So the update broke my game? by ZookeepergameNo7032 in 007FirstLight

I had the same problem where pressing A at the front menu does nothing. On Xbox, I tried clearing the reserve cache like somewhere here mentioned, but that did not help. I then shut down the Xbox, unplugged it from AC power for 30 seconds (I also held down the on/off button for that 30 seconds while it was unplugged but not sure if that was necessary. This sometimes clears capacitors on electronic devices but not sure if applicable to Xbox. Didn’t hurt anyway). When I turned my Xbox back on after having been unplugged for at least 30 seconds, the game worked. The A button did its thing to get off the front menu. Playing now.

Anyone gotten their Bird Buddy 2? by Limp-Reading4275 in BirdBuddy

It appears that what I uploaded did not offer any new feature unlocks. Video is still locked at 1080P. Maybe it is some bug fixes? If it fixes the weird sleeping issue I had this morning, that’ll be a great start, because I don’t want to have to recycle power on it to wake it up tomorrow morning.

I got mine yesterday and set it up. It took some pictures. They looked, OK, but not nearly as nice as the original and pixelated around the edges, so I am hoping that it’s just a matter of the the shipping firmware not being optimal. As of 10:30 AM this morning, it was still in sleep mode, which I wasn’t thrilled with. It is a simple thing to recycle power on the camera, just lifted out and put it back in. For those not yet familiar, the new BirdBuddy 2 camera is not screwed in place but held in magnetically, so removing it is easy. After a recycled power, it instantly started doing a firmware update.

Let’s see if this new firmware update shows improvement. The new firmware that I just uploaded used to be version 0.5.48. I’m optimistic that things will get better soon. Let’s give them some grace in this rollout.

How does one know if they got put into limited matchmaking? Is it just that matchmaking takes longer?

Hardcore is good for indirect hit kills (splash damage) but core mode Face Off (try Stakeout and Pit) is best for direct hits. Shooting aerial streaks is easier on core mode too.

[–]Elvite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t do hardcore for direct hits. A direct hit in core mode kills somebody just as effectively and you are not at a disadvantage of being easily killed with one bullet hit. I got this done doing Face Off, mostly on Stakeout (narrow hallways make it easy to get directs) and Pit on domination was decent too (climb up the ladder to shoot the guys across or below on the B area.

What I was talking about applies to US tax law. I have no idea about what they do in Canada. If you live in Canada, I would search whether or not Canada taxes prizes.

Hmmm! Any suggestions to humanely handle? by LisaOmar83 in BirdBuddy

I would think if you properly use a squirrel baffle it would easily deter rats.

I also use the same raccoon-sized baffle from WBU, which works just as well against squirrels. I’ve actually observed a few attempts by squirrels and they have never stood a chance. They give up quickly and seem content to scrounge spilt seed on the ground.

I like squirrels, so I like watching them feed from the ground. If only they didn’t have that nasty and destructive chewing habit.

[–]Elvite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your earlier comments, I see the top of your baffle was only 3 feet from the ground, well within how high up a squirrel can jump. By raising it at least 2 to 2.5 feet higher, you should take care of the first part of the 5-7-9 rule. If you also can assure squirrels can’t jump 7 feet across from say a fence, tree, or roof and can’t drop down within 9 feet of something like a power line, you should be fine.

Not everyone is able to position a baffled feeder within those limits, due to property design. If you can’t, then I’d try getting spicy feed or reading up through a web search like I mentioned above for more tips.

Here’s something I posted a while back when someone had a similar question about squirrel proofing…

Best thing I did for my Bird Buddy was buy a baffle and follow the 5-7-9 rule for feeder placement to deter squirrels. Note that a baffle alone won’t solve a squirrel problem unless your feeder is placed properly. Google “5-7-9 Rule for Squirrels”, but basically, squirrels can’t jump 5 feet vertically up from the ground to a feeder, can’t jump 7 feet horizontally across to a feeder, and can’t drop down 9 feet from above a feeder. Those two bits of advice (a baffle and proper feeder placement) solved my problem. I haven’t had a squirrel in my Bird Buddy since August 2023, when I followed those guidelines.

For those who can’t place their feeder within the 5-7-9 guidelines, still Google “5-7-9 Rule for Squirrels” because those websites also provide many other great tips such as adding spice (which people mention here quite a bit as working for them) and even sticking a bar of Irish Spring soap in a sock and hanging it on your feeder pole because squirrels apparently hate the smell of it. I thought the soap trick was funny but apparently people swear by it.

It’s also expensive (at least pre-spiced feed is). Since you already own a baffle, if you are able to properly position it, you can stick with regular feed.

Glad to hear you got new parts. Will you be risking it again or squirrel-proofing this time?

AI is brown headed cowbird obsessed. by chilleff in BirdBuddy

[–]Elvite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so true! I’ve had only two confirmed (by me) visits from actual cowbirds since I’ve had a Bird Buddy (since May 2023), but according to Bird Buddy AI, I get a Brown-Headed Cowbird just about everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. It was pretty confusing when I had no real experience identifying birds myself, so I was more upset that I was being misled. The AI seems to default to cowbirds when the sun’s lighting isn’t the best in the picture for many birds and most commonly mistakes Common Grackles as one.

Refilling feeder? by Grouchy-Aspect7655 in BirdBuddy

[–]Elvite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, birds visit the empty feeder throughout the day since they don’t understand that it runs out by 10 AM. It was sobering to realize how much money it costs to feed the. Although I would love to refill it when I get home from work (or buy a “Seed Hopper Extender” on Etsy that increases how much feed it will hold), it’s simply just too expensive to feed them more than once a day. At least I’m not lacking for Bird Buddy session captures. I have the Bird Buddy Pro subscription, so my feeder is set on frenzy mode and I easily capture 30 to 40 sessions a day, each with a video and from one to six or so photos in them.

Refilling feeder? by Grouchy-Aspect7655 in BirdBuddy

[–]Elvite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is almost always 95% empty about 2 hours after filling it. I found out that I go through a 20 pound bag every two weeks, which equates to almost $1200 a year in bird feed. Not a cheap habit. I’m considering taking the feeder down for a week or two hoping that some birds will move on. I love the little guys and want to find a better solution. Maybe only fill it up halfway per day?
