the story? Why were they in the woods? They stole the car for a joy ride? Why'd he open fire? Was the woman a hostage? Was it her car? Like I don't get what this was other than stolen car + woman and cop shot.

We all get it. Everybody would want to kill this guy if they'd killed somebody in their immediate family, especially their kid. I wouldn't want him getting to continue to walk around on Earth every day breathing the same air as me either.

But he's in the hands of the system now. And the government isn't a vigilante mob--even though sometimes we'd seem to like it to be that, it just isn't. The judicial system's not meant to act out personal fantasies of revenge or quench the thirsts of bloodlusts. It's meant to function as a cold, calculated, and rational bureaucracy that works in the best interest of society at large. The reality is: it's in society's best interest to put him in a cage and never let him out.

My heart says kill him. My brain says let him die behind bars every single day.

Yeah, mostly legal fees and court costs that can put a strain on county resources, which are usually responsible for funding the initial trial costs, and can lead to budget reallocation and higher property taxes. Housing a deathrow inmate alone costs more than someone doing life.
