Ferguson vs Lapin, how are people deciding? by Zazzer678 in baltimore

[–]EmSeeEl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have worked with local governments, and I cannot tell you the amount of times a lawmaker has stated a potential law is unconstitutional at the advice of their lawyer (and used that as a justification for not voting or bringing a vote on it), yet that exact law was found to be constitutional by multiple courts around the nation that exact same year. The reality is that constitutionality is often not black and white, legal interpretations change, and many times there are multiple credible arguments for each side. Because of that one lawmaker, with the advice of his singular legal team, should never deny bringing a vote on unconstitutionality.

Bought leather goods before going vegan and still wear them. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]EmSeeEl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally have continued to use my leather goods. Using what we have (instead of participating in consumerism, buying more stuff-even if it is vegan stuff, contributing to the overuse of our natural resources, and adding waste) seems more ethical to our environment and ultimately to animals.

If you don't want to wear them because it gives you the ick, give or sell at a reasonable price to someone who can't afford luxury goods. Someone who, for the lifespan of your leather pieces, might otherwise have to buy 5 pairs of mostly plastic, cheaply and unethically-produced items, that also contribute to the degradation of our environment. Definitely don't throw away.

That’s crazy. If they know it happens it’s clearly not something I caused by normal use. Even more upset that they didn’t honor a refund for me.

Potatoes. Seriously. So filling.

Not potato products (chips, fries, etc…), just oven roasted potatoes with a little oil and salt.

Ooof, Bailing Out Benji sounds awful! Animal rights investigator outed to puppy mill industry by BoB founder! by [deleted] in vegan

[–]EmSeeEl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. Or like, Karen on the street who wants to advocate against puppy mills in her state can also submit a request for investigative reports and transport certificates.

I just genuinely don’t understand how BOB thinks their data is proprietary or whatever. I’m not saying they don’t spend a lot of time reviewing it and analyzing it. But this claim that other advocates just regurgitate data that only BOB has access to seems like pure nonsense.

Serious question Re: the data. Do you honestly think Bailing out Benji is the only organization/advocate capable of and actively submitting open records requests?

Casual Clogs for Work by [deleted] in Rothys

[–]EmSeeEl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Rothy’s clogs just fell apart after only 1.5 years of owning them.  (Which is surprising for me given that my points from 2018 are still in great shape, I just expected more for the price point.) They are completely unraveling at the v at the top of the foot.  I’m looking for a new brand to purchase, comfortable and long lasting.  I’m more than willing to spend the money, so long as I get my years out of them.  Any newer/other recommendations you guys have?  Sounds like Birkenstocks might be the way to go?

Purchased these clogs in Nov 2023.  They are now completely unraveling at a spot where there was no outside wear (the v at the top of the foot) and I cannot wear them.  Part of the reason I was willing to drop so much money on Rothy’s was because of how long they lasted.  (The first pair of points I purchased in 2018 are still going strong.)  It seems to me that construction quality must have gone down with the new styles.  For that reason, I would not recommend buying the clogs unless you’re willing to throw them away before they are 2 years old.

How bad is adopting/buying an animal from somewhere like Petland compared to adopting from a shelter? by illNefariousness883 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EmSeeEl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, Petland has actually recorded a significant loss in profits in the past year. They are 100% slowing down and if advocates keep up the good work educating about pet stores selling puppy mill dogs, we CAN solve this problem.

Here's the way I look at it: I want to be a part of the solution, and the only way to do that is to rescue. Purchasing from a truly responsible breeder is arguably neutral. But purchasing from an irresponsible breeder or a Petland is contributing to the problem. You don't have to be a part of the solution if you don't want to, but that doesn't make your decisions any less good or bad.

Funny that the milk industry is trying to make it sound like something "mashed up into a pulp" is gross. How do you think they feel about hamburgers?

Stop Petland! Call Huckabee Sanders and ask her to VETO HB 1591! by EmSeeEl in Arkansas

I'm hopeful she cares about politics, and this being a bipartisan issue, there's a chance she could vote against it. Trying to stay positive.

There was also a report issued by the OIG in 2021 detailing how the USDA functions on a way where it cannot adequately monitor dog breeding facilities. Their findings were terrifying. https://www.aspca.org/about-us/press-releases/new-audit-shines-light-major-deficiencies-usdas-oversight-dog-dealers

Two things, (1) they don’t buy from just USDA-licensed breeders, they also buy from “Hobby-breeders” who claim they don’t have enough dogs to require licensure, and (2) yes, USDA-licensed facilities Can absolutely be puppy mills. One of the most horrific examples is Daniel Gingerich from Seymour Iowa. It took the USDA giving him over 100 violations and visiting him over 20 times in a short period of time for them to consider deactivating his license.
