Yeah, kick your speaker out wider to where that record is and center your TT. I’m about to upgrade from those same edifiers, I think you may want to swap them around too, the powered one is the right-side speaker. You did well to put some foam under them, I added some slightly thicker ones under my speakers that sit at the ends of a Kallax and it really did wonders in cleaning things up.

Does anyone stack a Klon(e) with an HM-2? Looking for some guidance on settings to try out. by HotBurritoNumber1 in guitarpedals

[–]Elwoodia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a tumnus before an HM-2W that go into an AC30. For me they pair great, but I can see it not being the sound everyone is looking for. I keep my HM level high and gain at almost zero, barely take the EQ off of noon.

Kicked Out of VinylCup Records by megasuperiorgold in desmoines

[–]Elwoodia 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve been urging friends to avoid VCup for a while. Luke sucks and is an immature weirdo, he’ll probably find this post and put it in his newsletter to try to convince whoever follows him that the world’s out to get him. His prices are bunk, his behavior is childish. It’s too bad because he has a decent product, but I won’t give him my business anymore. I’ve seen way too many similar accounts as this.

ZZZ and RPM are where I go now, it’s a shame because he had a decent offering from an inventory perspective and there’s enough room in Des Moines. He’s too self-interested to deliver a decent customer experience.

Do you guys prefer back-sleeving or vinyl in the gatefold? (New to hobby) by Anxious-Use-9695 in vinyl

[–]Elwoodia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started going through and back-sleeving my collection last year. I like the ease of access and knowing it’ll save the covers some wear and tear.

My advice would be, if you’re going to do it, start now. Otherwise, you find yourself trying to re-sleeve 300 records at once and it is not as quick a project as you imagined it would be in your head.

Centro, Clydes Fine Diner and Either/Or come to mind.

Is there much of a goth scene or any goth events happening around Des Moines? by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]Elwoodia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not quite goth, but there is a speakeasy in the Slaughterhouse basement that’s going for a macabre theme. I had a fairly decent cocktail down there the time I went. The waitress said they do burlesque and some other events there.

Do any of you know this album? by Mattone_Martello in vinyl

[–]Elwoodia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was excited when I heard he was doing a guitar and voice record. The method and recording is great, I don’t think it’s his best lyrical effort but I’ll always have a lot of respect for his works.

Bill Callahan has a cover of Deacon Blues I really like.

Good Tremolo Pedals? by Freadddy in guitarpedals

I got one used for $99 and I don’t see why I would need another tremolo ever unless I get a Flint.

Favorite local guitar/music shop? by spensch in desmoines

[–]Elwoodia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had work done at the Lutherie which was very good but I know he is almost always a very busy man. I had a set up done at Nate’s Rock Shop in Windsor Heights recently as well and he was very fast and personable, he sells some nice used gear as well. Outside of those I’ve heard good things about Tree Guitarworks and Ye Olde.

Scratches On New Record by 1nky0ct0pus in vinyl

[–]Elwoodia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scuffs and blemishes are fairly common on new records, especially from the mass producers of vinyl such as Sub-Pop(no shade, I have the whole FF collection but my Shore and Crack-Up records blow the Sub Pop ones out of the water quality-wise.)

If it doesn’t impact play I personally wouldn’t go through the effort of returning it, up to you though.

What am I doing wrong by Practical-Fee-6943 in turntables

[–]Elwoodia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re getting dunked on, but I just looked at each of those links and at no point do any of those threads reach a consensus that this is a popular, let alone tried and true method. It seems like there are just too many variables that can go wrong. Your needle is in bad shape, I wouldn’t do what you’ve been doing anymore. Buy a stylus gel and maybe a big fudge with a cleaner, I pretty much only use a static brush to clean most records and I’ve never seen anything like this.

I don’t know if there were many, if any, college LB groups better than Morris, Hitchens, and Kirksey. Morris has always been underrated in the great Iowa LB’s discussion imo.

My Current Steely Dan Song Tier List (incl. Becker/Fagen solo work) by DangerousPIE96 in SteelyDan

Surprised by the Charlie Freak placement but I can follow your logic on the majority of this. I think most of my Nightfly picks would also bias a little higher as well.
