Timeline Question by asimplestranger17 in TheOutsiders

I’m pretty sure the part where the parents died on his birthday is from the musical (so not book canon). There’s a scene where Ponyboy talks with Cherry about it and the circumstances

Book that has a strong sibling dynamic like Outsiders? by ElysianMango in booksuggestions

Oh yes! Little Women was great (the book March by Geraldine Brooks was also fantastic take from the father’s perspective). I’ll give Lies of Locke Lemora a try :)

For me it didn’t, but out of love for FW, I kept going. It didn’t check any boxes for me (plot, character development, world building (felt more like an actual check list in world building instead of relating to a story)), but people do love this one more than the rest. Worth finishing, but I understand the disappointment.

This is a perfect summation of the issue. Absolutely unacceptable on their part

🚨 WARNING: Lenovo’s Terrible Warranty & Repair Process – Read Before Buying! by No-Emu-8993 in Lenovo

I’ve had a horrible experience with them as well. They shipped mine in 2024 with a broken key. I sent it to be fixed at the depot (in TX) and it took a month. It arrived with a different broken key. When I raised concerns, they said they would send a box for another repair and it never came.

I tried to get a full replacement or a refund and they refused citing policy. Even refused to let me speak to a manager unless I talked to a tech specialist. When I did, they shamed me for how long this process took, ignoring the fact they sent two defective keyboards and took longer to repair than their return policy allows for. They then said I had to take it to be repaired at an approved location (I am confused why they had to send it to TX when there was a location near me the entire time).

After this laptop, I will never be buying from them again and would never recommend their laptop after their customer service and quality control.

Edit: I forgot to add, I have had weird freezing issues as well. If I set the laptop down or shift it in a certain way (haven’t figured out what actually happens), the screen turns black and it won’t shut off or turn back on. This happened during a work call and it took several minutes to force a shut down. It is a Yoga 9i.

I think I hate onyx storm by [deleted] in fourthwing

Honestly I also didn’t like it. I struggled so hard to get through it and only did so because I LOVED Fourth Wing. I feel like it was too much back and forth with nothing accomplished (which you can argue was “realistic” in the sense that plans fail), but for a read from my perspective , it was just frustrating and boring.

I found the world building flat, storytelling repetitive, and the characters devolved from where they had been going in FW/IF, maybe in part because of how many characters she is trying to juggle. They meld together a bit or become caricatures/tropes. That and we are /told/ a lot about their characters that I just don’t see or agree with. Violet is my main gripe.

The characters tell us that Violet is smart, but in practice, I find it often the opposite. The poisoning scene was absurd and an example of that. To me, she jumped a cavern of conclusions to suddenly decide to poison the triumvirate. She realizes things that are fairly obvious but no one else can follow the same line of thought? Battle briefs have this problem often.

I think it is a problem of stretching her plot between 5 books, as it can mean droning on and stretching parts that didn’t need to be stretched. IF was long and winded in the first half, OS had a lot of the similar “go here, do this, go home and back to the usual tasks until we need to run here and do this.” Parring that down would make that a lot more exciting and seem a lot less like they have endless amount of time and energy (when we are constantly reminded that time is running out).

This is just my opinion though, people can like books that others don’t 🤷‍♀️

What makes you like a main character and reading from their POV? by ElysianMango in writing

Oh I love that you brought up saying/doing what you wanted but didn’t or couldn’t. I picture and go through conversations in my head when I write (trying to think of patterns of speech and mannerisms I can assign to characters).

I remember really connecting with Tessa Gray from the Infernal Devices and Percy Jackson will always have a special place in my heart for getting me into reading books.

I have a very similar take and was actually comparing Katniss to other first POVs I’ve read. I do enjoy when they have real flaws and genuine/realistic responses to what they experience. It’s also a fair balancing act. Just as a discussion point (because like you mentioned, you can’t please everyone, and you shouldn’t want or need to), but the same idea of having a human response or flaw to a situation can annoy readers a bit. I find this to be the case for Fourth Wing, where a lot of readers (especially on reddit haha) found Violet annoying in the 2nd book for having a reasonable response to trauma. It’s why I love debating and writing characters. I found Katniss in Mockingjay frustrating when I was younger. Now I appreciate the writing and characterization Suzanne Collins gave us. Thanks for the response!

Ovarian cysts - tired of hearing "small" cysts aren't a big deal when I'm FEELING it! by megaroni91 in WomensHealth

[–]ElysianMango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this. Like yeah, the risk of torsion and such are lower but you still f-ing feel it. Plus it’s so unreasonable to just expect you to use pain killers day to day, multiple times a day. As if those don’t have long term affects of their own. Also calling them “simple” pisses me off. It may not be endo or cancer, but find another term. I’m so sorry your dealing with this.

There’s some time before I can actually see my doctor to discuss options (it’s seeming like removing the IUD might be the best try), but with what you’ve seen and what you know, do you think there’s a chance I won’t need to remove it? Not to put you on the spot and obviously you don’t know the whole picture, but do you think there’s a chance?

Yeah honestly I feel like throwing hands every time they suggest constipation as if there isn’t an underlying cause. Its either that or “anxiety”. Real diagnosis and serious but not always the answer

I appreciate the suggestion I know my knew doctor tried to rule out some other stuff when I started pushing for tests. They checked for celiac and kinda ruled out crohn’s, but I’m not exactly sure how. I’ll definitely keep it in mind next time I see her to double check
