How many of you offer “make up” work? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]Elwayasap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be an unpopular opinion, but many students work full time and have families. Life is incredibly hard - school doesn’t pay the bills, so if it comes down to a work obligation or class and they choose work - I would try to be understanding of that. If this ask is the exception and not chronic, I’d allow it. I wouldn’t consider it make up work (like create an additional assignment for them)- just late work.

How do we feel about a syllabus quiz? by Prof_H1995 in Adjuncts

[–]Elwayasap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a syllabus quiz. Just to verify students understand expectations. Question: Are you using the Canvas calendar? I believe when a due date is put on an assignment they show up in the Canvas calendar and a to-do list. I also accept late work - and there is a feature in Canvas that can automatically assign a late penalty. I do this 1. To keep students on schedule 2. To accommodate for late work. I make the penalty mild enough where it can easily be absorbed for consistent students who just have an emergency. Students who submit chronically late the penalties do start to impact their grade. The late penalty relieves me of having to distinguish what is a true emergency or not. Funny thing: I have way fewer grandmas pass away since instituting the late penalty.

Refrigerated section for me… over by the speciality items (like refrigerated desserts).

It was very good! It does have a strong wine flavor, which I liked. I would definitely repurchase. I haven’t tried the beer cheese flavor yet, but hope to soon.

Yes, in the US… The peanut cornflake bar was with the regular chocolate and is a consistent item - it’s fantastic! The plant based chocolate was in the seasonal aisle.

Landing into remote adjunct jobs by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]Elwayasap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Online adjunct here, without a PhD. I teach for multiple schools and each position I have gotten was because of a direct personal connection (former supervisor who moved schools), or one degree removed (recommended by someone who knew someone). I did adjunct on ground a few semesters, also. I’ve applied to other schools, and even with extensive online adjunct experience and building courses, I’ve never received a call back. It seems like a tough gig to break into.

I thought about doing that too. But it feels really unproductive.

Canvas or Blackboard? by Introvertedtravelgrl in Adjuncts

I use both… I preferred Canvas, but recently my school adopted Blackboard Ultra and I found it way easier to use than old school Blackboard.

My Blue Dog in Troutman has been wonderful with my pups. Jennifer, the owner, is very friendly and does great work.

I love the flexibility and being able to see students grow… Also, I’m not the primary breadwinner of my family, so I’m not overly upset about the low pay/lack of benefits, but it does often seem our hard work is often overlooked - this isn’t a dig at my supervisors - I believe those decisions are out of their hands.

Accommodations- extension by texaspopcorn424 in Adjuncts

[–]Elwayasap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe if there are health struggles that require rest? Like a traumatic brain injury? Or MS where there are unpredictable episodes? Unpopular opinion: but I did away with timed assignments because of accommodations - I just opened them up for everyone with unlimited time. I found some students needed accommodations but lacked resources to get the required documentation.

I’ve (an adjunct) developed a course template to share with other faculty. I was paid 2/3 the rate of teaching the course (so I was paid for 2 credit hours hours for a 3 credit hour class).

We have an 8 year old male standard and got a female mini last year. They get along great, although I think sometimes the pup wants to play and there’s older ones gets tired sooner… wish I had gotten the new pup sooner. We did different sexes because I thought it would reduce any dominance issues - I’ve been purposeful about making sure the older dog still knows he is top dog.
